What Bioacoustics Can—and Cannot—Tell Us About Animal Communication

Bioacoustics can document animal sounds and support carefully qualified inferences about activity, species, behavior, and trends. It cannot automatically decode meaning, identify every caller, prove absence, or convert call counts into population size.

Bioacoustics can show when and where animals produce sounds, describe the acoustic structure of those sounds, and—when methods are validated—help identify species, locations, behaviors, or population patterns. It cannot, from a recording alone, reliably translate a call into a human-like message, identify every caller, prove that a silent animal is absent, or turn call totals directly into animal counts.

The dependable path is to treat a recording as evidence of a sound event first. Researchers then add context, calibrated detection methods, behavioral observations, experiments, or other sensors before making stronger claims about communication.

What bioacoustics and passive acoustic monitoring actually measure

Bioacoustics covers how animals produce, transmit, detect, discriminate, recognize, and respond to sound. A microphone, hydrophone, autonomous recording unit (ARU), array, or animal-borne recorder samples part of that sound environment. The resulting file is not a direct readout of an animal’s thoughts; it is a measurement made by a particular sensor under particular conditions.

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) records sounds that are already present and uses them to infer ecological information. It differs from active acoustic monitoring, which emits a signal, and from biologging, in which a tag may combine audio with GPS, accelerometry, depth, or other measurements. PAM can be low-disturbance because researchers may collect sound without capturing an animal, but it only works when the animal makes a sound that reaches the sensor and is recorded clearly enough to analyze.

An acoustic detection is therefore a bounded statement: a sound event with defined features was recorded and identified using a stated method. “This call means danger,” “this individual made it,” and “there are 40 animals here” are progressively stronger claims. Each requires additional assumptions and validation.

What can animal sounds tell us?

Occurrence, timing, and activity

A recording can support the conclusion that a target sound occurred at a particular place and time, subject to the system’s detection limits. Repeated deployments can reveal calling across hours, seasons, or locations. Those patterns may indicate when animals are acoustically active, but they do not automatically reveal how many animals are present or what every caller is doing.

Measurable acoustic structure

Researchers can quantify frequency or pitch, duration, harmonics, modulation, amplitude, call rate, and temporal spacing. Spectrograms and related analyses make these features comparable across recordings. They describe the signal itself. A measured frequency peak is not, by itself, evidence that the animal is courting, warning, feeding, or experiencing a particular emotion.

Species and call classification

Reference libraries, expert annotation, and machine-learning models can classify sounds when species’ calls are sufficiently distinguishable and the method has been tested on the relevant data. Similar calls, mixed-species choruses, overlapping vocalizations, background noise, and differences among microphones can all cause confusion. A classifier’s label should be reported as a validated classification or a candidate detection, not as unquestionable ground truth.

Behavioral and environmental patterns

Acoustic activity can be associated with foraging, breeding, migration, daily rhythms, or responses to human-generated noise. A 2024 review in Trends in Ecology & Evolution describes behavioral bioacoustics as a route beyond simple presence records, while emphasizing that identifying a sound’s function and context remains difficult and that fully integrated studies are still uncommon. The strongest interpretation connects the sound pattern with direct observation, playback or response experiments where appropriate, movement data, or repeated observations under comparable conditions.

Distribution and long-term trends

Consistent recordings over long periods can contribute to estimates of distribution and population trends. Comparisons become unreliable if sensors, placement, schedules, background noise, detectability, or animal calling behavior change over time. A trend in recorded calls may represent a biological change, a change in the probability of detection, or both; study design must separate those possibilities.

Possible welfare indicators in managed settings

A 2024 scoping review in Applied Animal Behaviour Science describes attempts to use animal sounds as indicators of physical condition, health, behavior, and affective state. Routine farm-management use remains limited, and links between acoustic measures and welfare need further development. An acoustic signature should not be presented as a standalone diagnosis or proof of subjective emotion.

