A blister figure is sealed to a printed backing card under a clear molded plastic bubble. A boxed figure sits in a carton, often behind a separate clear window. The distinction is packaging, not a built-in measure of a figure’s quality, rarity or value.
For collectors, the format changes what must be inspected and protected: carded figures require attention to the card and the bubble’s deepest point, while boxed figures require the complete outside dimensions of the carton, including the window, tabs and other projections.

Blister and boxed figures: the direct distinction
“Blister” refers to the transparent bubble itself. “Carded” describes the complete package made from the printed backing card and the sealed bubble. The figure, accessories and any inserts are held in the bubble, while the card carries artwork, branding, warnings and product information. In condition assessment, the card, blister and figure are treated as separate components, so damage to one does not automatically describe the condition of the others. CGA Grading’s additional grading information uses this component-by-component approach.
A boxed figure is enclosed by a carton. A window-box version has a separate clear plastic window in the carton so the contents can be viewed without opening the package. The box, window and figure are distinct parts for inspection and grading. A box can also be fully closed or use internal trays and artwork; “boxed” describes the carton format, not one universal construction.

A packaging supplier describes a bubble mounted on printed cardboard as the characteristic carded format and describes window boxes as offering greater structural protection and shelf presence. That is packaging-design guidance from the supplier, not an independently tested protection ranking. Kay Packaging’s action-figure box guide explains those design characteristics.
Why a collector may see both formats in one toy line
Collectors often encounter the same scale or fictional universe in both a carded release and a boxed release. The format can change because of the package design chosen for a particular assortment, the amount of accessories, the need for an internal tray, the desired shelf footprint or the way a product is merchandised. The available evidence describes the physical formats, but it does not document a universal manufacturer rule explaining why every specific character or wave uses one format.
Do not infer that a boxed release is a premium edition, or that a carded release is a lower-quality figure. A package can be selected for its artwork, hanging-card merchandising, window visibility or the space needed for extras. Those are design and retail decisions; they are not proof of differences in articulation, paint, materials, production quantity or resale demand.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to inspect a blister figure
Check the backing card
Lay the card flat and inspect the front, back and all four edges under even light. Look for creases, bends, tears, scuffs, edge wear, punctures, water damage and sticker residue. A card can remain attached to a bubble while still having a major crease or compression mark. Check whether printed colors have faded and whether the card has bowed from storage.
Check the blister
Examine the clear plastic for dents, scratches, clouding, yellowing, lifting, tears and crushed areas. Inspect the seal around the entire perimeter: a section that has lifted from the card can admit dust and moisture and may allow accessories to escape. A bubble can be clear and intact while the card behind it is damaged, so record the two conditions separately.
Check the contents without opening
Count visible accessories and compare their positions with the package artwork or a reliable release listing. Look for loose parts, displaced inserts, stress on thin accessories and signs that the figure has shifted inside the bubble. Do not press on the plastic to force a part back into place; pressure can create a permanent dent or break a seal.

How to inspect a boxed figure
Inspect the carton
Check every panel, corner and seam for creasing, bending, crushing, tears, scuffing, edge wear, punctures, water damage and sticker residue. A corner can be compressed even when the broad faces look clean. Examine the bottom and rear panels because handling marks and warehouse labels often occur away from the display side.

Look for scratches, dents, clouding, yellowing, tears and lifting where the window meets the carton. A window can be intact while the box around it is crushed, or it can be scratched while the printed carton remains sharp. Treat those as separate observations rather than describing the entire package with one word such as “mint.”
Check internal movement
Gently tilt a sealed box and listen for loose parts, but do not shake it. Excess movement can indicate a displaced tray or accessory. Compare the box’s weight and visible contents with the stated configuration when authenticity or completeness matters. Opening the carton changes its sealed status, so decide whether access is worth that trade-off before cutting tape or removing a window insert.
Condition language collectors should understand
Packaging condition is not interchangeable with figure condition. A figure may be factory-clean while its card or carton is creased; conversely, a sharp package can contain a figure with paint rub, a bent accessory or another manufacturing defect. The grading guidance from CGA lists packaging flaws such as dents, scratches, fading, yellowing, clouding, tearing, lifting and crushing for blisters and windows, and creasing, bending, tearing, scuffing, edge wear, punctures, water damage and sticker residue for cards and boxes. These are examples of features a grader may consider, not a universal numerical standard used by every seller or marketplace. See the component guidance from CGA Grading.
When buying remotely, ask for separate, well-lit photographs of the figure, card or carton, blister or window, all corners, the back panel and the seal. Ask whether a flaw is factory-made, shipping-related or caused by storage. “Sealed” only tells you that the package has not been opened; it does not guarantee an undamaged card, bubble, box or window.
Measuring a protector or display case
Measure a carded figure
- Measure the card’s maximum width and height, including any header tab or projecting edge.
- Measure from the card’s rear surface to the deepest point of the bubble, not merely to the card plane.
- Include bubbles that extend sideways or below the nominal card outline.
- Compare those measurements with the protector’s internal dimensions, leaving enough clearance to insert the package without rubbing.
Never flatten or compress a bubble to make a card fit. Pressure can crease the card, distort the plastic or break the seal. A protector sold for a particular toy line may still fail if a special release uses a wider card or a deeper bubble.

