A YouTube handle is your channel’s unique identifier beginning with @, such as @yourname. It is separate from your channel’s display name and also creates a handle URL, such as youtube.com/@yourname. Choose one that reflects your public identity, is available under YouTube’s rules, and is easy for your intended audience to recognize, type, and share.
What a YouTube handle does
Every YouTube channel has a handle. It identifies the channel in places such as comments, mentions, Live Chat, and Shorts, and helps people find or connect with it. Unlike a display name, a handle must be unique.

YouTube creates a handle URL when you choose or change your handle. The address follows the pattern youtube.com/@yourhandle, giving you a direct link to share. A handle is not the same thing as a channel name, and changing one does not mean you need to rename the other.

Start with the identity viewers know
YouTube’s guidance is to select a handle that best represents your public identity on the platform. Begin with the name people already associate with your channel, creator identity, project, or organization. A close match helps viewers connect the handle to the channel they intended to find.

Make it practical to recognize and share
Prefer a handle your intended audience can recognize and enter accurately. Consider whether it will still make sense if your channel’s subject or branding changes. YouTube also cautions that some people may not have the keyboard needed to type less common characters, and some external apps may display or support such links poorly.
Compare your available options
- Identity fit: Does it represent the channel or creator viewers know?
- Recognizability and typing: Can your intended audience recall it and enter it correctly?
- Sharing compatibility: Is it likely to work smoothly when shared outside YouTube?
- Availability and compliance: Is it available and within YouTube’s current rules?
- Future flexibility: Will it remain suitable if the channel’s focus or identity evolves?
YouTube’s handle rules
YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed in 2026, sets these rules and qualifications for handles. The character range has script-specific exceptions, and mixed-script cases may vary. See YouTube’s handle guidance for supported languages and detailed script restrictions.
- Handles are generally 3–30 characters long. Exceptions include Han or Hangul handles of 1–10 characters and Ethiopic, Hiragana, or Katakana handles of 2–20 characters.
- A handle must use letters or numbers from a language YouTube supports. YouTube restricts some mixed-script combinations, including combinations of left-to-right and right-to-left scripts.
- Underscores, hyphens, periods, and Latin middle dots are permitted, but a separator cannot appear at the beginning or end.
- Handles are not case-sensitive.
- A handle cannot be URL-like or phone-number-like, cannot already be in use, and must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
- Selling or transferring handles is not allowed. YouTube reserves the right to change, reclaim, or remove a handle; if it violates Community Guidelines, YouTube says it may revoke it and generate a new one.
Check availability and choose a fallback
Try your preferred handle in YouTube’s handle field. An unavailable result can mean another channel has it or that the proposed handle does not meet the rules. If the preferred choice is unavailable, YouTube suggests trying a period, number, or underscore. Keep any variation readable and recognizably connected to your channel rather than adding characters that make it difficult to share.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Customization, then open Profile.
- Edit the Handle field and enter your preferred option.
- Review the availability and any rule feedback, then select Publish to apply the change.
YouTube currently allows a creator to change a handle twice within a 14-day period. After a change, YouTube holds the former handle for 14 days so you can switch back; during that period both the former and updated URLs work. Once that period ends, another user may be able to select the old handle. Check YouTube’s computer instructions for changing, viewing, or hiding a handle if the labels or flow differ in your account.

Handle URLs and older channel links
A handle URL is generated automatically when an owner chooses or changes a handle. Existing legacy custom URLs continue to work and redirect to the newer handle-based channel URL, but YouTube no longer lets creators create new custom URLs or change existing ones. Depending on a channel’s history, it may also have an ID-based URL or a legacy username URL. See YouTube’s overview of custom URLs and its explanation of channel URL types.
For handles using characters beyond A–Z, 0–9, or the listed separators, YouTube notes that some people may have difficulty typing them and that some external apps may handle their links poorly. Copied URLs use encoding, and sharing from the YouTube app may sometimes use the channel ID URL instead. If broad compatibility matters, consider a handle that your audience can type easily and test the link in the places where you plan to share it. The handle should be judged by how well it serves your identity and audience—not by an assumed ranking advantage.
