Android is an operating system and software platform used on phones, tablets, watches, cars, televisions, and other devices. It manages device resources and gives apps the services and interfaces they need to work. The Android label does not mean every device has the same hardware, apps, Google services, features, or software updates.
What Android means—and what it does not
Android is the software platform between a device’s hardware and its apps. It coordinates resources such as the camera, network connections, and display, and provides interfaces that apps use to access them. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) makes Android source code publicly available and modifiable, so device makers and developers can build, adapt, and port it.

AOSP is not automatically a complete retail-device experience. Its source code does not include every end-user app or backend service a particular device may need. Google Mobile Services (GMS), a separate collection of Google apps and APIs, may be pre-installed on a device, but the Android name alone does not guarantee Google apps or the Play Store. How Android works, from apps to hardware
Android uses a layered design. An app requests platform functions through APIs; the operating system routes those requests through software components to the device hardware. The broad structure is:
- Apps and APIs: Apps use public Android APIs to request functions such as displaying content or accessing device capabilities. Some manufacturer or privileged system apps may have access to additional system APIs.
- Framework and system services: The Android framework provides app-facing classes and functionality. System services connect those functions to shared resources, device components, and other parts of the platform.
- Android Runtime (ART): ART provides the runtime environment that executes app code on the device.
- Hardware abstraction layer (HAL): Standard interfaces let hardware vendors implement device-specific functions while allowing higher layers to work through consistent interfaces.
- Native components and Linux kernel: Native libraries and system components work with the kernel, which forms the operating-system core and communicates with the hardware.
This architecture helps Android run across devices with different components and designs. It does not make their implementations identical: manufacturers can use different hardware and software, and a feature still depends on whether it is supported and enabled on a given device. What Android devices and features can do
Android runs on more than smartphones. Its supported form factors include tablets, watches, cars, and televisions, with each type shaped around different hardware and uses. An Android phone may provide telephony, a camera, location, Bluetooth, and mobile or Wi-Fi networking; another Android device may have only some of those capabilities. Apps and services also depend on the device’s implementation and configuration.

Android security: protections, not guarantees
Android’s security architecture includes protections such as the Linux kernel, app sandboxing, app signing, secure interprocess communication, and permissions that govern access to device resources. Together, these controls help separate apps and limit access to sensitive functions.
Platform protections do not prove that every app is safe or that a device cannot be compromised. App behavior, device implementation, and the software installed on a particular device all matter. The Android security overview describes the platform mechanisms.

Why Android devices differ
Android’s breadth is a strength, but the experience is not uniform. Devices can differ in hardware, manufacturer software, pre-installed services, supported functions, and the timing of software updates. Compatibility requirements help define a common baseline for implementations claiming compatibility; they do not make all devices the same or establish an update schedule for a particular model.
The Android 16 Compatibility Definition sets requirements for implementations that claim Android 16 compatibility, including requirements by device type and core requirements. Its surfaced page is dated December 2, 2025. That version-specific document is a technical standard, not evidence that a particular phone has Android 16 or will receive a future update. Check the device maker’s information for model-specific software support. The Android 16 Compatibility Definition sets out the requirements.
