If Active Matter lags in multiplayer on Xbox Series X|S, first check whether Xbox or the game’s services are having problems. Then test your Xbox connection, restart the game and router, install updates, and try Ethernet. These steps help distinguish a service outage or home-network issue from a problem specific to the game; the official FAQ does not document a guaranteed Xbox lag fix.
Check whether the problem is Xbox-wide or specific to Active Matter
Lag can have similar symptoms whether it comes from an Xbox network issue, an interruption to a partner service, or your home connection. Active Matter supports Xbox Series X|S and cross-platform multiplayer, so a problem may affect one service or match without indicating a fault with the console.
- Check Xbox service status for outages or maintenance.
- Check Active Matter’s official support channels for game-service or maintenance notices. Its official FAQ directs players with technical problems to support.
- If you see an error code, search for that code in Xbox Support before changing network settings.
If other online games work normally but Active Matter does not, that is useful evidence to include when contacting the game’s support team; it does not by itself prove a game-side defect.
Test Xbox network quality and NAT
On the Xbox, open Settings > General > Network settings. Run the available network speed and statistics test and the multiplayer connection test, then check the NAT type shown in network settings. Record any error and whether NAT is open, moderate, strict, or unavailable.

A strict or unknown NAT can limit which players your console can connect with. Xbox’s multiplayer connection guidance explains that open NAT has fewer compatibility restrictions. If the test reports a problem, continue with the router and connection checks below; avoid changing several router settings at once, so you can tell what helped.
Restart the game and router, then update the console
- Quit Active Matter completely from the Xbox guide, then launch it again and test multiplayer.
- If the issue remains, restart your router using its normal power or restart procedure. Wait for it to reconnect fully before testing the game again.
- Check for pending updates to the game and Xbox system software, install them, and retest.
These are reversible first steps. If the problem disappears after a restart but returns later, note when it happens and whether other games are affected.

Try a wired Ethernet connection
Connect the Xbox to the router with a wired Ethernet cable, then test the same multiplayer activity. Ethernet is a practical way to check whether Wi‑Fi instability is contributing to lag; a result that improves on Ethernet points toward the wireless link, but does not establish the game’s server condition. If you need a cable, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is one suitable option.
If Ethernet is not practical, test nearer to the router and reduce obstacles or competing wireless activity where possible. Change one condition at a time so the comparison is meaningful.

Review router settings only if simpler checks fail
If Xbox tests continue to show NAT or connectivity problems, review your router’s firewall and port configuration using the router manufacturer’s instructions and Xbox’s current network guidance. Incorrect changes can disrupt connectivity, so note the original settings and revert changes that do not help. DNS settings can also be tested, but changing DNS is not a guaranteed latency fix.
Whether a setting is relevant depends on your router and network; do not open ports simply because lag occurs if the connection tests show no related issue.

When to contact Active Matter support
Contact Active Matter support if lag persists after the service check, connection tests, restart, updates, and an Ethernet comparison—or if the problem occurs across different networks. Include your Xbox model, when the issue began, any error code, NAT result, whether other games lag, and whether wired networking changed the result. The official FAQ says: “If you encounter any problems, please contact our support service.” It does not identify a specific Xbox Series X|S lag patch or a guaranteed workaround.
