What Are the Best Minecraft Settings for Better FPS on Java and Bedrock?

For smoother Minecraft, lower the settings that increase rendering or world updates. Java players can tune render and simulation distance separately; Bedrock players can choose Simple graphics and reduce visual effects.

What are the best Minecraft settings for better FPS on Java and Bedrock? Lower the settings that make the game draw or update more of the world, then test one change at a time. In Java, start with Render Distance and tune Simulation Distance separately. In Bedrock, try Simple graphics, a lower field of view, and fewer visual effects. There is no single best chunk count or preset for every device, so keep the settings that improve smoothness without sacrificing more visibility or detail than you want.

First, identify what kind of lag you have

Low frame rate is a client-side graphics problem: the picture stutters or updates slowly. Network or server lag is different. High ping, delayed block actions, and slow world activity can happen even when your local frame rate is smooth. Microsoft distinguishes client rendering performance from server performance and world simulation in its Minecraft performance guidance.

  • Likely FPS trouble: the view is visibly choppy, and changing graphics options affects it.
  • Likely network or server trouble: your view remains smooth, but other players, block actions, or world updates arrive late.

Settings below can reduce work on your device; they cannot repair a slow server or unstable connection.

Which settings should you change first?

Start with the settings that increase how much the client must draw or process. Make one adjustment, play in the same area under similar conditions, and compare. If there is no useful improvement, restore it before trying another change. This makes it easier to find a workable balance rather than lowering every visual option unnecessarily.

Render Distance: reduce how much world you see

Render Distance controls how far away the client draws blocks, entities, and other visible objects. A larger distance means more graphics work and can reduce frame rate, according to Microsoft’s explanation of render distance. Lower it in small steps until movement is smoother, then raise it again if you want more visibility and the game remains responsive. The right setting depends on the device, world, and preferred view; official guidance does not establish one best chunk count for everyone.

Particles: try a lower density if effects are heavy

Particle effects can become costly at high render distances. Microsoft Learn identifies particles as a possible performance factor, so reducing particle density is a reasonable optional test if the more impactful distance changes are not enough. The visual tradeoff is fewer visible effects.

Best settings for Minecraft Java Edition

Java has separate Render Distance and Simulation Distance controls. Treat them as different choices: one affects what is drawn, while the other limits how far the world continues updating.

Lower Render Distance, then tune Simulation Distance

Begin by lowering Render Distance and checking whether frame pacing improves. Next, reduce Simulation Distance if the client still struggles. Mojang says entities, blocks, and fluids outside Simulation Distance are not updated; separating it from Render Distance lets players retain a higher visual distance with less CPU load. See Mojang’s Simulation Distance explanation.

Reducing Simulation Distance can mean that activity farther from you does not continue in the same way. Try a lower value and raise it incrementally if you need more nearby world activity. The balance varies with your CPU, the world, and how much distant activity matters to your play. Do not assume that a particular number of chunks is universally best.

Leave the experimental Vulkan option alone unless troubleshooting

Mojang describes Prefer Vulkan as experimental and recommends Default unless players are experiencing issues. Vulkan may reduce performance or cause instability on some systems, so it is not a routine FPS-boost setting. Details are in Mojang’s current Java system requirements.

Best settings for Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Bedrock’s available graphics options vary by platform. On PC, console, or mobile, use the controls your version exposes rather than expecting identical menus everywhere. Minecraft Help’s Bedrock video settings guidance recommends these lower-resource choices:

  • Set graphics mode to Simple for the lowest resource use. Fancy is described as using a moderate amount of resources.
  • Reduce FOV below its default of 60 degrees if a narrower view is comfortable. A narrower field of view shows less peripheral scenery.
  • Turn off Fancy Leaves, Fancy Bubbles, Render Clouds, and FOV Can Be Altered By Gameplay where those options are available.
  • With Simple graphics, also try switching off Beautiful Skies and Smooth Lighting if you need further improvement.

These changes trade visual detail or effects for reduced resource use. If you use Vibrant Visuals and performance drops, Minecraft Help suggests selecting Favor Performance, lowering custom effect sliders, or switching to Simple or Fancy graphics. Vibrant Visuals uses more resources; see Minecraft Help’s Vibrant Visuals guidance.

If changing settings does not solve the problem

Check whether your Java device meets the stated baseline

Mojang’s requirements, published July 21, 2026, set a minimum target of 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings and a recommended target of 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings. They are reference targets, not a promise of the same result in every world or on every setup.

Java requirements (Mojang, 2026) Minimum target Recommended target
Resolution and graphics target 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy
Memory 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics 16 GB RAM
Processor Four-core processor Not stated by Mojang’s requirements
Graphics Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU with at least 2 GB VRAM Graphics card with 6 GB VRAM

If your system falls below the minimum, Mojang says performance and visual quality are not guaranteed. The requirements can help explain why settings alone may not deliver the result you want; they do not predict an individual player’s FPS. Consult the full Java Edition system requirements for the current details.

For Bedrock, follow the platform troubleshooting sequence

Minecraft Help recommends updating Minecraft and your operating system, updating Windows graphics drivers when playing on Windows, checking minimum requirements, temporarily disabling add-ons, and then adjusting video settings. Follow the applicable steps in Bedrock graphics troubleshooting. Driver updates apply to Windows; other platforms have their own update process.

How to find your own smoothest settings

  1. Stand in a representative area of your usual world and note whether the issue is choppy rendering or delayed network/world activity.
  2. Lower Render Distance and test. In Bedrock, also test Simple graphics and the listed visual effects; in Java, try Simulation Distance separately.
  3. Change only one option at a time, then compare in similar conditions so you can tell which change helped.
  4. Keep the visual quality and visibility you prefer, and restore changes that make no noticeable difference.
  5. If performance remains poor, use the relevant platform troubleshooting steps and compare your device with the published requirements.
