What Are the Risks of Investing in Quantum Computing Companies?

Quantum-computing companies face technology, commercialization, funding, customer-concentration, and forecast risks. Company filings show why investors should assess milestones, revenue quality, and financial resilience separately.

The main risks are that technical milestones may be delayed or fail, useful commercial demand may not develop, and companies may need more capital before they become profitable. Company filings illustrate these risks, but they do not establish that every quantum-computing company has the same technology, finances, or prospects.

Why quantum-computing investments carry unusual uncertainty

Investing in a quantum-computing company means taking exposure to both a developing technology and a business whose commercial model may still be unproven. A functioning prototype, a published roadmap, or access to a system through the cloud does not by itself show that the company can build larger useful systems, attract repeat customers, or earn enough to cover research and operating costs.

IonQ and Rigetti are two public pure-play examples, not proxies for the entire sector. Their 2025 annual filings describe company-specific technical, commercial, and financial risks. Those filings are useful evidence of what the companies disclose; they are not independent validation of the technology or an investment recommendation.

Can the company deliver its technical roadmap?

Quantum hardware has to progress through difficult development and scaling milestones. A company may miss its targets for qubit count, fidelity, error correction, integration, or system scale; even reaching a technical milestone does not guarantee a commercially useful machine.

IonQ’s 2025 Form 10-K says it had not produced a scalable quantum computer and warns that research milestones could take longer than expected or never occur. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K describes roadmap changes and missed or at-risk milestones, and says it remains in the technology-development phase. A roadmap is a statement of intended progress, not a guarantee of delivery.

When assessing execution, look beyond a headline qubit count. Ask what the company has achieved against prior milestones, whether its roadmap has changed, and how the measured system relates to larger, useful applications. Comparisons are meaningful only when the underlying architectures, test conditions, and metrics are understood.

Will technical progress turn into paying demand?

A company can make technical progress without finding enough customers willing to pay for its systems or services. Revenue may come from research or development work rather than repeat commercial use, and customer interest does not necessarily translate into sales large enough to support the costs of research, manufacturing, sales, and operations.

IonQ says its ability to generate enough revenue to become profitable depends heavily on further system development and commercialization. Rigetti says it has not yet formed a scalable business model and may never become profitable. These are issuer disclosures about their own prospects, not a prediction that either outcome will occur.

To judge commercial traction, examine the nature of revenue: system sales, cloud access, development contracts, or other work; whether customers renew or use the service repeatedly; and whether demand comes from a broad commercial base or a narrower set of research and public-sector programs.

Do losses create a need for more capital?

Developing quantum systems can require substantial spending before a company has a profitable business. IonQ reported a $633.7 million loss from operations for 2025 and an accumulated deficit of $1,194.1 million as of December 31, 2025. Rigetti reported net losses of $216.2 million in 2025 and $201.0 million in 2024, and an accumulated deficit of $771.0 million as of December 31, 2025.

The measures are not directly comparable: IonQ’s cited figure is a loss from operations, while Rigetti’s figures are net losses. Neither measure, by itself, shows cash burn or how long a company can operate without raising capital. A proper assessment also requires current cash-flow statements, cash and equivalents, expected spending, debt, and contractual commitments.

Rigetti says it needs substantial cash for research and operations and may need additional capital sooner than planned; it warns that difficulty raising funds could force development reductions or delays. If a company sells additional shares to fund operations, existing shareholders may be diluted. The cited filings do not establish a specific future share issuance, amount, or timing.

How concentrated and durable is revenue?

Revenue composition can reveal how much commercial adoption a company has achieved and how dependent it is on particular customers or contract types. Rigetti says the substantial majority of its current revenue comes from development contracts and identifies public-sector customer concentration as a risk. That disclosure applies to Rigetti, not automatically to every company in the sector.

Development contracts and government research awards can provide funding and support technical work, but they are not the same evidence as recurring demand from a wide base of commercial customers. Compare each company’s revenue sources, customer concentration, contract duration, and renewal record rather than assuming one issuer’s mix describes the industry.

How reliable are technical metrics and forecasts?

Technical measurements need their test basis and limitations. Rigetti reported two-qubit gate fidelity figures for its 84-qubit and 36-qubit systems based on internal testing, and cautioned investors not to place undue reliance on the fidelity measures presented in its filing. These are issuer-reported measurements, not independently verified comparisons. A single fidelity figure does not establish quantum advantage or customer value.

Targets and market forecasts also involve uncertainty. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K says: “our goals and objectives are aspirational and are not guarantees or promises that such goals and objectives will be met.” Treat company targets as forward-looking expectations rather than achieved results, and distinguish them from demonstrated performance.

A stock price may reflect expectations about future products and revenue well ahead of current commercial results. The cited filings do not establish current share valuations, valuation multiples, or likely returns, so those require separate, current analysis.

A practical framework for comparing companies

  • Technology and execution: Review the architecture, milestone history, roadmap changes, measurement methods, and route from laboratory results to useful larger systems.
  • Commercialization: Identify what customers pay for, whether use or purchases recur, and whether revenue reflects broad commercial demand or development work.
  • Financial resilience: Read current cash-flow statements alongside losses; check cash, planned spending, debt, contractual commitments, and potential funding needs.
  • Customer and revenue concentration: Look for dependence on public-sector awards, a small number of counterparties, or contracts with limited duration.
  • Forecast and valuation risk: Separate aspirational targets from completed milestones, and assess valuation independently of the company’s technical narrative.

The figures above come from IonQ’s and Rigetti’s filings for fiscal 2025, reported in 2026; financial condition can change quickly. This evidence does not provide a comparable current cash-runway analysis for the two companies or cover every listed or private quantum-computing business.
