“Microsoft developer sites” is a general term for Microsoft’s official online documentation and related resources for building with Microsoft technologies. It describes a group of destinations—not one standalone website—with Microsoft Learn as a broad documentation hub and product-specific resources for areas such as Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows, and Microsoft Cloud.

What the term means

Microsoft’s pages describe multiple portals and product areas serving developers; “Microsoft developer sites” is a convenient umbrella phrase, not a formal product name. Microsoft Learn’s technical documentation directory describes its role as a place to find in-depth articles about Microsoft developer tools and technologies, and organizes material by product.

Depending on the product, these official resources can include getting-started guides, tutorials, API references, SDKs and other tools, code samples, release information, training, publishing guidance, and community or support routes. The mix varies by destination.

Which Microsoft developer site should you use?

Start with the product you are building for or the task you need to complete. The product areas overlap, but each has a different center of gravity.

#1 Best Overall
Destination Best fit What you can find
Microsoft 365 developer resources Apps and extensions for Microsoft 365 products and services Resources for Teams, Office Add-ins, Microsoft Graph, SharePoint Framework, Power Apps, and Copilot extensibility, alongside tools, learning, and community material.
Azure developer documentation Building applications with Azure Guidance on Azure development, developer tools, SDKs, and language-oriented centers.
Windows app developer resources Building applications for Windows Platform capabilities, APIs, packaging, samples, tools, and support.
Microsoft Cloud documentation Working across Microsoft cloud product areas Documentation for integrating services across cloud areas.

How to navigate them

  1. Choose the product or platform. Start with Microsoft 365 for Teams, Office, Graph, or SharePoint work; Azure for cloud applications; Windows for Windows apps; or Microsoft Cloud when your work spans cloud product areas.
  2. Choose the task. Look for a getting-started guide or tutorial when beginning, an API reference or SDK when implementing, and samples or release information when you need working examples or version details.
  3. Use the relevant support route. Product-specific pages may provide community or support resources; choose the route attached to the technology you are using.

Microsoft developer sites and the Developer Program

The Microsoft 365 Developer Program is one program within this broader ecosystem; it is not another name for all Microsoft developer sites. Eligible members may be able to request an E5 developer sandbox after meeting applicable eligibility and provisioning requirements. Microsoft documents the sandbox and a production or enterprise subscription as separate subscriptions and environments. Joining or visiting developer pages does not mean that every user automatically receives a sandbox. See the Microsoft 365 Developer Program documentation for program details.