What sound alone usually cannot establish

The meaning or intention of a call

Researchers may propose alarm, courtship, contact, territorial, or other functions when a sound consistently occurs in a particular context and produces a repeatable response. Classification alone does not decode a semantic message. Stronger evidence comes from controlled or ethically appropriate playback, the receiver’s response, observations of social and environmental context, replication, and competing explanations being tested.

Which individual called

In free-living animals, a recording rarely identifies the individual vocalizer. Some species have distinctive acoustic signatures or repertoires, but identity claims are stronger when the animals are known, an array permits localization, or tags link a sound to a specific individual. A species label is not an individual label.

Absence from a silent recording

Not hearing a call does not prove that an animal is absent. The animal may have been silent, outside the effective range, masked by rain or other noise, oriented away from the sensor, or producing a signal the device could not capture. A non-detection becomes informative only when the study estimates detection probability under the actual habitat, signal, equipment, and schedule.

Abundance from raw call totals

Call rates vary with behavior and context. The WWF-UK 2018 acoustic-monitoring handbook recounts a vaquita study in which click rates differed between feeding and travelling; treating every click as an animal would therefore confound vocal activity with density. Abundance or density estimates need explicit assumptions, calibrated detection range, suitable sampling designs, and statistical methods that account for repeated calls and imperfect detection.

A complete behavioral story

A microphone samples sound, not the animal’s full visual, social, physiological, or movement context. Multi-sensor biologgers can add location and movement information, but tags bring logistical and ethical constraints, including weight limits for smaller animals. Even a rich acoustic record is one channel of evidence.

Universal automated accuracy

A model trained on one species, device, habitat, season, or noise profile can perform poorly after modest changes. No universal accuracy percentage or general-purpose decoder has been established. Validation must resemble the intended deployment and report both false positives and missed detections.

How researchers move from a sound to a defensible conclusion

  1. Define the question. Decide whether the goal is presence, activity timing, species classification, localization, individual identity, behavior, or abundance. These goals require different data and assumptions.
  2. Define the target signal. Specify frequency range, expected duration, call types, and possible confounders before deployment.
  3. Choose and place sensors. Select handheld microphones, ARUs, microphone arrays, hydrophones, or animal-borne devices according to the habitat and target frequency. Document height or depth, orientation, spacing, weather protection, and calibration.
  4. Set a sampling schedule. Opportunistic clips can establish that an event occurred. Repeated, standardized deployments are needed for comparisons across time or sites. Record duty cycles, gain, sample rate, time synchronization, and deployment dates.
  5. Detect candidate events. Human listeners, spectrogram review, and automatic detectors identify sections that may contain target sounds. Detection is a screening step, not a biological interpretation.
  6. Classify and validate. Experts or validated models assign species or call categories. Check a representative sample, including difficult conditions, and quantify false alarms and missed events.
  7. Add context and estimate uncertainty. Link sounds to direct observations, environmental measurements, playback responses, tags, or array-based locations where the claim requires it. State what remains unknown.
  8. Analyze and report assumptions. Distinguish recorded observations from inferences, describe effective detection conditions, and avoid extending results beyond the species, habitat, season, and equipment tested.

As a Society for Conservation Biology guidance article puts it, “Effective monitoring is not simply an act of recording sounds.” A credible program also plans processing, storage, statistical power, partnerships, privacy, and possible disturbance before data collection begins.

Devices, range, and practical trade-offs

Approach What it can contribute Main constraints
Handheld microphone Flexible, targeted observations and immediate contextual notes Observer presence, limited sampling time, and possible disturbance or bias
Autonomous recording unit Long, repeatable deployments without an observer at every event Battery and memory-card maintenance, large data volumes, weather exposure, and uncertain detection probability
Microphone array Multiple synchronized sensors can support localization and stronger identity or counting inferences Higher setup, synchronization, calibration, and processing demands
Hydrophone Underwater sounds such as marine mammal clicks and calls Water conditions, deployment logistics, specialized calibration, and aquatic noise
Animal-borne recorder or biologger Sound linked to a tagged animal’s movement or location Capture or handling, tag weight, battery limits, data retrieval, and animal-welfare considerations

Detection range is not a universal number. It depends on signal level and frequency, habitat absorption, vegetation or topography, background noise, sensor sensitivity and frequency response, placement, and recorder specifications. Some long-distance calls can travel kilometres in favorable conditions, but that cannot be generalized to every species or site.

