Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are tiny fluorescent carbon-based nanoparticles, generally described as less than 10 nanometers across. They emit light when an excited electronic state relaxes, and the light’s color depends on the energy difference between the states involved. Particle size can influence that energy, but surface chemistry, defects, molecular-like states, and measurement conditions also matter—so there is no universal rule that size alone determines a CQD’s color.
What carbon quantum dots are
CQDs are a family of carbon-based nanomaterials, not one chemically uniform substance. You et al.’s 2024 review describes them as typically smaller than 10 nm and discusses a common structural picture: a carbon-rich core, often with graphitic or mixed sp²/sp³ character, surrounded by a chemically functionalized surface. The precise structure varies with the starting materials, synthesis, and any later treatment. You et al., 2024

Researchers make carbon dots through two broad kinds of routes. Top-down methods break larger carbonaceous materials into smaller particles; bottom-up methods carbonize or polymerize smaller molecular precursors. The route and its conditions help shape both the core and surface, which can affect optical behavior.

When a CQD absorbs light, it enters an excited electronic state. As the system relaxes, it may release some energy as heat or through other non-radiative processes. If it instead releases energy as a photon, the emitted light’s wavelength corresponds to the energy difference between the states involved: higher-energy photons have shorter wavelengths, while lower-energy photons have longer wavelengths.

That emitting transition can involve the carbon core or conjugated regions, surface states, or molecular-like species associated with the particle. More than one pathway may contribute to a sample’s fluorescence, and the dominant pathway can differ from one CQD formulation to another. This is why the label “carbon quantum dot” does not imply a single structure or one settled explanation for every observed emission color. You et al., 2024; 2022 review indexed by PubMed
Why CQDs emit different colors
Core and conjugated-domain size
In some CQD systems, the size of a conjugated carbon domain affects its energy gap. Smaller domains can have wider gaps and emit shorter-wavelength light; larger domains can narrow the gap and shift emission toward longer wavelengths. Reviews describe examples of blue-to-red shifts with increasing particle size, but this is a reported trend in particular systems—not a dependable rule for every carbon dot. Particle diameter and the size of a conjugated domain are also not necessarily the same measurement. You et al., 2024

Surface groups, oxidation, and defects
Functional groups and defects at a dot’s surface can create electronic states that capture excited charges and contribute to emission. Oxidation changes the kinds and abundance of oxygen-containing surface groups, so changing oxidation or other surface chemistry can alter both emission color and intensity. A surface-mediated transition may be important even when the particle’s overall size is unchanged. You et al., 2024

Passivation changes the surface’s electronic environment and can reduce pathways that dissipate excitation without emitting light, often increasing fluorescence intensity. Its effect on color depends on the material and treatment; passivation does not guarantee a particular color shift.

Doping with nitrogen or other heteroatoms can alter energy levels or introduce different emissive states. The result depends on which atom is incorporated, how it bonds, and how the dot is synthesized. Even the 2024 review notes that some details of nitrogen-doping effects remain unclear. Excitation wavelength and surroundings
Some CQDs show excitation-dependent emission: changing the wavelength of the light used to excite them can change the observed emission. Others show excitation-independent emission across the range measured. Solvent, pH, surface groups, and other measurement conditions can also affect optical behavior. As a result, a reported color is most useful when accompanied by the excitation wavelength and measurement environment. You et al., 2024; 2023 review in Materials Today Advances

How to compare two CQD reports
Two samples can both be called carbon quantum dots and still have different emission colors or brightness. To understand a comparison, check whether the reports describe the same material and conditions:
- Particle size and, where available, conjugated-domain size.
- Core structure and degree of graphitization.
- Surface functional groups, oxidation, defects, and passivation.
- Heteroatom identity and bonding state.
- Precursors, synthesis route, and post-treatment.
- Excitation wavelength, emission peak, solvent, pH, and measurement conditions.
Without those details, a color difference cannot safely be attributed to particle size alone. The broader reviews likewise describe multiple possible photoluminescence mechanisms rather than one explanation that applies to every CQD formulation. Where carbon quantum dots are being studied
Reviews discuss CQDs in fluorescent sensing, biomedical imaging, lighting and displays, and photocatalysis. These are research and developing application areas; they do not establish that every CQD is safe for a particular use, clinically approved, or commercially mature. Suitability depends on the specific material and application. You et al., 2024; 2023 review in Materials Today Advances
