Switching from gesture navigation to Android’s 3-button navigation gives you fixed Home, Back and Recents controls. That can make navigation easier to target, and on some phones it offers handy shortcuts—but not every shortcut works on every device. Here’s what changes, how to turn the buttons on, and what to check before switching.
What changes when you turn on Android’s navigation buttons?
Android provides two navigation modes: gesture navigation and 3-button navigation. In 3-button mode, Home returns to the Home screen, Back moves to the previous screen, and Recents (also called Overview) shows open apps. With gestures, those controls are performed using swipes instead of persistent buttons. Google’s navigation guide explains both modes and notes that settings can vary by device.

How to switch to 3-button navigation
- On a Pixel phone, open Settings > System > Navigation mode.
- Select 3-button navigation.
On other Android phones, the setting may be in a manufacturer-specific menu or use a different label. If you can’t find it under System or Gestures, Google recommends checking with your device manufacturer rather than assuming one menu path works on every model.

Four things the buttons may let you do
1. Move between recent apps
Tap Recents or Overview to see open apps, then swipe through the list and select one. That is the general 3-button method Google documents. The author of the September 23, 2026 Skeptic Society Magazine story also reports that double-tapping the square Recents button switched between two apps on their phone. Treat that as a device-specific experience, not a shortcut Google promises for all Android phones.

2. Open Circle to Search from Home
On select supported Android phone models, you can launch Circle to Search by long-pressing Home in 3-button mode. In gesture mode, the equivalent is a long-press on the navigation handle. Once it opens, select text or an image on screen to search. Google’s Circle to Search help page notes that the feature is not available on every phone and may not work in some confidential apps; eligibility can depend on the device and its functions.
3. Use a fixed Back control
Three-button navigation keeps Back as a visible touch target, instead of relying on an edge swipe. The source story’s writer found tapping a fixed button more predictable than swiping from the edge. That is a personal usability judgment, not a measured result or a guarantee that buttons will feel better to everyone.

4. Dismiss the keyboard with Back
The source author reports that, on their phone, Back changes to a down-arrow control while the keyboard is open; tapping it dismisses the keyboard. Google’s general navigation guide does not promise that exact appearance or behavior across Android devices. Whether you see it can depend on your phone and keyboard.

The right choice depends on which controls are easier for you to use and whether the extra screen space matters. You can try 3-button navigation and switch back if its layout or device-specific behavior does not suit you.