You can delete all recordings with one click or transfer the recording files to your computer with the included Type-C cable. (Windows and Mac compatible)

Autonomous systems reduce the need for continuous human presence but create an analysis burden: background sounds must be separated from targets, similar species can be confused, and overlapping calls complicate behavioral interpretation. Storage, transfer, annotation, and quality control can become the limiting costs rather than the recorder itself.

Can artificial intelligence identify animal calls?

Yes, within a defined scope. Automatic detectors can scan large archives and flag candidate events far faster than a person listening to every minute. Classification models can then assign likely species or call types. Localization, individual identification, and interpretation are separate tasks and may need arrays, known individuals, or other sensors.

Performance depends on the match between training examples and deployment data. A model may degrade with a new microphone, sample rate, habitat, season, species assemblage, or noise environment. Build a validation set from the intended field conditions, keep a human-review path for uncertain cases, and report false positives and missed detections rather than a single headline score. Automated screening is most useful as a scalable assistant, not a universal oracle.

Examples that show why context matters

The vaquita monitoring case

The WWF-UK 2018 handbook describes 44 C-PODs deployed from 2011 to 2015 in the Gulf of California. It reports a mean annual decline of 34% per year over that period, based on the cited historical study. The figure is a historical estimate reported by the handbook, not a current population trend. The same case illustrates why click rates must be interpreted alongside behavior: feeding and travelling produced different vocal rates, so raw detections could not simply be treated as animal counts.

A landscape-scale terrestrial example

A Society for Conservation Biology article described an Australian Acoustic Observatory example covering 90 sites, with four solar-powered sensors per site. That is the scale reported for that example, not a typical requirement or a verified count for every year. Such networks can reveal broad temporal and spatial patterns, but comparisons still depend on consistent hardware, deployment, calibration, and validation.

Managed-animal welfare applications

Farm-animal studies explore whether changes in vocal features can flag health, behavior, or welfare concerns. Because implementation remains limited and the biological links are still being developed, these systems should support—not replace—veterinary assessment and direct welfare indicators.

How to judge an acoustic claim

Question What to check
What was actually recorded? Sound features, timestamp, sensor type, location, and recording conditions
Could the target have been missed? Effective range, masking noise, habitat, duty cycle, signal strength, and sensitivity
Who verified the label? Expert annotation, reference library, model validation, and rates of false positives and misses
Does the claim exceed detection? Evidence for species, individual, behavior, function, abundance, or trend beyond the audio event
Can results transfer? Whether the same species, site, season, equipment, and noise conditions were tested
Is the scale adequate? One clip for an event claim versus standardized repeated deployments for trends

Responsible recording and data governance

Outdoor sensors can capture people, vehicles, conversations, or activity on private land. Programs should consult landholders and relevant partners, limit collection where appropriate, control access, document retention, and explain how recordings will be used. Placement and playback can also disturb animals, alter behavior, or expose sensitive locations. Privacy and disturbance safeguards belong in the study design, not as an afterthought.

For a personal project, a wildlife or passive acoustic recorder is only one component. Check frequency response, environmental protection, power, storage, deployment duration, noise conditions, and the analysis workflow. A purchased recorder does not by itself provide calibration, detection probabilities, species labels, or a defensible population estimate.

The practical bottom line

Bioacoustics is strongest at documenting sound: when it occurred, what measurable structure it had, and how acoustic activity changes across places or times. It becomes evidence about communication, behavior, distribution, or population only when researchers connect those recordings to context, validated detection, suitable sampling, and—where necessary—experiments or complementary sensors. Treat every automated label and every silent interval as a statement with limits, and the method can reveal far more without claiming more than the data support.
