What Are the Best Early Technologies in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Prioritize Bronze Works, Gardening, Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone—but let your current quest, point colors, and mastery gates shape the order.

For a practical opening route in Graveyard Keeper 2, prioritize Bronze Works, Gardening, Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone. They unlock useful early crafting and building options and support the first farming request. Treat that as a flexible route, not a mandatory order: spend points toward your next quest or material bottleneck, and check each node’s prerequisites and mastery gates before buying.

Which technologies should you unlock first?

A beginner guide updated October 1, 2026 for PC update 1.007 recommends these five technologies for the opening. The costs below are technology-point costs, not a measure of time or difficulty.

Technology Cost Why it matters early
Bronze Works 5 red Opens a Wooden Anvil and Bronze Nails made from Bronze Scrap.
Gardening 5 green Opens garden beds needed for Herm’s wheat request.
Chopping 8 red Unlocks wood wedges and firewood.
Woodworking I 10 red Unlocks Wooden Planks, used in many early recipes.
The Concept of Stone 15 red Allows you to make Pieces of stone.

These costs and benefits are listed in the Keeper’s Field Guide II beginner guide. A first-week walkthrough recommends the same core options, though it places Chopping and The Concept of Stone before Woodworking I. That makes either sequence reasonable: choose based on the materials or quest you need next.

How should you order the opening route?

Start with the next practical bottleneck

Choose Gardening early if you are working on Herm’s farming request; plant the wheat once the beds are available, then work on other tasks while it grows. If construction materials are holding you up, prioritize Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone, subject to their mastery requirements. Bronze Works is a useful early Metallurgy gateway, but it does not unlock every bronze recipe.

Check the free starter technology

The first sleep at home grants The Concept of Wood and a Sawhorse for free, according to the first-week walkthrough. A technology planner lists The Concept of Wood with a cost of 2 red and 2 green points; that is the node’s listed cost, not a reason to spend those points if the opening reward has already granted it. Check your technology tree before budgeting for it.

Follow quests rather than buying far ahead

After the core opening, let your active quest determine the next purchase. The current beginner guide advises following the next quest instead of unlocking technologies far in advance. This keeps limited point colors available for nodes you can use now.

What do the point colors and mastery gates mean?

Collect points as you work

Chopping, mining, clearing junk, and harvesting produce technology points, according to the game-data technology reference. Red and green points are comparatively accessible early; blue points are scarcer and can come from autopsy actions. Points left on the ground persist and are collected when you sleep, and the reference lists a carrying cap of 999 points per color. Gather points during ordinary tasks rather than stopping to grind one activity.

Meet Building mastery requirements

Unlocking a technology does not always mean you can immediately craft its materials. The first-week walkthrough says wood wedges and Pieces of stone require Building mastery level 3, while rusty tools provide only +1 each. Keep relevant tools on your toolbar and earn the first Building talent point through the Lumberjack and Rock Breaker inspirations.

Make an anatomy choice before the first burial

If you want to start anatomy progression, pick a pocket during the autopsy before burial to gain an early blue point, as the walkthrough recommends. The same guide lists Skin and Bones at 5 green and 2 blue points and says it requires the initial Anatomy mastery progression. Blue points are limited early, so consider that cost against the technology you need next.

What does Bronze Works unlock—and what does it not?

Bronze Works and Bronze Craft are separate technologies. Bronze Works costs 5 red points and is a root Metallurgy node that gives access to an anvil. Bronze Craft comes later, after Bronze Melting; it costs 30 red points and unlocks Bronze Detail, according to the game-data reference. The reference says nearly every opening step needs Bronze Detail, which is gated behind three Metallurgy technologies costing 45 red points in total. Do not expect Bronze Works by itself to grant Bronze Detail.

How should you choose when you are unsure?

  • Need common construction materials: work toward Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone, while meeting Building mastery requirements.
  • Working on Herm’s farming request: unlock Gardening and plant the wheat so it can grow while you handle other jobs.
  • Want to open anatomy progression: pick a pocket at the first autopsy before burial, then follow the anatomy unlocks when available.
  • No urgent material or quest target: save points and follow the next active quest rather than buying far ahead.

Compare each option by its relevance to your immediate quest, how many early recipes or builds it enables, its point-color cost, and whether you meet its prerequisites and mastery gates. The available guides do not establish a universally optimal speedrun order or quantify time saved by any route.

What is known about the game’s progression?

The official Lazy Bear Games and tinyBuild Steam announcements describe rebuilding and defending the town, automating production, and leading an undead army. The announcement says the game keeps the familiar Technology Tree while introducing a new talent system. That is the developers’ and publisher’s description, not independent evidence that progression is easier or better balanced.

PC Gamer senior editor Christopher Livingston’s September 22, 2026 account of his own early play mentions unlocking human-fat candles for church decoration. That personal example illustrates the game’s grim crafting loop; it does not show that candles are among the best early technologies.
