Hidden file extensions are filename suffixes that File Explorer does not display for known file types. The extension remains part of the filename; Windows is only hiding it in the view. You can show extensions in File Explorer using a different setting in Windows 11 than in Windows 10.
What is a file extension?
A file extension is the suffix after the final period in a filename. In expenses.xlsx, for example, expenses is the name and xlsx is the extension. Extensions help identify a file type and the applications that can open it, and can affect the icon Windows displays. They do not prove that a file’s contents match its label. Microsoft explains common file name extensions in Windows.

What does it mean when file extensions are hidden?
When File Explorer hides extensions for known file types, it leaves the suffix in the filename but omits it from the displayed name. A file saved as expenses.xlsx may therefore appear as expenses. This is a display setting, not a change to the file itself.
Microsoft’s guidance documents how to change this setting, but does not establish why it is enabled on a particular device. The display preference also is not a security check: seeing an extension does not establish that a file is safe.

How to show file extensions in File Explorer
Windows 11
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View > Show > File name extensions.
Windows 10
- Open File Explorer and select View > Options > Change folder and search options.
- In the Folder Options window, select the View tab.
- Clear Hide extensions for known file types, then select OK.
These paths are documented in Microsoft’s File Explorer in Windows guidance and its file extension support article.
Showing extensions is not the same as showing hidden files
File extensions and hidden files are controlled separately. In Windows 11, File name extensions and Hidden items are distinct choices under View > Show. In Windows 10 Folder Options, Hide extensions for known file types is separate from Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Turning on extensions does not reveal hidden files or folders.

Does changing an extension convert a file?
No. Renaming a suffix changes the filename, not the file’s underlying format. Microsoft puts it plainly: “You can change a file name extension, but that won’t convert the file to another format or change anything else about it except the file name.” Use an appropriate application’s export or conversion feature when you need a different format; do not treat renaming .txt to .docx as conversion.
Windows 10 support context
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The extension setting still has its own File Explorer path described above; support status is separate from how the setting works.
