An AI agent identity is a digital identity that lets an organization identify, authenticate, and govern an AI agent when it interacts with organizational resources. Managing one with the discipline used for Microsoft Entra identities helps administrators see which agents exist, who is accountable for them, what access they have, and how to review or revoke that access. It does not mean giving an agent the same permissions as an employee.
What an AI agent identity represents
An agent identity associates an AI agent with an identity that can be discovered, authenticated, and governed. Microsoft Entra Agent ID is Microsoft’s identity and security framework for agents. Its documentation describes assigning identities, discovering agents, and maintaining agent metadata. Microsoft Entra Agent ID documentation

That identity gives administrators a way to connect an agent to its purpose, accountable people, permissions, and activity. Without that visibility, an organization has a harder time determining which agents can reach its resources or responding when an agent is misused or compromised.

Why agent identities need governance
Unlike an employee, an agent may take actions or access resources without a person making each individual decision. That makes it important to know what the agent is allowed to do and who is responsible for its lifecycle. Microsoft identifies risks including misuse of inherited permissions and actions by compromised agents. Manage agent identities in your organization and Microsoft Entra security for AI overview

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Inventory: Administrators need to discover which agents operate in the environment and understand their roles.
- Accountability: A named person should own lifecycle and access decisions.
- Least-privilege access: Permissions should fit the agent’s task and authorization context, rather than simply inheriting an employee’s access.
- Review and response: Permission and sign-in visibility supports access reviews and action when an agent’s behavior or risk changes.
How agent identities differ from employee identities
Identity-governance practices can transfer from workforce identities to agents, but the identities are not interchangeable. An employee’s access is commonly tied to their job and role; an agent’s access should be tied to a defined task and the authorization context in which it acts.
| Governance area | Human Entra identity | AI agent identity |
|---|---|---|
| Accountability | Employee, typically with a manager | Accountable human sponsor; technical owner may handle administration |
| Purpose and scope | Access associated with the person’s role | Permissions scoped to the agent’s task and authorization context |
| Lifecycle | Creation, review, suspension, and departure processes | Creation, review, suspension, and retirement of the agent |
| Authorization | Access granted to the person | May involve delegated permissions or grants inherited from an agent identity blueprint |
| Monitoring and revocation | Review access and sign-in activity; disable access when needed | Review permissions and sign-in activity; block or disable authentication when needed |
Microsoft’s authorization documentation explains that agent identities can use delegated scopes and may inherit blueprint-level grants. Administrators therefore need to understand the effective permissions, not just the access assigned directly to an agent. Authorization for Microsoft Entra Agent ID

Who is responsible for an agent’s identity?
Microsoft’s guidance states: “Each agent identity should have an accountable human sponsor responsible for lifecycle and access decisions.” The sponsor is accountable for the agent’s purpose and lifecycle; a technical owner may take care of administrative work. What to manage across an agent’s lifecycle
Microsoft’s agent identity materials describe lifecycle management, access reviews, entitlement management, Conditional Access, identity status and ownership views, permissions, and sign-in logs. Together, these controls can support governance of the identity and the resources it can reach. Exact availability, prerequisites, and licensing may vary; the cited documentation does not establish that every feature is available in every tenant or SKU. - Establish identity and metadata: Make the agent discoverable and record what it does.
- Assign accountability: Name a human sponsor and clarify any technical owner’s responsibilities.
- Review effective access: Check direct grants, delegated scopes, and permissions inherited through a blueprint against the agent’s task.
- Monitor activity: Use available administrative views and sign-in logs to review identity status and activity.
- Plan suspension and retirement: Define how to block authentication or revoke access when the agent is no longer needed or needs investigation.
What “like Entra identities” means
Microsoft introduced Entra Agent ID in an announcement dated May 19, 2025, describing a goal of tracking agent identities, managing their lifecycle and permissions, and securing their access to organizational resources. That announcement is historical context; current capabilities and availability should be checked in Microsoft’s product documentation. “Like Entra identities” is a governance analogy: give agents discoverable identities, accountable sponsors, reviewed permissions, lifecycle controls, and a way to monitor and revoke access. It is not a reason to treat an agent as a person or grant it a person’s privileges.
