Adaptive beam headlights—also called adaptive driving beam (ADB) headlights—reshape parts of a vehicle’s high-beam pattern to reduce light aimed at other traffic while keeping stronger illumination elsewhere on the road. They do more than switch between high and low beams, and they are different from headlights that pivot into a curve.
How adaptive beam headlights work
An ADB system adjusts the high-beam pattern as it detects other vehicles. It creates a lower-intensity area, or “shadow,” around traffic while preserving stronger light in unoccupied areas. The aim is to provide more forward visibility without directing as much high-beam light toward drivers ahead or approaching from the opposite direction.

The system changes portions of the beam rather than turning the entire high beam off. The exact operation and driver controls depend on the vehicle, so consult its owner’s manual for operating details.

“Adaptive headlights” is sometimes used loosely. It is useful to distinguish three different functions:
#1 Best Overall
- offers breakthrough improvement in visibility and safety
- includes dot and ece dual-compliant headlight
- features dual burn high and low beam optics for extra punch of light
- plug and play solution for 5.75″ round (also known as par46) motorcycle headlight buckets
- utilizes high beam optics and adaptive technology to produce a superior beam pattern
| Headlight feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Adaptive driving beam (ADB) | Dynamically modifies parts of the high-beam pattern to reduce light aimed at detected traffic while maintaining stronger illumination elsewhere. |
| High-beam assist or automatic high beams | Switches between high and low beams according to traffic or lighting conditions; it does not create the same partial shadow in the beam. |
| Curve-adaptive headlights | Pivots the beam toward the direction of travel to illuminate a bend, sometimes using steering and speed inputs. |
These features address different visibility problems. A vehicle may have one or more of them, so check the specific feature description rather than relying on a general “adaptive headlights” label.
What U.S. regulations allow
In 2022, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) amended Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 to permit certification of ADB headlamps and set performance requirements. In 2024, NHTSA denied petitions asking it to reconsider that rule. The rule permits ADB systems that meet the requirements; it does not mean every vehicle has the feature or that every system behaves identically. NHTSA’s 2022 final rule and its 2024 response describe the regulatory actions.

- Offers rugged durability with heavy-duty, die-cast aluminum housing and state-of-the-art LEDs
- Patent pending design Offers a one-of-a-kind look
- Engineered to be dual-compliant (DOT And ECE) fixed headlight, making it 100% street legal anywhere in the world
- Complies with: buy America standards, ECE reg 113, ECE reg 50, FMVSS 108 table Xx, IEC IP67, tested to ECE reg. 10 (radiated emissions only)
NHTSA summarizes the function as directing less light toward occupied road areas and more toward unoccupied areas. Its announcement of the rule explains the change.
What is known about glare and safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that glare from a vehicle with ADB was significantly lower in its comparison than glare from an SUV with HID low beams and a sedan with curve-adaptive HID low beams. That is a comparative finding, not proof that every ADB system eliminates glare in every situation. Road layout, detection, system design, and operating conditions still matter. IIHS’s headlight overview discusses the comparison and related evidence.

Some figures on that IIHS page concern curve-adaptive lighting, not ADB. In an experimental study, drivers using curve-adaptive HID headlights spotted a difficult-to-see object on a dark, curvy road about one-third of a second earlier than with conventional fixed headlights. A separate study of model-year 2010 Mazda 3 vehicles found nighttime collision and property-damage-liability claim rates 10% and 15% lower, respectively, for vehicles with curve-adaptive HID lighting than for those with standard halogen lamps; daytime claims were unaffected. Those findings cannot be presented as ADB results, and IIHS notes that the effect of curve adaptivity can be difficult to separate from the effect of HID or LED lamps.

ADB had been available in Europe for more than a decade before U.S. rules changed. IIHS’s page, updated in July 2026, says only a few manufacturers then offered ADB in the United States and notes that U.S. requirements include functional restrictions that may limit effectiveness. Availability can change, so verify the exact model year, trim, and country with the manufacturer or vehicle documentation.

When checking a vehicle, confirm that its feature is ADB rather than automatic high-beam switching or curve-adaptive lighting. Also review how the system operates, what driver overrides are available, and any stated limitations. A generic replacement bulb or retrofit kit should not be assumed to add ADB capability; compatibility and system requirements are vehicle-specific.
