Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the XML files in your Windows XP Temp folder contain Logitech copyright text, “Fisheye,” and references to image, texture, model, or .LVF files, they are Logitech webcam-effect resource definitions—not evidence of spyware merely because their filenames look random. They are usually leftover or staging files from Logitech webcam software and can normally be deleted when related programs are closed.
What the XML sample reveals
XML is a plain-text format for structured data. Programs use it for settings, metadata, resource descriptions, language strings, installers, and application state. The .xml extension does not identify a file as safe, malicious, or related to Microsoft Office.

- Logitech attribution: the copyright and author fields name Logitech, Inc.
- “Fisheye”: this is a webcam visual effect.
- Resource references: the XML points to an image, texture, model, and Logitech package file.
- Localization: language IDs and translated strings are normal application data.
- GUID: the long identifier is an application-generated ID, not proof of infection.
That combination is consistent with Logitech webcam or QuickCam-era software. The excerpt does not establish the exact camera model, installer version, or which Logitech component left the files behind. The original case and sample are documented in this forum thread.

Why would Logitech files be in Temp?
Windows Temp directories are working areas used by legitimate applications as well as malware. Logitech software may place these resources there for several reasons:
- An installer extracted the webcam-effect package before copying it into the program directory.
- An update or repair operation staged files temporarily.
- The webcam application copied effect definitions into a runtime cache.
- An interrupted installation, crash, reboot, or locked file prevented cleanup.
- A background webcam utility recreated the files whenever it started.
A Temp location suggests temporary or staging use, but location alone cannot prove who created a file.
Which Temp folder does Windows XP use?
For a logged-in user, the usual path is:
C:Documents and Settings<username>Local SettingsTemp
Windows XP also has a system-wide directory:
C:WindowsTemp
The simplest way to open the active user’s Temp folder is:
The Tool Desk

- Designed to clean debris and material build-up from metal files and rasp teeth.
- Wood handle for comfortable and secure grip.
- Universal design for use with all file and rasp styles.
- Steel fill material, resists rust and corrosion, can be used for a long time.
- Pack of 2 file card, 8" full length.
- Click Start and then Run.
- Enter
%TEMP%. - Press Enter.
How to inspect the files safely
- Make a copy of an XML file if you may need it for troubleshooting.
- Open the copy with Notepad rather than launching an unknown associated program.
- Look for vendor names, product names, executable paths, URLs, and references to scripts.
- Do not follow links, launch referenced programs, or rename an unfamiliar file to another extension.
- Check the file’s Properties for Created, Modified, and Accessed times.
In this case, Logitech copyright, localized “Fisheye” strings, and image/model references are strong benign indicators. A normal-looking XML document is useful evidence, not a complete malware assessment.
How to confirm which program created them
Correlate timestamps
- Right-click the XML file and choose Properties.
- Record its timestamps.
- Start and stop the Logitech webcam application.
- Refresh the Temp folder and see whether files with new timestamps appear.
Check installed Logitech software
- Open Control Panel → Add or Remove Programs and look for Logitech or QuickCam entries.
- Inspect
C:Program FilesLogitechfor webcam software. - Review Windows XP startup entries for Logitech webcam utilities.
A Logitech folder by itself is not proof. The strongest identification combines the XML contents, timestamps, program behavior, and the executable that owns the file.
Use Process Explorer for an open file
Microsoft Sysinternals Process Explorer can show which process currently has a file open:

- Designed to clean debris and material build-up from metal files and rasp teeth.
- Wood handle for comfortable and secure grip.
- Universal design for use with all file and rasp styles.
- Steel fill material, resists rust and corrosion, can be used for a long time.
- Pack of 4 file card, 8" full length.
- Download it from Microsoft Sysinternals.
- Run it with administrative rights if Windows requests them.
- Choose Find → Find Handle or DLL.
- Search for the XML filename.
- Inspect the owning process and its executable path.
- Confirm that the path and publisher match expected Logitech software.
Process Explorer cannot identify a creator if the file is already closed. For a closed file, timestamps, startup behavior, and temporarily disabling Logitech software provide better evidence.
Can you delete the XML files?
Normally, yes—when the XML clearly contains Logitech resource data and no related software is active.
- Close Logitech webcam software, video-chat programs, browsers using the camera, and installers.
- Open
%TEMP%. - Sort by Date Modified and select the identified XML files or clearly old Temp contents.
- Press Delete.
- If Windows says a file is in use, choose Skip; do not force-delete it.
- Restart Windows XP and check whether the files return.
Deleting Temp files does not uninstall Logitech software. The webcam program may recreate its resource definitions the next time it needs the effect package. Reappearance alone is not evidence of malware.

Optional command-line cleanup
After identifying the files, an experienced user can remove XML files under the current user’s Temp directory with:
del /s /q "%TEMP%*.xml"
This command does not determine whether files are safe, may report errors for locked files, and is not required. Inspecting and deleting selected files in Explorer is safer. Avoid indiscriminately deleting the entire C:WindowsTemp directory or using aggressive third-party cleaners.
If the files keep coming back
- Record the exact filename and creation time.
- Close or temporarily disable Logitech webcam utilities.
- Restart Windows XP.
- Observe whether new XML files appear before launching other applications.
- Re-enable programs one at a time.
- If the files return immediately after Logitech software starts, the association is strong.
- If they appear at startup without Logitech software, inspect startup entries and scheduled tasks.
- If they appear while another application is running, investigate that application instead.
Repeated deletion only removes the current artifacts. The owning process must be identified if you want to stop regeneration. If deletion fails, close the related programs, restart, and try before launching the webcam software; Safe Mode can be used for inspection if necessary. Do not change system permissions merely to remove a harmless Temp file.

When should malware be considered?
The XML extension is not diagnostic. Investigate further when:
- The content references unknown executables, scripts, or unexpected locations.
- An unfamiliar process repeatedly creates the files.
- The owning executable sits in an unusual directory or has no recognizable publisher.
- Files appear when no known application is running.
- You also see browser redirects, pop-ups, crashes, unexplained network activity, or disabled security tools.
- Antivirus software flags the file or its associated executable.
The XML itself can be harmless even if an unwanted process created it, so focus on the creating process and executable path. Scan from a trusted, current security environment where possible.
Windows XP security warning
The original question dates to August 16, 2008, and the sample’s Logitech copyright spans 2004–2007. Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle information. Old antivirus definitions and cleanup tools cannot provide the protection of a supported system. For an internet-connected computer, migrating to a supported operating system or replacing the hardware is a safer long-term remedy than relying on Temp cleanup.
