Olfactory illusions are misleading smell experiences: what you perceive does not map neatly onto the odor stimulus. A mixture can smell different from its ingredients, one odor can mask another, and a persistent smell may become less noticeable with repeated exposure. These ordinary perceptual effects are not the same as clinical smell distortions such as parosmia or phantosmia.
What is an olfactory illusion?
An olfactory illusion is a mismatch between a smell stimulus and the experience of smelling it. In a 2011 review, Richard J. Stevenson described cases in which the same stimulus can lead to different percepts, or different stimuli can lead to the same percept. That does not mean someone is inventing a smell; it means perception is not a simple readout of what is in the air. Stevenson’s review also notes that smell illusions can be hard to recognize because people have limited ways to verify a smell and little direct awareness of how perception is formed.

Everyday odors are usually mixtures of volatile compounds, not isolated molecules. The percept is therefore shaped by interactions among odorants, sensory processing, and recent exposure. How people perceive complex odor mixtures remains incompletely understood, and can vary among individuals. A review of odor-object perception discusses this complexity.
How can odor mixtures mislead you?
Two or more odorants can produce a percept that differs from the smell of each one alone. A 2009 NIST review describes several effects:

- Masking or suppression: one odorant reduces or overwhelms the perceived sensation of another.
- Conjugation: two odoriferous compounds produce little or no perceived odor when smelled together.
- Cross-adaptation: exposure to one odoriferous compound desensitizes the response to another.
These effects help explain why a smell cannot reliably identify one specific chemical or ingredient. A person may notice only the dominant part of a mixture, or experience a combined odor that does not resemble any one component. NIST’s review of odor conjugation, suppression, and cross-adaptation describes these mixture effects.
What sensory-cell research shows—and does not show
In 2020, NIH summarized research published in Science that measured responses in mouse olfactory sensory neurons. In mixtures, one odor could change a cell’s response to another odor, including when the first odor did not activate that cell on its own. The mixture response was not simply the sum of responses to the individual odors. This is evidence about mouse sensory cells, not direct proof that the identical mechanism explains human perception. NIH’s report quotes Columbia University researcher Elizabeth Hillman: “Our results showed that scent molecules can mask other scents, not by overpowering them, but by changing the way cells respond to them.”

Why does a smell become less noticeable after a while?
Repeated exposure can change responsiveness. A 2017 review distinguishes habituation, a decrease in behavioral response after repeated exposure, from adaptation, the neural processes that contribute to that decrease. In everyday terms, you may stop noticing a persistent background smell even while its source remains. The change in how noticeable it feels does not, by itself, establish that the source or its concentration has changed. The review does not set a universal duration or single cause for every episode. Read the review on human odor habituation and adaptation.

How are olfactory illusions different from smell disorders?
The terms below describe different kinds of smell changes. Whether an odor stimulus is present, and whether the change is mainly one of intensity or quality, are useful distinctions; they do not provide a diagnosis on their own.

| Experience | What it means |
|---|---|
| Olfactory illusion | A perceptual mismatch involving an odor stimulus—for example, a mixture that smells unlike its ingredients or a reduced response after repeated exposure. |
| Parosmia | A qualitative distortion in the perception of an odor when an odor object is present. |
| Phantosmia | Perception of an odor when there is no odor stimulus. |
| Anosmia | Complete loss of smell. Diagnosis has traditionally been confirmed with psychophysical smell testing rather than self-assessment alone. |
The clinical definitions of parosmia, phantosmia, and anosmia are described in the International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Olfaction. A systematic review also discusses reduced smell intensity and altered odor quality, and notes central causes of olfactory distortions, including epilepsy and migraine. Those associations are background information, not a way to diagnose the cause of an individual’s experience. The systematic review of distorted olfactory perception covers these findings.

What can you conclude from a misleading smell?
- A smell that changes in a mixture does not prove which individual odorant is present.
- A smell that fades from awareness does not prove that its concentration has fallen; perceived masking and odor fade are distinct concepts in NIST’s odor-masking workshop material.
- A distorted or absent smell is not enough to identify a disease or exposure level.
- There is no universal home test established here for distinguishing an olfactory illusion from a clinical smell disorder.
