The three broad security threats to a wireless network are loss of confidentiality, loss of integrity, and loss of availability. In practice, that can mean someone observing data, an attacker intercepting or altering communications, or interference that prevents people from connecting. These are outcomes, not an exhaustive list or a ranking of today’s Wi-Fi risks.
1. Confidentiality: eavesdropping and exposure
Wi-Fi sends signals through the air, so a person within range may be able to observe network traffic. If the traffic is not encrypted, its contents may be readable. Encryption used by websites and other services helps protect content in transit, but it does not make a connection anonymous: an observer may still learn some network metadata, such as IP addresses, domains, or the services being used. NIST discusses these foundational WLAN risks in its Guide to Securing Legacy IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks; the metadata distinction is also explained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

This does not mean that every public Wi-Fi connection exposes passwords. The risk depends on the network, the protections used by the services you access, and an attacker’s ability to observe traffic.
2. Integrity: interception, impersonation, or modification
Integrity means that data reaches its destination without unauthorized changes and that a device is communicating with the service or network it intends to reach. A rogue access point—one that is unauthorized or impersonates a legitimate hotspot—can place an attacker between a device and its destination. That position can enable interception or manipulation, particularly when a connection or service is misconfigured or lacks adequate protection. Joining a public hotspot does not automatically make a man-in-the-middle attack happen.

NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue entry on untrusted networks advises avoiding untrusted and unencrypted Wi-Fi for sensitive services and verifying a network’s identity with the venue when necessary. If a café, hotel, or airport network name is unclear, ask staff which one is official before connecting.
3. Availability: disruption
Availability means that users can reach the network and its services when needed. Wireless service can be degraded or stopped by denial-of-service techniques, including radio interference (jamming) or overwhelming network traffic (flooding). NIST describes these as WLAN threats in its legacy wireless security guide. Radio-based disruption can be difficult to counter, and no ordinary user setting can guarantee uninterrupted Wi-Fi.

This is a security risk to recognize, not a reason to attempt interference: disrupting radio communications can affect other users and services as well as the intended target.
How to reduce wireless network risk
If you are using someone else’s Wi-Fi
- Avoid untrusted or unencrypted Wi-Fi for sensitive services.
- Confirm the network name with venue staff when there is doubt. A familiar-looking name alone does not establish that an access point is legitimate.
- Remember that encryption can protect content without hiding all connection metadata.
If you manage a home WLAN
Protecting a wireless network is an ongoing responsibility involving access points, client devices, and other WLAN components—not just the purchase of a router. NIST’s SP 800-153, Guidelines for Securing Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), frames security across design, deployment, maintenance, configuration, and monitoring. Keep those components and their configurations under review throughout their lifecycle.

If you manage an organization’s WLAN
- Define which access points and users are authorized.
- Secure, configure, and monitor WLAN components, and assess the network regularly.
- Treat wireless access control and intrusion detection as relevant controls, not as a substitute for broader security practices.
NIST SP 800-153 was published in February 2012, and its detailed threat discussion draws on a 2008 legacy WLAN guide. These documents support the underlying concepts and lifecycle approach; they should not be treated as a complete current enterprise baseline or a present-day checklist of settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the three-part framework
| Security property | What can go wrong | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Confidentiality | Traffic is observed; unencrypted content may be exposed, while some metadata can remain visible even when content is encrypted. | Use trusted networks for sensitive services and understand the limits of transport encryption. |
| Integrity | A rogue access point or another suitable attacker position may enable interception, impersonation, or modification. | Verify uncertain network identities and secure WLAN components and configurations. |
| Availability | Interference or traffic flooding disrupts wireless service. | Recognize that disruption is possible; network administrators should monitor and assess WLANs, though no single measure guarantees service. |
The categories describe what security property is harmed; they do not say which threat is most common or severe. A rogue access point is one possible attack path affecting confidentiality or integrity, not a fourth high-level outcome. Wireless security depends on the people and devices using a network as well as its access points, and it must be maintained over time.
