Armbian support is specific to the exact board model. Its support category describes the project’s maintenance and oversight for that board; it does not guarantee that every interface, peripheral, or hardware feature works. Before buying or relying on a new single-board computer (SBC), check its listing, available images and kernels, and evidence for the particular features you need.
How to check whether Armbian supports a specific SBC
- Look up the exact model. Search Armbian’s supported-hardware directory by board model, vendor, or SoC. Support for one product does not establish support for another board from the same manufacturer or one using a related chip.
- Read the board’s support category. The category indicates the level of maintenance and project oversight associated with that board. Check the current listing alongside the board-support rules; status can change.
- Check which images and kernel branches are offered. Availability differs by board. Use that model’s download page to confirm the current choices rather than assuming every board has every branch.
- Verify the functions you depend on. Look for board-specific evidence for requirements such as Wi-Fi, display output, storage, GPIO, I²C, or video acceleration. A support category alone does not confirm that each one works.
What Armbian’s support categories mean
Armbian describes its categories as different maintenance arrangements, not a universal hardware compatibility rating.

| Category | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Platinum | Manufacturer-backed support through a business relationship with Armbian. The directory describes guaranteed maintenance and priority testing for these boards. Check the specific listing. |
| Standard | Stable images and an active maintainer are part of the support model. Support remains best-effort in defined areas; it is not a promise that every feature works. |
| Community maintained | Images may be available, but the board is untested under the stated rules. The Armbian team does not actively monitor problems or apply fixes for these boards; community help may still be available. |
| WIP/staging | Board bring-up is in progress and the board is not ready for stable images. |
| End of service | The board is no longer maintained, and its removal from the code base is possible. |

Support tier and kernel choice are different decisions
The tier describes the board’s maintenance arrangement. The kernel branch describes a software track available for that board. Armbian’s kernel documentation distinguishes these options:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
- Vendor: Often offers the best hardware support for the board, although packages may be older.
- Current: The generally recommended, mainline-based option.
- Edge: Development-oriented and more likely to break; it favors freshness and participation in testing over predictability.
- Legacy: An older, stable option that may be useful when current is unavailable or a feature regresses.
Not every branch is offered for every board. Availability and the right choice depend on the board and your needs, so confirm the options on its download page.
Does “supported” mean every feature works?
No. Armbian cautions that even for a mature, maintained board, functions such as 3D, video encoding, and I²C may not all be available. Treat each needed feature as a separate compatibility question. A board can have a supported image and an active maintainer while still lacking a peripheral or function you require.
For a purchase or deployment decision, compare candidate boards on these points:
- Exact model and current support category, including whether there is a named maintainer.
- Available images and kernel branches.
- Board-specific evidence for the interfaces and features your project needs.
- Whether the board uses an established SoC family or depends on new bring-up work.
Armbian’s documentation does not provide a universal compatibility or performance ranking across board models.

What changes when Armbian adds a new board?
Armbian represents hardware with a board configuration and a board-family configuration. The board configuration points to a family, U-Boot configuration, and device tree. The family configuration contains shared choices for a SoC family, such as kernel source and U-Boot branch.
A board using an already-supported SoC family may need a board configuration. A genuinely new SoC family requires more work, potentially including a family definition and changes to the kernel, bootloader, device tree, and patches. Armbian’s new-board guidance covers this process.

- Dual-Core Processing with Renesas RA4M1 and ESP32-S3: The Arduino UNO R4 WiFi combines the Renesas RA4M1 microcontroller (ARM Cortex-M4) and the ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, delivering powerful dual-core processing capabilities. This combination offers flexibility for a wide range of projects, from high-speed communications and wireless control to real-time data processing and edge AI applications.
- Comprehensive Wireless Connectivity: Equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, the UNO R4 WiFi ensures robust wireless communication for IoT projects, remote sensors, smart devices, and wireless control applications. Whether connecting to the cloud, other devices, or local networks, the board offers stable and high-speed wireless connectivity for seamless operation.
- Modern USB-C, CAN, & Qwiic Connector: The USB-C port enables efficient power delivery and fast programming, improving ease of use compared to traditional USB connections. The Controller Area Network (CAN) support allows for reliable, real-time communication in industrial, automotive, or robotic systems. Additionally, the Qwiic Connector makes it easy to add I2C sensors and peripherals, simplifying the connection process and reducing the need for complex wiring.
- High-Precision 12-bit DAC & OP-AMP: For projects that require high-quality analog output, the 12-bit DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and integrated operational amplifier (OP-AMP) provide precise analog signal generation and amplification. This feature is ideal for audio projects, sensor interfacing, or applications where analog signal control and processing are necessary.

How current is Armbian’s board information?
On 4 October 2026, Armbian’s supported-hardware directory listed 394 boards from 83 manufacturers. Those are dated directory counts, not a measure of how many boards support a particular feature. Armbian 26.8.3, released 23 August 2026, reported platform modernization, board additions, kernel and U-Boot updates, and wireless-driver work in its release notes. Because board status and software options can change, check the individual board page for the current details.
