Bitcoin market indicators are measurements or estimates of particular parts of the market. They can show how market value compares with an on-chain cost-basis estimate, whether recently spent outputs moved at a gain or loss, how labeled exchange addresses are moving coins, or how traders are positioned in derivatives. They cannot reveal every holder’s intention, explain every transaction, or guarantee what price will do next.
The useful question is therefore not “Which indicator predicts Bitcoin?” but “What exactly does this series measure, how was it constructed, and what conclusion is justified by that measurement?”

Start with the market layer being measured
Bitcoin data comes from several distinct layers. Mixing them can make a chart appear more certain than it is.
| Layer | Examples | What it describes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-chain transactions | Realized price, MVRV, SOPR, classified exchange flows | Coins moving on the blockchain and values assigned to those movements | Some values are calculated from last-moved prices; exchange series depend on address labels. |
| Traded-market data | Spot price and volume, order books, funding, open interest, liquidations, options volatility and skew | Prices, contracts and positioning on particular venues | Coverage, contract type, units and aggregation window change the meaning of a figure. |
| Macro and fund flows | ETF net flows and macroeconomic variables | Capital flows or conditions outside the blockchain itself | A relationship in a chart is not proof that one series caused the other. |
Glassnode’s catalogue places spot, futures, options, CME, ETF, macro and on-chain series in these different categories. Treating a derivatives reading as if it were a count of coins, for example, is a category error.

On-chain cost basis: realized price and MVRV
What realized price estimates
Realized price is an aggregate estimate based on the price at which each coin last transacted on-chain. It is often described as an on-chain cost-basis proxy: coins that last moved when Bitcoin traded at different prices are weighted into a supply-wide average. It is not a verified record of what every person or entity paid. Coins can move for operational reasons, and an address or entity can hold coins acquired through several routes.
CoinMetrics describes realized capitalization as a gross approximation of aggregate cost basis. That wording matters: it identifies the type of estimate, not an accounting statement about every holder.
How MVRV is calculated
MVRV compares current market value with realized value. In a common formulation, MVRV = market value ÷ realized value. Glassnode expresses the same idea on its chart as spot price divided by realized price. A ratio above 1 means the market-price measure is above the aggregate last-moved-price estimate; a ratio below 1 means it is below it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis makes MVRV a profitability and valuation-context lens. A high ratio can indicate that the market value is high relative to the modeled aggregate cost basis, while a low ratio can indicate the opposite. CoinMetrics discusses historically high or low readings in relation to past cycle tops or bottoms, but that historical association is not a timing rule and has not been established as a standalone forecast.

What MVRV cannot tell you
- It cannot identify the actual purchase price of each holder.
- It cannot show whether holders will sell at a particular ratio.
- It cannot guarantee a reversal when the ratio is high or a rally when it is low.
- It cannot be compared fairly across providers without checking how supply, entities, pricing and timestamps are handled.
SOPR: profit or loss when outputs are spent
The basic measurement
Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) describes whether the outputs being spent are moving at a gain or a loss relative to the price recorded when those outputs previously moved. A value above 1 conventionally indicates that the selected spent outputs, in aggregate, moved at a profit; a value below 1 indicates a loss. The result is about the outputs included in the calculation, not a survey of all Bitcoin holders.
Always name the SOPR variant
Provider filters materially change the series. Glassnode’s adjusted SOPR ignores outputs with a lifespan of less than one hour. Entity-adjusted variants also exclude transfers between addresses that the provider groups as belonging to one entity. Two charts labeled “SOPR” can therefore differ even when they cover the same date.
A 2022 CryptoQuant white paper is useful for basic definitions, but it is provider-authored and dated; its historical interpretations should not be treated as current evidence. Before using a threshold, state the provider, adjustment, entity treatment, asset, time interval and timestamp.
What SOPR can and cannot establish
SOPR can describe realized profit or loss among a defined set of spent outputs and help characterize whether spending is occurring above or below those outputs’ prior on-chain movement prices. It cannot prove that the spender is an investor taking profit, that a loss represents capitulation, or that a particular reading will precede a price move. Internal transfers, operational movements and modeled entity groupings can all affect interpretation.

Exchange reserves and net flows
What the series actually counts
Exchange-reserve and net-flow metrics sum balances and movements associated with addresses labeled as exchanges. They are classified on-chain movements, not a complete, independently verified inventory of every exchange’s assets. Exchange addresses are dynamic, and tracking is imperfect. Individual large transfers may initially be unconfirmed in the labeling system, while historical values can change when labels or clustering are updated.
Why an outflow is not automatically bullish
A withdrawal may represent self-custody, an over-the-counter settlement, a custody arrangement, collateral for another transaction, or an internal wallet change. It does not establish that coins were bought for long-term holding. An inflow likewise does not prove an imminent sale. The destination, ownership structure and purpose are not fully visible from a labeled address movement alone.
Glassnode Research summarizes this distinction: “Does this mean that exchange metrics are useless? Not at all, on the contrary!” The practical condition is to understand how the metric was computed and how its labels are maintained.
Questions to ask about an exchange chart
- Which venues and addresses are covered?
- Are balances, gross flows or net flows being shown?
- When was the address label last revised?
- Is the transfer confirmed and settled, or only an initial classification?
- Could custody, OTC, collateral or internal-wallet activity explain the movement?
Derivatives indicators describe contracts and positioning
Funding rates, open interest, options implied volatility and skew, and liquidation totals describe the derivatives market rather than the number of spot coins held by investors.

