What Are Cloud Scrapers and How Do They Work?

Cloud scrapers run web-page retrieval and extraction workflows on hosted infrastructure. Here is how requests, browser rendering, results, and responsible use fit together.

A cloud scraper is a hosted service that fetches web pages and extracts information for you. You send it a URL and an extraction task; the service retrieves the page, optionally renders it in a browser when JavaScript or interaction is needed, and returns a result such as HTML, structured fields, screenshots, or crawled content. You still choose what to collect, how often to run the job, and how to use the data.

What a cloud scraper does

Rather than running every part of a web-data collection workflow on your own computer or server, a cloud scraper runs some or all of it on hosted infrastructure. Depending on the service, you might make one request for one page, control a remote browser, or submit a crawl or batch job for later delivery.

The term covers different kinds of tools, not one fixed product design. Some endpoints return page source or selected elements; others can render JavaScript, interact with a page, extract structured fields, or collect content across multiple pages. The configured endpoint determines what the result contains.

How the request-to-data workflow works

  1. Choose a target and the data. Supply a URL or query and specify the information you need. Depending on the tool, you may provide selectors, a schema, or an extraction instruction.
  2. Fetch the page. The service makes a request to retrieve the target page. Some hosted APIs manage request routing or retries as part of their workflow; what they manage varies by provider.
  3. Render or interact if necessary. If the required content is added by JavaScript or appears only after a click, form entry, scroll, or wait, a browser-based workflow can execute scripts and perform those actions. If the needed data is already in the initial response, a simpler retrieval method may be sufficient.
  4. Extract and return the result. The service returns the configured output, which may be HTML, selected elements, structured data, a screenshot, or crawled page content.
  5. Use or store the data. Some tools return a result in the request response. Others support asynchronous jobs or callbacks for larger workloads.

Rendering and interaction can make more page behavior accessible, but they do not guarantee that every page will load or that extraction will succeed. You remain responsible for checking whether the returned data is complete and fits your use.

When a scraper needs a browser

Use simpler retrieval when the response contains the data

If the information you need is already present in the page response, a direct fetch and extraction may avoid the extra browser workflow. This is usually the less involved implementation, but whether it works depends on the target page.

Use browser rendering for dynamic pages

A headless browser can run page scripts and wait for content that does not exist in the initial response. Browser control also matters when the task requires an interaction such as clicking a button or filling in a form. A browser is not a universal workaround: the result still depends on the target page and the instructions you provide.

Cloudflare describes its service this way: “Browser Run, formerly known as Browser Rendering, enables developers to programmatically control and interact with headless browser instances running on Cloudflare’s global network.” This is Cloudflare’s description of its own service, not an independent comparison; its official documentation was last updated August 11, 2026. How to choose a cloud scraping approach

  • Page behavior: Determine whether the content is available in the initial response or requires JavaScript, cookies, waiting, or browser interaction.
  • Control: Decide whether a one-request extraction is enough or whether you need a programmable browser session.
  • Workload: Separate a one-off page request from a multi-page crawl or a large batch that may need asynchronous delivery.
  • Output: Check whether the endpoint returns raw or rendered HTML, selected content, structured fields, screenshots, or crawled pages.
  • Localization and integration: Confirm that the workflow can meet any region-specific requirements and connect to your automation framework and preferred result-delivery method.
  • Operations: Consider how much browser infrastructure and extraction logic your team wants to maintain. Vendor documentation describes different levels of managed functionality; it does not establish universal cost, speed, reliability, or success-rate advantages.

Official documentation illustrates the range: Cloudflare documents Quick Actions, browser sessions, structured extraction, and crawling; Oxylabs documents rendering, browser instructions, and API workflows; Scrappey describes scraping capabilities and intended use. These are examples of documented approaches, not independently tested or ranked alternatives. Cloudflare Browser Run, Cloudflare getting started, Oxylabs Web Scraper API, and Scrappey.

Authorization and responsible use

Before collecting data, confirm that you are authorized to access it and review the target site’s applicable terms and relevant law. Scrappey’s documentation describes its intended use as collection authorized by the content owner or otherwise permitted by applicable law. A cloud service’s ability to retrieve a page does not itself establish permission, and this overview is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Scrappey’s authorized-use information.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot rather than a data-extraction workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a cloud scraper the same as a web crawler?

Not necessarily. A scraper extracts selected information, while a crawler visits pages or follows links; some hosted services support both kinds of work.

Does using a cloud scraper mean I do not need to write extraction logic?

Not automatically. You still need to define the pages and fields you want and decide how to validate and use the results; the service’s API determines how much of that work it can handle.
