They’re part of the system navigation system—your primary controls for moving between screens and apps.
People often ask what those three buttons are called because the icons and labels can differ slightly depending on your phone brand, Android version, and navigation mode.

What those 3 bottom buttons are called
The three standard navigation buttons are:
- Back
- Home
- Recents (sometimes called Overview or Recent apps)
Collectively, they’re usually referred to as Navigation buttons (or 3-button navigation).
Back
The Back button takes you to the previous screen within an app or closes dialogs. On many phones, it’s represented by a left-pointing arrow icon.

If you’re in a settings menu, Back typically returns you to the previous page. If you’re in a single app, Back generally walks you backward through its navigation stack.
Home
The Home button returns you to your home screen (the launcher). Sometimes it also closes the current app and leaves your phone ready for whatever you tap next.
Depending on the device, the icon is commonly a circle, a house symbol, or a minimalist dot.
Recents (Overview / Recent apps)
The Recents button opens your recent apps screen. You can switch between apps, quickly return to something you used recently, or dismiss apps from the list.
On newer Android interfaces, Recents may be labeled Overview, and the button can use a square/stacked-rectangle icon.
Why the names vary (and what you should call them)
Android is flexible. Phone makers can brand the same functions with slightly different names, while keeping the same basic behavior.

Icons can change, but the functions usually don’t. Here are the most common patterns you’ll run into.
Pixel / Google-style navigation
On many Pixel devices using 3-button navigation, the icons are minimalist and consistent with Android’s defaults.
- Back: left arrow
- Home: circle
- Recents / Overview: square/stacked squares
Samsung Galaxy (One UI)
Samsung devices often present similar controls, but the look can differ across One UI versions.
- Back: left arrow
- Home: circle
- Recents / Recent apps: stacked squares icon
On some Samsung builds, tapping Home can also bring up additional behavior depending on navigation settings and accessibility features.

Even if the icons look different, you can identify the buttons by behavior rather than art style. Press Back and watch what changes. Press Home and you’ll exit the app. Press Recents and you’ll see app thumbnails.
How to turn the buttons on (or switch to gestures)
Some phones don’t show the 3-button row at all because they’re set to gesture navigation. The quickest way to confirm what your phone is using is to check system navigation settings.
Android 10+ (most modern phones)
- Open Settings
- Tap System
- Tap Gestures (on many devices) or search for Navigation bar
- Tap System navigation
- Select 3-button navigation
If you’re already on 3-button navigation, you should see Back, Home, and Recents immediately.

- Open Settings
- Tap Display
- Tap Navigation bar
- Choose Button or 3-button navigation (wording varies by One UI version)
If your Galaxy phone is set to gestures, you’ll see a gesture bar or no fixed buttons at all.
If you don’t see 3 buttons: gesture navigation explained
Many Android phones (especially newer ones) default to gestures instead of showing the three buttons. In that case, you still get Back, Home, and Recents behavior—it’s just triggered by swipes.
Gesture bar vs full-screen gestures
Depending on your device, you may see:
- Gesture bar: a small pill at the bottom. Swiping up shows Home and swiping in from the sides triggers Back.
- Full-screen gestures: no persistent icons; the whole screen area becomes gesture-sensitive.
If your screen is gesture-only, the “three buttons at the bottom” question usually means you’re noticing the behavior rather than physical buttons.

Common gotchas and troubleshooting
Most navigation problems are configuration issues or app-specific overlays. Here are the fixes that usually work first.
The buttons are swapped or the layout looks “wrong”
On some devices, navigation modes can be toggled (3-button vs gestures), which can make the UI feel different.
- Go to Settings > System (or Settings > Display on Samsung)
- Reconfirm you’re on 3-button navigation
- Restart your phone if the UI doesn’t update immediately
Back doesn’t work the way you expect
Some apps use their own in-app navigation. If Back exits too far or not far enough, that’s often app behavior.
- Try tapping Back from the screen edge (if your phone supports edge-swipe Back)
- Check for overlays: Settings > Apps > Special access (wording varies) and look for “Appear on top” permissions
- If it’s app-specific, update the app from Google Play and test again
Recents shows the wrong app or freezes
If the Recents/Overview screen stutters or shows stale thumbnails, it can be a temporary system UI problem.
- Force-stop the problematic app: Settings > Apps > (app name) > Force stop
- Reboot the phone
- If it persists, clear cache for system UI (if your device exposes that option) or do a system update
On Android, these failures are often fixed by a patch-level update rather than deeper changes.

Keyboard and accessibility notes
If you use a hardware keyboard, navigation can behave differently. Many Android devices map Home/Back to keys in external keyboards and remotes.
If you rely on accessibility features (like switch access or gesture alternatives), your “three buttons” may not be the primary input method. Check Accessibility settings for navigation assistance options.
Frequently asked questions
What are the three buttons called on Android?
They’re commonly called Back, Home, and Recents (also shown as Overview or Recent apps on some phones).
Why do my buttons say something different than Back/Home/Recents?
Phone makers sometimes rename the Recents button to Overview or adjust wording depending on their One UI/skin. The functions are still Back, Home, and recent apps.
Can I use gestures instead of the buttons?
Yes. In most Android versions you can switch between 3-button navigation and gesture navigation in system navigation settings.
My phone doesn’t show any buttons at the bottom. What does that mean?
Your phone is likely set to gesture navigation. You can re-enable 3-button navigation via Settings by searching for System navigation or Navigation bar.
Are these buttons the same on every Android phone?
The core functions are the same, but icon style, labeling, and behavior details can vary by Android version and manufacturer (for example, Samsung Galaxy with One UI).

The three navigation buttons at the bottom of Android are Back, Home, and Recents (often labeled Overview). If you don’t see them, your phone is probably using gesture navigation instead.
Once you match each button to its behavior—Back goes to the previous screen, Home returns to the launcher, and Recents shows your recent apps—you can navigate confidently across any Android phone, regardless of brand or UI skin.
