What Apps Do Koreans Use Most? A Guide to Korea’s Top Services

KakaoTalk and YouTube lead different measures of app use in South Korea. Here’s how survey results, active-user estimates and time spent compare.

KakaoTalk is South Korea’s default-scale messaging service, while YouTube reaches a similarly broad share of adults. Beyond those two, the answer depends on whether you mean survey-reported use, monthly active users or time spent—and on what people want to do. The figures below are dated snapshots, not a definitive ranking for October 2026.

What apps do Koreans use most?

There is no single, universal ranking in the available evidence: a survey asking adults which social services they use measures something different from an app tracker estimating monthly active users (MAUs), and neither is the same as time spent. Keeping those measures separate gives a more useful picture.

Measure and source Leading results What the figures mean
Survey-reported social-service use, Korea Press Foundation, October–November 2024; 3,000 South Korean adults KakaoTalk 98.9%; YouTube 84.9%; Instagram 38.6%; Naver Band 28.6%; Naver Blog 21.7% Share of surveyed adults reporting use—not app MAUs. Korea Press Foundation.
App MAUs, IGAWorks data for December 2024, as reported in 2025 YouTube 46.82 million; KakaoTalk 45.5 million; Naver 43.77 million; Google 37.59 million; Coupang 32 million A broad app comparison that includes video, messaging, search and shopping. IGAWorks.
Social-service MAUs, Wiseapp Retail, August 2025 KakaoTalk 48.19 million; Instagram 27.41 million; Naver Band 17.08 million; Naver Cafe 9.3 million Estimated active audience within the tracker’s social-service comparison. Wiseapp Retail.
Average monthly time per user, Wiseapp Retail, August 2025 TikTok Lite 18 hours 57 minutes; Instagram 18 hours 1 minute; TikTok 17 hours 41 minutes; X 14 hours 58 minutes; KakaoTalk 11 hours 25 minutes Engagement time, not audience size. A service can lead in time per user without having the largest MAU total. Wiseapp Retail.

The different totals for KakaoTalk across trackers are not necessarily contradictory: the figures come from different sources, periods and measurement approaches. They should not be merged into one leaderboard.

What do people use the leading services for?

KakaoTalk: everyday messaging

KakaoTalk is the clearest answer if the question is which service functions as Korea’s mainstream messenger. In the Korea Press Foundation’s adult survey, nearly all respondents reported using it. The Ministry of Science and ICT’s summary of the 2024 Internet Usage Survey also identifies KakaoTalk as the most widely used instant-messaging service. That government survey covered 25,509 households and 60,229 people aged three and older nationwide; it describes internet-use patterns, not a complete app-by-app leaderboard. Ministry of Science and ICT summary.

YouTube: broad video reach

YouTube ranked second in the Foundation’s survey of adults’ social-service use, and IGAWorks’ December 2024 app figures put it just ahead of KakaoTalk in MAUs. The Foundation’s report describes YouTube and other video services as popular for content from influencers and celebrities. Its survey percentage and IGAWorks’ MAU count answer different questions, so the apparent ranking depends on the metric.

Instagram and community services: use varies by age

Instagram ranked third among respondents in their 20s, 30s and 40s in the Foundation survey, while Naver Band ranked third among those in their 50s and 60s. The report describes Instagram and Facebook as services people mainly use to communicate with acquaintances. Wiseapp Retail’s August 2025 estimates also show Instagram with a larger social-service MAU total than Naver Band, while Naver Cafe appears in the same comparison as another substantial community service.

Naver and Coupang: beyond social networking

A list limited to messaging and social networks misses important everyday app categories. In IGAWorks’ December 2024 figures, Naver and Google ranked among the largest apps by MAUs, alongside YouTube and KakaoTalk; Coupang’s 32 million MAUs put shopping in the picture too. Naver’s wider service ecosystem includes search and community destinations, while Coupang represents commerce. These are app totals from the cited tracker, not survey percentages or proof that every user relies on each service in the same way.

Is KakaoTalk more popular than Instagram in Korea?

By the measures cited here, KakaoTalk has the broader reach: it was used by 98.9% of surveyed adults in the Korea Press Foundation’s late-2024 survey, and Wiseapp Retail estimated 48.19 million social-service MAUs for August 2025. Instagram remains a major service, especially among adults in their 20s through 40s in the Foundation survey; Wiseapp estimated its August 2025 social-service MAUs at 27.41 million. Those numbers are not a like-for-like contest: one is a survey use rate and the other is a tracker’s audience estimate.

Why does the “most popular app” depend on the metric?

  • Survey use rate asks what people say they use within a defined sample. The Foundation’s percentages describe 3,000 adults surveyed in October and November 2024.
  • Monthly active users estimates how many people used an app during a month, according to a tracker’s methodology. IGAWorks’ figures refer to December 2024; Wiseapp Retail’s social comparison refers to August 2025.
  • Time spent measures engagement among users, not how many users an app has. In Wiseapp Retail’s August 2025 comparison, TikTok Lite led average monthly usage time per user even though KakaoTalk led the cited social-service MAUs.

Scope matters as well. The Ministry of Science and ICT’s nationwide internet-use survey is useful context for messaging and video habits, but it does not provide the same thing as a commercial tracker’s brand-by-brand app totals. Kakao Corp.’s May 2025 investor presentation calls KakaoTalk Korea’s No. 1 messenger and says its 2024 app comparison used Android and iOS app-user data from January through November, with a separate data note for X. That is a company-authored claim, rather than independent measurement. Kakao Corp. May 2025 investor presentation.

How current are these rankings?

The figures above are the latest comparable snapshots established here, spanning late 2024 through August 2025; they should not be presented as a live October 2026 ranking. NIA’s index lists the 2025 Internet Usage Survey final report and English tables as posted in 2026, including an English listing dated June 25, 2026, but the index itself does not expose app-specific tables for a fresh cross-category ranking.
