Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteshadPS4’s published minimums are a CPU with at least 4 cores and 6 threads, a clock speed above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support; a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM and Vulkan 1.3 support for two required extensions; 8GB of RAM; and a supported operating system. Meeting these minimums does not guarantee that a particular PS4 game will run or run well: compatibility is game-specific, and shadPS4 remains in early development.
shadPS4 minimum PC requirements at a glance
The official shadPS4 Quick Start, edited September 30, 2026, sets out minimum requirements rather than a recommended configuration or a promise of playable performance.

| Component | Published minimum | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | At least 4 cores and 6 threads; above 2.5 GHz; x86-64-v3 support | Check all three properties, not just the processor’s advertised core count or frequency. |
| GPU | At least 2GB VRAM; Vulkan 1.3, including VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor |
Confirm the specific GPU and its installed driver support the Vulkan version and both extensions. |
| Memory | 8GB RAM or more | The current Quick Start does not state a separate recommended RAM amount. |
| Operating system | Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26 | The repository specifies macOS 26.0 or newer and says Intel Macs are unsupported. |
These are a combined checklist: satisfying the RAM requirement, for example, does not make up for a CPU that lacks the required instruction-set baseline or a GPU without the necessary Vulkan support. Each component has its own pass/fail details, and the listed operating system is part of the checklist too.

The project materials reviewed do not specify a higher “recommended” PC, a target frame rate, or per-game benchmark results. That means there is no official basis here for claiming that a particular upgrade will make every title playable. First establish whether your current system meets each published requirement; then check the intended game separately.

What the CPU requirement means
shadPS4’s CPU minimum combines core count, thread count, clock speed, and architecture. The processor must have at least 4 cores and 6 threads, run above 2.5 GHz, and support the x86-64-v3 baseline. A “quad-core” label by itself does not establish that it meets the full requirement.
The Quick Start gives examples of processor generations expected to satisfy the architecture requirement: Intel Haswell or newer, AMD Excavator or newer, and Apple M1 or newer when using Rosetta 2. These examples do not remove the need to check the other CPU criteria. On Apple hardware, the stated M1-and-newer path uses Rosetta 2; Intel Macs are not supported by the repository’s platform notes.
When comparing a processor with the minimum, treat the generation examples and the numerical requirements as separate checks. A listed generation helps you assess the x86-64-v3 baseline, but you still need the required core and thread counts and a clock above 2.5 GHz. Conversely, seeing a high advertised clock or enough cores does not prove support for the baseline. The guide does not name individual processor models beyond its generation examples, so verify the exact CPU rather than assuming that a product-family label settles every criterion.
For Apple silicon, the Quick Start’s example is M1 or newer with Rosetta 2. That does not mean any Mac meets the platform requirements: the repository rules out Intel Macs, and the operating-system version also needs to match. Confirm both the Mac’s processor type and macOS version before treating it as a candidate.
What to check on the graphics card
The GPU minimum is not simply a VRAM target. The card must have at least 2GB of VRAM and support Vulkan 1.3, including both VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor. A model name or memory figure alone cannot confirm those capabilities, since driver support also matters.
Before choosing or troubleshooting a GPU, check its specifications and the capabilities exposed by its current graphics driver. The official guide recommends current graphics drivers and warns that an outdated driver for another graphics card in the same computer—including integrated graphics—can also cause problems. Update drivers for all installed graphics devices, not only the one you expect shadPS4 to use.

In practical terms, compare four GPU details: the VRAM amount, Vulkan version, support for VK_KHR_swapchain, and support for VK_KHR_push_descriptor. The two extension names are specific requirements, not optional extras that can be inferred from Vulkan 1.3 alone in a shopping listing. Check the vendor’s current specifications and the installed driver’s reported capabilities for the actual card. If any one of these details is missing or uncertain, the available official information does not confirm that the GPU complies.

There is no named graphics-card recommendation or model-to-model comparison in the official material reviewed. If your current GPU falls short, a graphics card with Vulkan 1.3 support and at least 2GB VRAM may be a sensible search filter, but confirm both named extensions before choosing a particular model. VRAM capacity by itself is not enough to recommend a card, and no price or performance uplift can be promised from the published requirements.
RAM and supported operating systems
The stated memory floor is 8GB of RAM. The current Quick Start does not publish a higher recommended amount, so there is no official recommended-memory figure to treat as a target. A system with more memory still needs to meet the CPU, GPU, and OS requirements.
The Quick Start names Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, and macOS 26. The project repository clarifies that the macOS minimum is 26.0 and that Intel Macs are unsupported. The named versions are the published minimum examples; do not assume that an older release or a different macOS processor type is supported just because it can run other applications.
The README describes shadPS4 as an emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS, while the Quick Start gives particular operating-system minimums. For a straightforward check against the stated requirements, use the named versions—Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26—and note the repository’s macOS 26.0-or-newer and Apple-silicon constraints. The broader mention of Linux is not a reason to assume every distribution or version is covered by the same published minimum list.

