They are not competing technologies: on a typical wired connection, Ethernet carries IP traffic across the local link, while IP and, when needed, TCP handle communication at higher layers.
What is Ethernet?
Ethernet is a set of standards for local-area networking (LAN), defined primarily by IEEE 802.3. It specifies how devices access a shared or point-to-point link and how data is transmitted over supported physical media. Those media include twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, and fiber. An Ethernet cable is one common way to connect a computer, router, or switch to a local network, but the exact cable and interface depend on the equipment and installation.

IEEE 802.3-2022 describes selected Ethernet speeds from 1 Mb/s to 400 Gb/s. That range describes speeds covered by the standard; it does not mean every Ethernet device, cable, or medium supports every speed. IEEE Standards Association: IEEE 802.3-2022

What does TCP/IP mean?
TCP/IP is the name commonly used for the Internet protocol suite, a layered set of protocols used to communicate between systems. The name comes from two important protocols in that suite:
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- IP (Internet Protocol) addresses and forwards datagrams between hosts and networks. IP provides a connectionless, best-effort service: by itself, it does not guarantee delivery, intact contents, or arrival order.
- TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) operates above IP when an application uses it. TCP provides applications with a reliable, in-order byte stream. It uses mechanisms such as sequence numbers, checksums, and retransmission to handle loss and errors.
TCP/IP is broader than just TCP and IP. Its layers include link, Internet, transport, and application protocols; applications can use transport protocols other than TCP. IETF RFC 1122 describes the suite’s layers and IP’s service, while IETF RFC 9293 is the current TCP specification cited here.
How Ethernet and TCP/IP work together
When an application sends data using TCP over a wired Ethernet network, each layer has a distinct job. TCP organizes the application data as a byte stream and divides it into segments. Those segments are carried in IP datagrams, which are then sent over the local Ethernet link. At the receiving end, the layers process the data in reverse order.

- Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
- UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- TCP provides the application’s reliable, ordered stream when the application uses TCP.
- IP carries datagrams toward their destination across one or more networks.
- Ethernet transmits the IP traffic across a local Ethernet link to the next device.
This is a simplified description of encapsulation: real networks may involve several links and intermediate routers, and not every application uses TCP. Ethernet is a local link technology, not the Internet itself; TCP/IP can travel over other link technologies too.
Ethernet vs. TCP/IP
| Aspect | Ethernet | TCP/IP |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A family of LAN standards, including IEEE 802.3. | A layered suite of networking protocols. |
| Main role | Defines local-link access and physical transmission. | IP addresses and forwards datagrams; TCP provides a reliable, ordered byte stream for applications that use it. |
| Typical scope | A local wired network link. | Communication across interconnected networks, including the Internet. |
| Relationship | Can carry IP traffic locally. | Can use Ethernet or another link technology to carry IP. |
Can TCP/IP work without Ethernet?
Yes. TCP/IP is not restricted to Ethernet. A link layer carries IP traffic over the local network technology in use; Ethernet is one option. IEEE 802.3 defines Ethernet specifically, while the Internet protocol suite is designed to operate across different link technologies.

A useful mental model
Think of Ethernet as the local road and transmission rules between nearby devices, IP as the addressing and forwarding system that moves datagrams between networks, and TCP as a service that tracks a byte stream and retransmits data when necessary. The analogy is limited: protocols define machine-readable formats and behavior, not literal roads or postal delivery.
