The way you locate one depends on your edition: Java Edition uses both the world seed and chunk coordinates, while Bedrock references describe a coordinate-based pattern that does not change with the seed. Use the correct edition and version in a slime-chunk finder, verify the result in your world, then build below Y=40 while keeping nearby caves from filling the hostile-mob cap.

Minecraft divides the Overworld into chunks, each 16 blocks wide and 16 blocks long horizontally. A slime chunk is not a different type of terrain or a visible structure. It is a normal chunk with an additional eligibility flag that allows slime spawning underground.
The Minecraft Wiki’s tutorial describes roughly a 10% chance for every generated chunk to be a slime chunk. The flag alone does not guarantee a slime will appear: the game still needs a valid spawning surface, enough open space, a player in the correct range and room under the hostile-mob cap.

Spawn height and light
In slime chunks, natural slime spawning can occur below Y=40. The light level does not prevent those attempts, so torches can be used for visibility and safety without disabling the farm. You still need a solid, spawnable floor and enough vertical clearance for the largest slime variant that can appear.
That light independence is the main advantage over many ordinary hostile-mob farms. It lets you illuminate the room while concentrating on platform layout, player position and cave control.

What “within spawning range” means
“Slime Chunks are chunks that have the ability to spawn the slime entity when a player is within spawning range.” — Bedrock WIKI, “Slime Chunks”
A qualifying chunk only supplies the location. Spawning is still governed by Minecraft’s normal distance rules. Current finder documentation describes attempts beginning at least 24 blocks from the player, while the farm tutorial uses a 128-block outer despawn boundary. In practice, stand far enough away that you are not inside the 24-block exclusion radius, but keep the platforms within the active area. Mobs beyond the applicable 128-block range can despawn, so an inefficient standing position can reduce or eliminate output.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are not interchangeable
Finders use different calculations for the two editions. Selecting the wrong edition can send you to a chunk that looks correct on a map but never produces slimes in your world.

Do not assume a Java seed map can be used for Bedrock, or that a Bedrock coordinate list will identify the same places in Java. The formulas differ even when the world seed happens to be identical.
Before you search: collect the right information
- Edition: Confirm whether the world runs Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Version: Use a finder that supports your game version and select that version explicitly.
- Seed: Java searches require the world seed. If you do not know it, retrieve it using the normal seed display available for your world and permissions.
- Target area: Decide whether you want a farm near a base, a transport route or a remote technical area. A nearby location is convenient, but excavation and cave spawn-proofing may be easier away from heavily developed terrain.
- Permission and difficulty: Confirm that you can view coordinates and that the world is not set to Peaceful. Peaceful difficulty prevents the hostile-mob spawning behavior a slime farm relies on.
How to find a slime chunk with a seed map
A slime-chunk finder is the fastest method because it calculates the eligible coordinates instead of asking you to test random underground areas. The Minecraft Wiki specifically names the Chunkbase Slime Chunk Finder as an external option.
- Identify the edition and version. Record Java or Bedrock and the version shown by your launcher or game menu. Open a reputable slime-chunk finder and select those settings before entering anything else.
- Enter the Java seed when required. Java’s result depends on the exact seed. A mistyped digit, a seed from a different world or a changed edition produces a different pattern. For Bedrock, follow the finder’s seed instructions; Bedrock references describe coordinate-based results that do not depend on the seed.
- Center the map on your intended region. Search near the base or transport line you will actually use. A technically valid chunk several thousand blocks away may cost more time to develop than a closer one.
- Read the chunk coordinates, not only the highlighted square. Record the X and Z chunk numbers shown by the tool. Keep a screenshot or written copy before travelling in game.
- Convert chunk coordinates to blocks. A chunk with coordinates X and Z covers 16 blocks on each horizontal axis. Its block interval begins at
X × 16andZ × 16, then extends through 15 additional blocks on each axis. For example, chunk (12, -4) begins at block X=192 and block Z=-64 and occupies X=192–207, Z=-64–-49. - Travel to the area and verify the coordinates. In Java, press the key that opens the F3 debug overlay and read the chunk coordinates there. On Bedrock, use the world’s coordinate display, map/tool readout or an available coordinate resource pack. Stand inside the 16-by-16 area identified by the finder before digging.
- Mark the boundaries. Place temporary blocks or torches at the four corners so excavation does not drift into a neighboring chunk. A one-block error at the boundary can put part of a platform outside the intended chunk.
- Test before committing to a large build. Excavate a safe portion below Y=40, provide a valid floor and enough open space, then observe during a properly positioned test session. If nothing appears, use the troubleshooting section before expanding the excavation.
How to lay out the underground farm
The simplest design is one or more spawning platforms inside the selected chunk, with collection and transport added below or beside them. The exact redstone and collection system is a separate engineering choice; the spawning room must first satisfy the game’s rules.
Excavate below Y=40
Every spawning platform intended to use the slime-chunk rule should be below Y=40. Check the Y coordinate of the platform surface rather than the player’s feet at the top of a staircase. Multiple levels can increase usable spawning area if each level leaves enough open space for slimes to appear and move.
Leave room for large slimes
Slimes can appear in different sizes. Do not build a ceiling so low that the largest permitted slime cannot spawn. Measure the clear vertical space from the platform to the next obstruction and remove decorative blocks, beams or lighting fixtures that intrude into that space.