Measure a boxed figure
- Measure the maximum outside width, height and depth of the assembled carton.
- Include the window’s projection, top and bottom tabs, corner guards, flaps and any irregular edge.
- Use the largest measurement in each direction; do not rely on the nominal figure scale or the printed box dimensions.
- Check the case opening and internal clearance, not only the advertised external size.
A case guide for action figures separates protection intended for carded packages from protection intended for boxed collectibles and advises measuring the exact release. Display Armour’s action-figure display-case guide provides that measurement-focused approach.
Displaying and storing each format
Carded display
Carded packages are often hung or stood with the printed card facing forward. Support the card evenly so its top tab does not carry the entire load. Keep the bubble from touching a shelf edge or neighboring package, and use a fitted carded protector when dust, handling or accidental contact is a concern. Because the bubble is a prominent part of the package, a case that protects only the card but leaves the bubble exposed is not protecting the complete item.
Boxed display
Boxes usually stand on a broad base or shelf, but a window, flap or protruding tab can make the actual footprint larger than the carton’s main panel. Avoid stacking weight directly on a window or on a box with a projecting insert. Leave enough clearance to remove the package without dragging a corner across the shelf or case wall.

Environmental precautions
For either format, keep packages away from direct sunlight, high heat, damp areas and rapid temperature changes. Light can fade printed cards and box panels; heat and age can contribute to plastic yellowing or distortion; moisture can stain cardboard and weaken seals. Handle packages by rigid edges rather than pressing the bubble or window. Store heavier items below lighter ones so a collapse does not crush a card or carton.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does one format make a figure more valuable?
No general price premium for blister packaging or boxed packaging is established by the cited guidance. Value depends on the specific release, demand, completeness, authenticity, scarcity, figure condition and package condition. A collector who wants an unopened, display-ready item may care greatly about a clean card, bubble, box or window, while another collector may prioritize the figure and accessories and accept package wear.
Do not claim that opening any figure causes a fixed percentage loss. The financial effect varies by release and buyer, and the available sources do not publish a universal percentage. If you open a package, record the figure and accessories, retain the card or carton, and describe the item accurately when selling. If sealed-package condition is your priority, leave the package intact and protect it from the hazards listed above.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the format: card plus bubble, carton plus window, or a closed carton.
- Request photographs of every package surface, not only the front.
- Ask specifically about creases, dents, yellowing, clouding, lifting, tears, water damage and sticker residue.
- Confirm that all accessories and inserts are present and in their intended positions.
- Record the card or box dimensions and the deepest bubble or window projection before buying a protector.
- Check whether the seller’s condition terms describe the figure separately from its packaging.
- Plan shipping protection: rigid support for a card, corner protection for a carton and enough empty space that the package cannot slide into the outer box.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing a case by figure scale alone
Two figures of the same nominal scale can use different cards, bubbles or cartons. Measure the package, including projections, before ordering a case.

Calling a package “mint” after checking only the front
Back panels, lower edges, seals and corners often reveal damage hidden in a straight-on photograph. Inspect every component separately.
Assuming a window means the box is stronger
A window box may be designed for more structure or shelf presence, but that supplier description is not a universal protection test. Construction, shipping and storage determine the actual damage risk for a particular release.
Equating packaging with figure quality
The format does not tell you how well the figure is made, how rare it is or how it will perform in the market. Verify the exact release and assess the contents independently.
What “blister” and “boxed” mean in a listing
In a listing, “blister,” “carded” and “mint on card” generally point to a card-and-bubble package, while “boxed,” “window box” or “mint in box” point to a carton package. These labels are useful shorthand, but they are not a substitute for photographs and a written condition description. A listing should make clear whether the seller is describing an unopened package, a package with a damaged seal, or a loose figure that was removed from its original packaging.
The reader’s question about why some releases in one line arrive in boxes while others arrive on cards therefore has a simple answer at the format level: they use different packaging designs. To choose, protect or grade one correctly, identify every physical component and measure the package that actually exists rather than relying on the franchise, scale or a generic case label.
