Pool sticks are called cue sticks or simply cues. For the clearest pool-specific term—especially when searching for equipment—use pool cue. “Pool stick” is informal wording.
What is the proper name for a pool stick?
The standard term is cue or cue stick. The World Confederation of Billiards Sports defines a cue as a “tapered device, usually wooden, used to strike the cue ball to execute carom or pocket billiard shots” and notes that it is “also called cue stick.” Read the WCBS glossary.
In pool, pool cue is the most specific and unambiguous name. A player uses the cue to strike the cue ball; the cue ball then contacts the object balls. ActiveSG’s billiards guide describes the cue stick as the implement used to hit the cue ball.
Are “pool cue” and “cue stick” the same thing?
They refer to the same basic equipment. Cue stick is a general name used across cue sports, while pool cue identifies the cue as equipment for pool. Cue is the shorter everyday form. “Pool stick” is understandable casual speech, but it is not the standard equipment term.
