A dipolar molecule has a permanent separation of positive and negative charge, so it has a nonzero molecular dipole moment even though the molecule is neutral overall. Nearby dipoles exert electrostatic forces on one another: depending on how they are oriented, they can attract or repel. Molecular shape matters, too—polar bonds do not always produce a net dipole if their effects cancel.
What makes a molecule dipolar?
In a molecule, electrons are not always shared evenly. This can leave one region slightly negative and another slightly positive. These are partial charges, not separate full ions, and the molecule as a whole remains electrically neutral. A molecule with a permanent, nonzero separation of charge has a permanent electric dipole moment.

Bond polarity alone does not determine whether an entire molecule is dipolar. Each polar bond contributes a dipole with a direction, and the molecule’s geometry determines how those contributions combine. If the contributions cancel, the molecule has no net molecular dipole even though it contains polar bonds. Water is a familiar dipolar molecule; its bent shape means its bond contributions do not cancel. Georgia Tech explains the role of molecular structure in its overview of molecular interactions.
How do two permanent dipoles interact?
A permanent dipole creates an electric field. When two dipolar molecules approach, their partial charges exert electrostatic forces on one another. Opposite ends facing tend to attract; like ends facing tend to repel. The interaction is directional: its strength and whether a particular arrangement attracts or repels depend on the molecules’ separation and relative orientation. IUPAC describes this dependence in its definition of dipole–dipole interaction.

This is an intermolecular force, not a covalent bond. It is also not a single fixed attraction between every pair of dipolar molecules: molecules rotate, and different orientations produce different interactions.
Why the distance rule can be different
For two dipoles held in fixed orientations, the interaction energy varies inversely with the cube of their separation (1/r³). In a liquid, molecules rotate continually because of thermal motion. Averaging over these changing orientations gives a net attractive interaction with an inverse-sixth-power dependence (1/r⁶). The two distance rules describe different conditions, not a contradiction. Georgia Tech discusses both cases in its molecular-interactions material.

How dipole interactions relate to other intermolecular forces
Neighboring molecules can interact through several related but distinct electrostatic mechanisms. Distinguishing permanent, induced, and instantaneous dipoles helps explain what is happening:

|---|---|---|
| Dipole–dipole | Two molecules’ permanent dipoles | Orientation-dependent; a given arrangement can attract or repel. |
| Dipole-induced dipole | A permanent dipole distorts a nearby molecule’s electron cloud, inducing a dipole | The cited treatment describes this interaction as attractive. |
| London dispersion | Fluctuations in electron distributions create instantaneous dipoles | Occurs between all molecules, including nonpolar ones. |
These distinctions matter because not every attraction between molecules is a dipole–dipole interaction between two permanent dipoles. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning explains induced dipoles and dispersion in its discussion of deviations from ideal gas behaviour.

Where hydrogen bonding fits
Hydrogen bonding is a particularly strong, directional type of dipole–dipole attraction. It involves a polarized O–H or N–H bond and a neighboring electronegative atom. Despite its name, a hydrogen bond is an intermolecular force, not a covalent bond. OpenStax describes hydrogen bonding alongside other noncovalent interactions between molecules.

A dipole moment is a measure of charge separation. It is commonly reported in debye (D). Colorado State University lists water at 1.85 D; Georgia Tech gives comparison values of 1.85 D for water, 1.1 D for HCl, 1.9 D for CH₃Cl, 2.9 D for HCN, and 1.47 D for NH₃. These educational pages do not state publication years: see Colorado State’s key terms and Georgia Tech’s molecular-interactions overview.

Dipole moment can help explain intermolecular attraction, but it does not by itself determine a substance’s boiling point. Dispersion and hydrogen bonding also contribute. OpenStax illustrates the broader role of intermolecular forces by comparing normal boiling points of 188 K for HCl and 85 K for F₂; the chapter page does not state a publication year. The comparison is not a claim that dipole moment alone explains the difference. See OpenStax’s overview of intermolecular forces.
