For every feature-flag change, record who acted, the tenant scope verified by the server, which flag and environment were affected, when the event occurred, what action was attempted, whether it succeeded, and the prior and resulting configuration—or a suitably redacted diff. Add enough application and request context to investigate later. Then protect both the records and the paths used to read them: tenant-scoped users should not be able to inspect another tenant’s trail, while cross-tenant platform access should require separate authorization and be audited.
What belongs in each feature-flag audit event?
A useful event should answer four investigative questions: who did what, to which flag and tenant, when it happened, and what changed or resulted. OWASP’s Logging Cheat Sheet says application logs should record “when, where, who and what” for each event. The exact fields depend on the application and the investigation the record is meant to support; this is a practical synthesis, not a mandated universal schema.

| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
event_id and event_type |
A stable unique event identifier and a specific type, such as a flag configuration update. | Supports searching, correlating, and distinguishing change events from other audit activity. |
occurred_at and, if useful, recorded_at |
The event time in an unambiguous format, such as UTC in ISO 8601; optionally record when the logging system received it. | Separates when an action happened from when it was recorded, which can matter if delivery is delayed. |
tenant_id or system scope |
The tenant scope established from verified identity and authorization context. Use an explicit system or platform scope only for genuinely global events. | Lets investigators place the event correctly without treating a client-supplied tenant identifier as proof of access. |
actor |
A stable user or service identity and actor type. | Distinguishes human actions from automation and supports attribution. |
action and outcome |
What was attempted and whether it succeeded or failed; include severity when useful. | Shows both completed changes and unsuccessful attempts that may need investigation. |
target |
The flag key plus the project, application, and environment identifiers needed to distinguish it. | A flag name alone may not identify the affected configuration unambiguously. |
before and after, or a redacted change set |
The prior and resulting flag state, or a diff that preserves the meaningful configuration change without exposing sensitive values. | Allows an authorized reader to understand the transition, not merely that an update occurred. |
interaction_id |
A request, change-ticket, or correlation identifier when available. | Connects the audit event to related application logs or an operational change record. |
source_context and authorization_context |
Useful application or service context, appropriate origin details, and the reason or decision behind a privileged change where needed. | Provides investigative context while allowing teams to limit unnecessary or sensitive data collection. |
Flaggr’s audit-logging documentation gives before and after resource state as an example of change data; that is a vendor-specific example, not a universal schema. OWASP advises choosing event properties for the system’s architecture and purpose, and notes that an extract or summary may be more appropriate than full content. Do not copy secrets or sensitive tenant data into audit records.

How should tenant scope be established and enforced?
Bind events to verified identity
Establish tenant context from a verified identity, membership, or service authorization before processing the operation. A tenant ID supplied by a client can identify the tenant the client wants to address; it does not prove the client is allowed to act for that tenant. Record the server-verified scope on tenant-scoped events.

Apply the same boundaries to audit reads
Enforce tenant ownership and authorization on both writes and reads. A centralized audit store can work, but its query and export paths must enforce tenant scope; central storage alone does not make cross-tenant access safe. A tenant-local administrator should see only authorized tenant records.
Separate and record platform-wide access
Cross-tenant inspection and platform administration are different privileges from tenant-local administration. Require explicit platform permission, then record the initiating identity, target tenant or tenants, action, time, and result. Monitor denied or unexpected cross-tenant attempts and alert on tenant-isolation control failures, without misclassifying explicitly authorized platform operations as violations.

How can teams make the trail trustworthy and useful over time?
Protect integrity beyond the append call
An append-only application API describes intended application behavior; it does not stop a sufficiently privileged actor from changing or deleting stored records. Where the threat model requires stronger integrity, enforce it with suitable database permissions, tamper-evident storage, or write-once, read-many (WORM) controls. Consider monitoring the audit pipeline so failed or missing writes are visible rather than silently lost.

Define a documented retention and deletion policy for each audit-data class, and restrict access to records kept for legal or contractual reasons. There is no universal retention duration established for feature-flag audit events; choose a period based on applicable obligations and product policy rather than treating one duration as a standard.

Limit sensitive content
Choose event details and source information with both privacy and investigative needs in mind. Avoid placing sensitive tenant data or secrets in plain-text logs. A meaningful redacted diff or summary can preserve what an investigator needs without retaining an entire configuration payload.

- Change reconstruction: Can an authorized reader see the prior and resulting state, or a meaningful redacted diff?
- Attribution: Are human and service actors, outcomes, and privileged context distinguishable?
- Integrity and access: Are access appropriately scoped and alterations detectable to the degree required by the threat model?
- Retention and export: Can the organization enforce its retention, deletion, and audit-access policies?
- Operational usefulness: Do timestamps, event identifiers, and correlation context support investigation?
OWASP provides general logging and multi-tenant security guidance, while feature-flag-specific examples illustrate possible event types and state fields. Those sources do not establish a single required vendor, schema, or product ranking.