Check your PC against the requirements
- Identify the CPU. Look up its core and thread counts, clock speed, and x86-64-v3 support. Compare each property with the published CPU minimum; for Apple silicon, note that the documented route is M1 or newer using Rosetta 2.
- Identify the active GPU and driver. Confirm at least 2GB of VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and both
VK_KHR_swapchainandVK_KHR_push_descriptor. Check the installed driver’s capabilities rather than relying on the card name alone. - Check installed RAM. Verify the system has 8GB or more.
- Check the operating system and Mac type if applicable. Compare your installation with Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04, or macOS 26; on macOS, the repository specifies version 26.0 or later and excludes Intel Macs.
- Look up the specific game. Use the project’s compatibility list to check the title you intend to play. Hardware compliance does not establish that the game works.
It helps to keep the system check and the game check distinct. The first answers whether the PC matches the published baseline. The second answers what the project currently reports about an individual title. Neither is a substitute for the other: a compatible game still needs a PC that meets the minimums, and a PC that meets every minimum can still encounter a title that does not work.
If a hardware detail is unclear, do not treat an unknown as a confirmed pass. For example, a GPU listing that mentions only memory capacity leaves Vulkan and extension support unresolved; a CPU description that says “4 cores” leaves thread count and x86-64-v3 unresolved. The requirement table is useful precisely because each specification can be checked independently.
Minimum requirements do not guarantee a playable game
shadPS4 is an early PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS, and its project documentation cautions that many games do not work. Titles that do work may still have emulation issues. As a result, the minimum PC specification cannot be translated into a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, or smooth experience for any particular game.
Recommended Free Tools
Compatibility is tied to the individual game and can change as the emulator develops. Check the compatibility list for your title rather than treating a successful result with one game as proof that another will work. The official materials do not provide a project-endorsed recommended PC tier or per-game performance benchmarks, so a stronger specification alone is not evidence of a particular outcome.
The Quick Start warning is explicit: “shadPS4 is still early in development. Many games do not work, and the few that do work usually face various emulation issues.” The repository similarly says not to expect a flawless experience. These caveats matter even if your PC clears the hardware baseline: emulator compatibility and emulation quality are not measured by the requirements list.
In other words, there is no reliable shortcut from “my PC meets the minimums” to “my game will run smoothly.” Check the game-specific compatibility entry and keep in mind that status may change as development continues. The official sources reviewed do not publish performance estimates that would let you predict a particular resolution, frame rate, or level of stability from your PC’s specifications.

Installation and game-file prerequisites
The Quick Start directs users to the QtLauncher; core releases are also available as a command-line tool. On Windows, the guide lists Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 as a prerequisite for QtLauncher. Follow the current setup instructions for the release and operating system you use.
For game content, the official setup guide says that games, updates, and DLC are copyrighted and must be dumped from your own copy. This requirement concerns the content you use; it does not change the PC hardware checklist.
These are setup and content prerequisites, not extra hardware specifications. In particular, the Visual C++ 2022 prerequisite is identified for QtLauncher on Windows; the supplied material does not present it as a replacement for any CPU, GPU, RAM, or operating-system requirement. Similarly, having game files does not establish that shadPS4 supports the title, so consult compatibility information as well.
An Xbox controller or DualShock controller is optional rather than part of the PC requirements. The project README says both work out of the box, but you do not need either to satisfy the computer’s published hardware checklist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common requirement-checking mistakes
- Choosing a GPU by VRAM alone: 2GB is only one part of the GPU requirement. Vulkan 1.3 and both named extensions must also be supported.
- Checking only CPU cores: The minimum also specifies at least 6 threads, a clock above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support.
- Ignoring secondary graphics devices: Keep drivers current for integrated and discrete GPUs installed in the system, as the official guide warns that an outdated driver for another card can interfere.
- Assuming that minimum means recommended: The requirements are published minimums; the guide does not give a higher recommended build or promise smooth play.
- Assuming every PS4 game is supported: The project explicitly warns that many games do not work and that working titles can have emulation issues. Verify the game separately.
- Treating a generation example as a complete CPU check: Haswell, Excavator, and M1-or-newer are architecture examples, but count, thread, and clock criteria still need checking.
- Assuming any Linux distribution is specifically listed: The Quick Start names Ubuntu 22.04. The README’s broader reference to Linux does not state a separate minimum for every distribution.
- Buying before verifying the extensions: The official material does not endorse a particular graphics card. Confirm Vulkan 1.3 and both required extensions on the exact model and current driver before making a hardware choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run shadPS4 with a quad-core CPU?
Possibly, but the core count alone is not enough. The published minimum is at least 4 cores and 6 threads, above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support. Check all of those properties for your exact processor.
Is a GPU with 2GB of VRAM enough for shadPS4?
Only if it also supports Vulkan 1.3 and the VK_KHR_swapchain and VK_KHR_push_descriptor extensions. The official requirement is not based on VRAM alone, and current graphics drivers matter.

How much RAM does shadPS4 need?
The published minimum is 8GB or more. The current Quick Start does not give a separate recommended RAM amount.
Does meeting the minimum mean my PS4 game will work?
No. The project says many games do not work, and titles that do work may still have emulation issues. Check the compatibility list for the specific game; the minimum requirements do not guarantee a frame rate, resolution, or smooth experience.
Does shadPS4 support Intel Macs?
No. The project repository says Intel Macs are unsupported. Its macOS notes specify macOS 26.0 or newer; the Quick Start gives Apple M1 or newer with Rosetta 2 as the CPU path.
Do I need a controller or a specific launcher?
The Quick Start directs users to QtLauncher, while core releases are also available as a command-line tool. The README says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box, but a controller is optional, not a PC requirement. Windows QtLauncher also lists Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 as a prerequisite.
The Bottom Line
For the published minimum, check every item: a CPU with at least 4 cores and 6 threads, above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 support; a GPU with at least 2GB VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and both required extensions; 8GB RAM; and a listed supported OS. Keep all graphics drivers current, then check the compatibility list for the game you want. Meeting the checklist is not a guarantee that a title will run or run well.