Funding rates
Funding is a periodic payment mechanism in perpetual futures. Its sign and size describe the balance of demand between long and short positions for the specified venue and interval. A positive rate does not prove that all traders are bullish, and a negative rate does not prove a coming rally. State the venue, contract, settlement interval and units before interpreting it.
Open interest and liquidations
Open interest measures outstanding derivatives contracts under a provider’s definition. It can rise because new positions are being opened, not because traders agree on direction. Liquidations record forced closures reported by covered venues; they do not include every voluntary close or every market participant.
Options volatility and skew
Implied volatility is the volatility embedded in option prices, while skew compares implied volatility across strikes or maturities. These measures describe the price of protection and directional exposure in a selected options market. They are not direct forecasts of spot returns.

ETF flows and macro series add context, not proof of causation
ETF net flows can show creations and redemptions in the covered products, and macroeconomic series can describe rates, liquidity or other broad conditions. Neither is an on-chain measure. A coincident rise in ETF inflows and Bitcoin price does not, by itself, establish that inflows caused the move; timing, sample selection, other assets and market expectations also matter.

Holder labels are models, not identities
Providers may classify supply by the age of coins or by modeled entities. Glassnode’s current documentation describes a logistic long-term/short-term holder transition centered at 155 days with a 10-day transition width. Those are methodological parameters used to smooth a classification boundary, not a market statistic or a prediction that coins become “long-term” on a particular day.
Entity clustering is also an inference. Addresses grouped together may be controlled by one organization, while addresses that are related may remain separate. Use the label as the provider’s model output and preserve that qualification whenever drawing a conclusion.
Can Bitcoin indicators predict the price?
No general Bitcoin indicator, or combination of indicators covered here, has a sourced and independently validated current hit rate that would justify presenting it as a dependable standalone predictor. Indicators can improve description and help formulate hypotheses, but a high or low reading does not guarantee that price will reverse or continue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Prediction requires a defined rule, timestamp, trading universe, fee and slippage assumptions, out-of-sample testing and a treatment of revisions. Without those details, a chart showing that an indicator preceded some historical moves is an anecdote, not a measured forecasting edge.
A disciplined way to read any indicator
- Name the question. Decide whether you are asking about on-chain spending, aggregate cost-basis context, exchange-associated movement, spot liquidity, derivatives positioning or outside capital flows.
- Write the exact definition. Record the formula, filters, entity treatment, price source, venue coverage, units and aggregation window.
- Classify the evidence. Mark each input as directly observed, labeled by a provider or modeled. A last-moved price is an estimate of cost basis; an exchange balance is a labeled classification.
- Check the timestamp and revision policy. Historical values may change when labels, clustering or data coverage are updated. Do not compare a revised series with an unrevised snapshot without noting the difference.
- Compare like with like. Align asset, venue, contract, geographic coverage, interval and timezone before comparing providers.
- State the narrow conclusion first. Say what the reading describes. Only then discuss possible explanations, and label them as possibilities rather than facts.
- Test any predictive claim separately. Define the signal in advance and evaluate it out of sample; do not infer a success rate from a visually persuasive chart.
Seven checks when two charts disagree
| Check | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Market layer | An on-chain flow, spot volume and futures open interest measure different things. |
| Formula and adjustment | Filters such as SOPR’s one-hour exclusion alter which outputs enter the calculation. |
| Asset, venue and entity coverage | Different exchanges, contracts or address clusters produce different aggregates. |
| Time interval and timestamp | Hourly, daily and close-to-close values can describe different events. |
| Observed, labeled or modeled status | A provider’s classification is not equivalent to a raw blockchain fact. |
| Revision history | Labels and clustering can revise both current and historical values. |
| Type of conclusion | Descriptive, explanatory and predictive claims require progressively stronger evidence. |
A 2026 preprint introducing Open Bitcoin Metrics highlights the same reproducibility problem: common metrics are spread across commercial platforms, may use heterogeneous definitions and are not always reproducible from primary blockchain data. It proposes documented, full-node-derived time series for economic research. Because this work is a preprint, it should be treated as a methodological proposal rather than peer-reviewed validation.
Common interpretation mistakes
- Calling realized price “everyone’s cost.” It is an aggregate last-moved-price estimate.
- Reading one provider’s MVRV as universal. Supply treatment, pricing and entity assumptions may differ.
- Using “SOPR” without the variant. Adjusted and entity-adjusted versions do not include the same outputs.
- Treating an exchange outflow as proof of accumulation. Custody, OTC, collateral and internal transfers remain possible.
- Combining spot and derivatives units. Contracts, coins and dollar notionals are not interchangeable.
- Turning correlation into causation. ETF or macro co-movement needs a tested causal argument.
- Quoting a backtested-looking hit rate without a defined test. No reliable general rate is established by these sources.
What a careful conclusion looks like
A defensible statement is specific: “The selected adjusted SOPR series shows that the included spent outputs, in this interval, moved at an aggregate gain or loss relative to their prior movement prices.” A less defensible statement is: “Bitcoin investors are taking profit and price must fall.” The first reports a measurement; the second adds an unverified motive and a guaranteed forecast.
Use indicators as a map of selected market conditions. Keep the formula, coverage and uncertainty attached to every number, and treat the next price move as an outcome to test—not a fact hidden inside a chart.
