A filter is a command that processes input and produces output. A pipe, written as |, connects commands by sending the left command’s standard output to the right command’s standard input. Together, they let you build a pipeline that passes data from one operation to the next.
What is a filter in the command line?
A filter is a command or program that consumes input, does something with it—such as selecting, transforming, or sorting it—and produces output. The term describes the command’s role in processing data; it does not mean every command behaves as a filter in every use.

For example, wc -l counts lines and writes a count as output. Commands used as filters can take input from a stream rather than being tied to a particular file, depending on how they are invoked. The pipe operator connects two commands. It routes the standard output of the command on its left into the standard input of the command on its right. A pipeline is one command or a chain of commands connected this way, with data flowing from left to right.

For example:
wc -l file.txt | sort -nHere, wc -l file.txt writes a line count, and sort -n receives that output and sorts it numerically. The pipe carries the output between the commands; wc and sort perform the work.

How are filters and pipes different?

A pipe connects streams; it does not convert incompatible data formats into compatible ones. For a pipeline to be useful, the receiving command must be able to make sense of the input it gets.
Does “pipes and filters” mean something else?
Yes. In software architecture, “pipes and filters” names a pattern in which processing components, called filters, are connected by data-carrying connectors, called pipes. The components process data and pass it along, much like commands in a shell pipeline, but this architecture pattern is not limited to command lines or the literal | character. What a pipe does not tell you
The basic definition explains how standard output is connected to standard input. By itself, it does not specify details such as buffering, process scheduling, exit-status rules, error-stream handling, or named pipes. Those details depend on the shell and operating system; consult the relevant platform documentation when you need them.
