Good alternatives to Adobe Acrobat Pro depend on whether you need to change a PDF’s contents, process scanned pages with OCR, or simply mark up and sign documents. Foxit PDF Editor is a broad paid option; Nitro is another paid choice; Mac users can start with Preview or consider PDF Expert; and PDFgear is worth checking for a free workflow. Before paying, test the exact features you need on a representative PDF.
Which PDF editor should you consider?
| What you need | Option to consider | Why it may fit | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full editing and OCR across common platforms | Foxit PDF Editor | Foxit lists editing, conversion, OCR, forms, comparison, and security features for Windows, macOS, and web. | Paid plans; confirm the specific feature and platform at checkout. |
| Editing, review, forms, and signing | Nitro PDF | PCWorld’s 2026 guide describes tools for editing, conversion, review and markup, form filling and signing, and security options. | PCWorld listed prices of $15 per user per month or $270 for a three-year license; verify current pricing and terms. |
| Basic markup and form filling on a Mac | Apple Preview | A free starting point for annotating PDFs and filling forms. | It is not a substitute for a full editor when you need advanced document editing or OCR. |
| PDF work across Apple devices | PDF Expert | PCWorld identifies it as a Mac choice with syncing across Mac, iPhone, and iPad. | Its lifetime license enables Mac-only use, according to PCWorld’s 2026 guide; check current plan details. |
| Try a no-cost option | PDFgear | A possible free option to evaluate for your workflow. | Its cited feature descriptions and testimonials are vendor-hosted, not independent validation. |
| Specific workflow or content needs | EaseUS, pdfFiller, or Canva | TechRadar’s guide identifies EaseUS for Windows and OCR, pdfFiller for browser-based collaboration, and Canva for PDF design. | Canva is stronger for design than document-management needs such as OCR and e-signature collection, according to TechRadar. |
These are use-case suggestions, not a universal ranking: the right choice turns on your device, the kind of edits you make, and whether you need OCR, signatures, collaboration, or a particular license model.

What counts as editing a PDF?
Changing existing content
Editing existing text or images means altering content already in the document. That is different from adding comments, highlighting passages, drawing, or placing a signature on top. If you need to revise a contract clause, replace an image, or correct text, verify that the candidate handles those changes in your file rather than assuming an annotation tool can do it.
Working with scans and OCR
A scanned PDF may be a collection of page images rather than searchable text. OCR converts recognized text in those images into searchable or editable text, but results depend on scan quality and layout. If you work with scans, test OCR on a typical document and inspect the output for recognition errors and formatting shifts.
#1 Best Overall
- EDIT text, images & designs in PDF documents. ORGANIZE PDFs. Convert PDFs to Word, Excel & ePub.
- READ and Comment PDFs – Intuitive reading modes & document commenting and mark up.
- CREATE, COMBINE, SCAN and COMPRESS PDFs
- FILL forms & Digitally Sign PDFs. PROTECT and Encrypt PDFs
- LIFETIME License for 1 Windows PC or Laptop. 5GB MobiDrive Cloud Storage Included.
Forms, signatures, and redaction
Form filling and signing are not the same as editing the form’s underlying fields. Likewise, drawing a black box over sensitive text is not necessarily secure redaction: the original text may remain in the file. For confidential documents, check the product’s current documentation and verify that its redaction feature removes the underlying content before sharing.

A one-time price and an annual subscription are not directly comparable without checking included upgrades, supported devices, and whether renewal is required for continued access to particular services. Compare the total cost over the period you expect to use the software.

How to choose without paying for features you do not need
- Write down the tasks. Separate content editing from annotation, OCR, form filling, signing, collaboration, and secure redaction.
- Check your devices. Confirm support for your operating system and whether you need browser or mobile access. For Apple-only work, Preview may be enough for basic tasks; PDF Expert is an option to evaluate when syncing matters.
- Match the license to your use. Compare recurring charges with one-time licensing, and check whether a stated price is per user, what term it covers, and which features or platforms it includes.
- Test a representative PDF. Use a copy of a typical document—not a sensitive original—to check text and image changes, OCR accuracy, form behavior, signatures, and export quality.
- Verify security-sensitive behavior. For redaction, confirm that text is removed rather than merely hidden, and review the product’s current documentation before sharing sensitive files.
Where should you start?
For a broad paid toolkit, compare Foxit PDF Editor and Nitro against the features you actually use. If you are on a Mac and need only markup or form filling, try Preview first; consider PDF Expert if its Apple-device syncing fits your workflow. Evaluate PDFgear as a possible free option, but confirm each needed capability yourself. For OCR on Windows, browser collaboration, or design-led PDFs, assess EaseUS, pdfFiller, or Canva respectively—and keep Canva’s design focus distinct from document-management features.
