Pool sticks are usually called pool cues, or simply cues. “Cue stick” is another standard term; “billiard cue” is a broader descriptive name.
What is the stick used to play pool called?
The usual name is “pool cue.” In its Rules of Play, effective September 15, 2025, the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) describes the implement as a “stick (pool cue)” used to strike the cue-ball. The cue-ball then strikes the object-balls.

“Cue” is a shorter everyday alternative, and “cue stick” is also used in the WPA rules. “Billiard cue” is understandable as a general description, but the cited WPA passage uses “pool cue” and “cue-stick.”

Are cue, pool cue, and cue stick different things?
Usually, these terms refer to the same basic implement: the stick a player uses to strike the cue-ball. “Pool cue” is the clearest term when you want to specify pool; “cue” is concise when the context is clear. The WPA’s rules use “Cue-Stick” as an equipment term.

What are the different types of pool cue?
The WPA rules distinguish normal cues, break cues, and jump cues. These names identify cue types and their roles in play; they are not names for different pieces of the table.
- Normal cue: The standard cue used for ordinary shots.
- Break cue: A cue intended for the break shot.
- Jump cue: A cue intended for jump shots.
What do official competition rules say about cue size?
The WPA’s 2024 Recommended Equipment Specifications set competition limits for cue dimensions. These are WPA specifications, not universal measurements for every recreational cue.

Is a mechanical bridge a pool stick?
No. A mechanical bridge is an accessory that supports the cue shaft for difficult-to-reach shots. It helps position the playing cue; it is not the cue used to strike the cue-ball.