Use light for safety
Because slime-chunk spawning ignores light, torches, lanterns or other lighting can illuminate the room without turning off slime spawning. Lighting also reduces accidental hostile-mob spawns in the farm itself, making maintenance and collection safer.
Control surrounding caves
Natural caves, ravines and dark pockets in the active area compete for hostile-mob spawning attempts. Light them, flood them or otherwise make their surfaces unable to spawn unwanted mobs. This is often the difference between a farm that technically works and one that produces almost nothing: the hostile-mob cap can be consumed elsewhere before the game gets an opportunity to create slimes on your platforms.
Choose a safe player position
Build an AFK or waiting position so the platforms are outside the approximately 24-block exclusion radius but inside the area where spawning and despawning are active. If the player stands on a platform, slimes cannot spawn close enough to that player. If the player waits too far away, mobs on the platforms may despawn or spawning attempts may stop.

Wrong edition, seed or version
Reopen the finder and confirm every setting. Java requires the current world seed. Bedrock and Java use different formulas, so changing only the edition selector can move every highlighted chunk. A game update can also require a different version setting in the finder.

The room is at or above Y=40
Measure the platform’s Y coordinate. Being one or two blocks too high is enough to invalidate the underground slime-chunk rule. Lower the platform rather than relying on darkness; light level is not the problem in a genuine slime chunk.
The player is too close
Move the waiting position at least 24 blocks from the nearest platform. If the room is spread over several levels, measure from the closest spawning surface, not from the center of the excavation.
The player is too far away
Keep the farm within the active range. The tutorial’s 128-block outer boundary is a practical reference for despawning, and finder documentation also uses distance from the player when describing valid attempts. Move the AFK point closer if every platform is outside that area.
Nearby caves are using the mob cap
Temporarily inspect caves, tunnels and open areas around the farm. Light, flood or block every reachable spawning surface in the active area. If output rises after cave control, the chunk was valid and the competing spawns were the bottleneck.
The world is on Peaceful
Switch to a difficulty that permits hostile-mob spawning, subject to the world owner’s rules. A correct chunk and a correctly built platform cannot overcome Peaceful difficulty.
The platform is not valid
Check for a solid floor, sufficient headroom and obstructions that prevent a slime from occupying the spawn space. Decorative slabs, transparent blocks, water placement and tight ceilings can change whether a surface is usable. Remove uncertain blocks during testing so the result is unambiguous.
The selected area is outside the marked chunk
Recheck the 16-by-16 boundaries. Chunk coordinates identify an entire square, but an excavation that slips into a neighboring chunk may put the active platform outside the eligible area. Use the F3 overlay in Java or a Bedrock coordinate readout while marking the corners.

A swamp farm is a genuine alternative when you do not want to locate a particular underground chunk. It uses biome-based spawning rather than the slime-chunk flag, so it avoids seed-map work but introduces different environmental requirements.

Choose a slime chunk when you want a controllable underground installation and are willing to mine and spawn-proof. Choose a swamp when a suitable biome is already nearby and minimizing excavation matters more than maximum convenience or rate.
A practical verification checklist
- Edition and game version match the finder.
- Java world seed is exact, when using Java.
- Finder coordinates have been converted to the correct 16-by-16 block square.
- Chunk boundaries are marked in game.
- Test platforms are below Y=40.
- Floors are solid and the room has enough headroom for large slimes.
- Lighting has been added for safety without assuming darkness is required.
- The waiting position is at least 24 blocks from platforms and within the active area.
- Nearby caves and dark surfaces are lit, flooded or blocked.
- Difficulty is not Peaceful.
- A short test was completed before the full excavation and collection system was built.
Planning the project around your goals
For a small supply of slimeballs
Use one verified platform, make the player position correct and test production before adding more levels. This avoids spending hours clearing caves for a farm whose coordinates or edition setting was wrong.
For a technical-scale farm
Start with the most convenient verified chunk, then plan the entire active area: platform levels, collection route, lighting, cave spawn-proofing and the player’s waiting position. Expand only after the first platform demonstrates that the chunk and spawning conditions are correct.
For a world where mining is undesirable
Look for a swamp and accept its Y=51–69 range and light-level requirement. This trades the underground excavation of a slime chunk for biome travel and surface preparation, with generally lower rates according to the Minecraft Wiki tutorial.
