The sheet designation tells you the paper format; a complete drawing-sheet format also specifies layout features such as borders, the title block and usable drawing space. Use the standard and size required by the project, customer or organization—not a paper size chosen by dimensions alone.
What an engineering drawing size means
A drawing size identifies the physical sheet on which a technical drawing is prepared or reproduced. It is not necessarily the same as the area available for drawing: trimmed sheet dimensions, untrimmed paper dimensions and the usable area inside the layout are distinct.

That distinction matters when setting up a template or ordering plotting paper. A sheet that has the right outside dimensions does not, by itself, establish that the drawing follows the required sheet-format standard.

ISO 5457: ISO technical drawing sheets
ISO 5457:1999 specifies the size and layout of preprinted sheets for technical drawings in any engineering field, including computer-produced drawings, and applies to other technical documents as well. ISO says the 1999 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2026 and remains current; the standard also records Amendment 1:2010. Its layout subjects include the title block, borders and frame, centring marks, grid reference system, trimming marks and designation. The ISO 5457 preview is not the complete standard, so consult the full text and amendment when creating a controlled template.

ASME Y14.1: decimal-inch formats
ASME Y14.1-2020 defines decimal-inch sheet sizes and formats for engineering drawings. ASME describes standardization as supporting readability, handling, filing and reproduction, including reduced-size copies.
Metric formats are a separate part of the ASME Y14.1 family
Metric sheet sizes and formats are treated separately in ASME Y14.1M. The DLA ASSIST record describes the decimal-inch standard and distinguishes the metric standard. ASME’s Y14 standards listing identifies Y14.1-2012 as decimal-inch and Y14.1M-2012 as metric; those 2012 entries establish the distinction, not the latest edition. Verify the edition applicable to a project with ASME before specifying a controlled format.

Example: the ISO-A1 trimmed sheet
The ISO 5457 preview gives the trimmed A1 sheet size as 594 × 841 mm. That value describes the trimmed sheet, not the usable drawing area inside its frame and not a larger untrimmed sheet. The standard’s layout requirements govern how the sheet is arranged; do not infer compliant margins or drawing space from the outside dimensions alone.

How to choose a size and format
- Check the governing requirement. Follow the drawing standard and sheet designation named by the project, customer or organization. ISO-A and decimal-inch formats are not interchangeable by assumption.
- Allow enough usable space. Choose a sheet that can accommodate the required views, dimensions, notes and layout features clearly.
- Consider the drawing’s life beyond the screen. Account for legibility when reproduced, as well as handling and filing needs; standardization is intended in part to support these practical uses.
- Match paper to the specification and equipment. When buying plotting paper, confirm the required designation and dimensions, and check that the printer supports the sheet. Matching the paper size alone does not demonstrate compliance with the drawing-sheet standard.
- Use the full standard for controlled templates. The ISO preview is informative rather than complete, and the applicable ASME edition should be verified for the project.
