What Are GPU Interconnects, and Why Do They Matter for Multi-GPU AI?

GPU interconnects let accelerators exchange data, but bandwidth alone does not determine multi-GPU AI performance. Learn how links, switches, topology and workload patterns fit together.

A GPU interconnect is the link or fabric GPUs use to exchange data or access one another’s memory. In multi-GPU AI, that communication can determine how much time devices spend working together rather than computing: a fast, well-matched interconnect can reduce communication bottlenecks, but it cannot guarantee that adding GPUs will speed up a workload proportionally.

Why multi-GPU AI needs communication

Splitting a model or its data across GPUs creates work beyond the calculations themselves. Devices may need to exchange intermediate values, gradients, parameters, tokens, or collective results. Those transfers happen through the system’s communication paths, so a job can be limited by moving information even when its GPUs have compute capacity available.

The important starting point is the workload’s communication graph: which GPUs need to exchange data, how often, and in what pattern. A pairwise transfer, a collective reduction, and an all-to-all exchange put different demands on the system. Frequent small messages can make latency important; large transfers can put more pressure on bandwidth; and the available paths between particular GPU pairs can matter in either case.

What makes up a GPU interconnect

Links connect devices; switches build a fabric

A link is a connection along which data travels. NVIDIA describes NVLink as a direct GPU-to-GPU interconnect. NVSwitch connects multiple NVLinks to support all-to-all communication among GPUs in supported systems. They are distinct parts of a fabric, not interchangeable names for the same component. NVIDIA’s Fabric Manager documentation scopes its instructions to supported NVSwitch-based HGX and DGX systems; these capabilities should not be assumed to be available on every GPU or retrofittable to any server.

Local GPU fabric and cluster networking serve different scopes

GPU-to-GPU communication inside one server is often called intra-node communication. NVIDIA uses scale-up for connecting accelerators within a tightly coupled domain, and scale-out for networking separate systems across a data center. A multi-node training or inference job may rely on both: a local fabric for GPUs within each node and a network for traffic between nodes.

Software must use the paths the hardware provides

Having a fast physical connection is not enough on its own. NVIDIA’s CUDA programming guide says applications should select devices with hardware properties, CPU affinity, and peer connectivity in mind. It also points developers to higher-level communication libraries, including NCCL and NVSHMEM, for coordinated GPU communication and collectives such as reductions. The effective path therefore depends on system configuration and software support as well as the link specification.

How interconnect limits show up in AI workloads

Collectives in distributed model work

When GPUs cooperate on a computation, they may need to combine results or distribute updated values. Such collective communication can become a significant part of a job when it is frequent or when many devices must participate. Whether it constrains performance depends on the communication pattern, the implementation, and the system paths—not simply the number of GPUs.

All-to-all traffic in mixture-of-experts models

NVIDIA describes mixture-of-experts inference as dispatching tokens to experts that may reside on different GPUs, then gathering and reordering the results. That creates intensive all-to-all communication. It is a clear example of a workload that can expose fabric constraints, but it does not mean every AI model or inference workload is interconnect-bound.

Topology can make GPU placement matter

Not every GPU pair necessarily has the same path or communication cost. In a 2019 evaluation of specific NVIDIA servers and HPC platforms, researchers reported communication NUMA effects associated with NVLink topology, connectivity, and routing, as well as an issue related to PCIe chipset design. They found that GPU pair selection could affect communication efficiency and application performance. Those results illustrate why topology deserves attention; they are not a current benchmark for today’s products.

NVLink bandwidth figures—and what they do not tell you

NVIDIA’s current product specification page lists the following per-GPU NVLink bandwidth figures by generation. Its specifications are preliminary and subject to change; the page’s figures should be treated as vendor specifications, not as a universal measure of application performance.

Bandwidth is only one comparison point. A fair system comparison also needs the directionality and definition behind each quoted number, latency for the target traffic pattern, the topology and paths between relevant GPU pairs, and support for peer communication in the system’s software. No broad, directly comparable current cross-vendor statistic is established here, so these figures do not support a general vendor league table.

What an AMD example can—and cannot—show

A 2024 paper analyzed a particular four-physical-GPU AMD MI250X node, which contains eight GPU compute dies and uses Infinity Fabric. In that tested setup, the authors reported that direct peer-to-peer accesses and RCCL outperformed MPI-based approaches for communication latency and bandwidth. They also described different link counts and measured bandwidth tiers within the configuration.

This is evidence that communication method and topology matter on that particular node, not a general AMD-versus-NVIDIA verdict. Results from one GPU configuration and methodology should not be generalized to other systems or workloads.

How to assess an interconnect for your workload

When comparing multi-GPU systems, begin with the communication the application actually performs. Then check whether the hardware and software provide an efficient route for that traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the supported GPU and fabric. Identify the GPU generation, interconnect generation, and whether the platform uses direct links, switched connectivity, or both.
  • Read bandwidth definitions carefully. Establish whether a specification is per GPU or aggregate, and whether it is unidirectional or bidirectional. Do not compare headline figures without matching their definitions.
  • Consider latency and topology. Ask how the GPU pairs that communicate in your workload are connected, and whether they share paths or depend on host or PCIe routes.
  • Match the fabric to the communication pattern. Determine whether the job is dominated by pairwise exchanges, collectives, or all-to-all traffic, and whether it uses data, model, or expert parallelism.
  • Check software and peer-access support. Verify that the system configuration and communication libraries can use the intended paths.
  • Separate within-node from between-node needs. For a cluster, assess the local GPU fabric and the network connecting servers; one does not replace the other.

The practical question is not simply how much bandwidth a GPU interconnect advertises. It is whether the complete system can move the right data, along suitable paths, at the rate and latency the workload requires.
