An under-display camera (UDC) places the image sensor beneath a specially engineered, light-transmitting section of the screen. The design removes a conventional camera opening from that part of the display, but it does not remove the display from the camera’s optical path. Pixel layout, light transmission and image processing therefore determine both how continuous the screen looks and how clear the camera output can be.
For iPhone Duo, Apple identifies the under-display unit as a FaceTime camera capable of 1080p video. Apple separately lists a 12MP Center Stage front camera and a rear-camera selfie mode that uses the outer display as a preview. Apple has not published the UDC’s megapixel count, comparative still-photo tests or a measured result for inner-screen uniformity, so the available evidence supports a careful explanation rather than a claim that iPhone selfies are either poor or identical to those from a conventional camera.

What an under-display camera actually changes
With a conventional phone camera, the display stops around a notch, punch-hole or bezel opening so that unobstructed light reaches the lens. A UDC instead puts the lens and sensor below the panel. A selected area of the display is made more transparent than the rest, allowing light to pass through while the screen continues showing an image.

- The screen must transmit more light locally. A normal OLED panel is designed to block outside light while its pixels emit light toward the viewer. A UDC area needs the opposite property as well: it must admit enough light from the subject to the camera.
- The camera looks through display material. Pixel electrodes, organic layers and other structures can absorb, scatter or diffract incoming light before it reaches the sensor. Software can correct some of the resulting artifacts, but it cannot make the display layer optically disappear.
The result is a screen that can look uninterrupted during ordinary use, with a camera that may have different optical limits from a camera above or outside the panel. “Under-display” describes the physical location; it does not guarantee an invisible camera area or a particular level of photo quality.
Why screen quality can differ over the camera area
Lower local pixel density
One documented way to increase transmission is to reduce the number of display pixels over the lens. Samsung says its Galaxy Z Fold4 explanation uses one fifth of the standard display pixel density above the camera to create a semi-transparent region. Fewer pixel structures leave more open area for light, but the local image-forming grid is no longer identical to the surrounding screen.
That Samsung figure applies to the Galaxy Z Fold4, not to iPhone Duo. Apple has not stated the pixel density or layout of its UDC region in the product information cited here. It is therefore reasonable to explain the general trade-off without assigning Samsung’s number to an iPhone.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Possible patterns or brightness differences
Samsung’s separate Fold4/Fold5 support guidance says the different light permeability can reveal a cross-hatch pattern on a bright screen or when the display is off. That is a device-specific observation. It demonstrates what a local transparent OLED structure can look like, but it is not evidence that iPhone Duo has a visible grid, hatch or other mark.
On iPhone Duo, no Apple-published measurement establishes whether the under-display section has a detectable difference in brightness, color, sharpness or reflectivity. In practical terms, a buyer should expect the possibility of a local optical compromise as a design consequence, while recognizing that the size and visibility of that compromise remain unreported.

General OLED behavior is a separate issue
Apple’s support information for Super Retina and Super Retina XDR displays describes normal OLED characteristics, including viewing-angle color shifts and the possibility of image persistence or burn-in after extreme, prolonged display of static content. Those statements apply to OLED displays generally. They do not establish a special defect at the iPhone Duo camera area, nor do they measure UDC uniformity.
How the display layer can affect the image
A 2021 technical paper on UDC image restoration describes a semi-transparent OLED pixel array as attenuating and diffracting incident light. In plain language, the panel can make the incoming image dimmer and can spread fine detail or introduce patterns before capture. This is a mechanism-level explanation, not an independent test of iPhone Duo.

Samsung gives a concrete product example. Its Fold4/Fold5 support page describes the UDC as physically obstructed by the display and says it can be slightly lower quality than the cover-screen camera. The page lists a 4MP sensor, an f/1.8 aperture and fixed focus for those Fold models. Samsung also says algorithms and artificial intelligence compensate for potential image-quality limits and recommends the cover-screen camera when a slightly clearer image or video is needed.
None of those 4MP, f/1.8 or fixed-focus specifications should be transferred to iPhone Duo. Apple has not published equivalent UDC specifications in the material available for this article. They are useful only as an illustration of the kinds of compromises manufacturers may document.

| Camera path | What Apple states | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Under-display FaceTime camera | 1080p video | Designed and documented primarily for FaceTime video capture; Apple does not state its megapixel count or still-photo performance. |
| Center Stage front camera | 12MP | A separate front-facing camera listed independently from the under-display FaceTime unit. |
| Rear-camera selfie mode | Rear cameras can take a selfie while the outer display shows a preview | Lets you frame yourself with the rear camera system rather than the under-display or front camera. |
The wording matters. The under-display unit should be described as an 1080p FaceTime video camera based on Apple’s published specification. It should not be called the only selfie camera, and its resolution should not be guessed from Samsung’s products.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Apple also describes the rear-camera workflow as a selfie option with an outer-screen preview. That arrangement can provide a different capture path from an inner-screen video call, but Apple’s cited material does not provide a comparative test showing how much better or worse one mode looks in a particular lighting condition.
Are selfies worse with an under-display camera?
There is no published iPhone Duo comparison in the available Apple material that answers that question with a measured still-photo result. The safe conclusion is narrower: a camera behind a display has an additional optical layer, so it has a plausible source of reduced contrast, detail or flare; Apple has not disclosed enough information to quantify that effect for iPhone Duo.
Apple’s camera list gives users alternatives. For a front-facing camera, the separately listed 12MP Center Stage unit is distinct from the 1080p under-display FaceTime camera. For a selfie in which image quality is the priority and you can use the phone’s outer screen as a monitor, Apple says the rear cameras can be used with that preview. Those are documented choices, not proof that every UDC selfie is inferior.
Video calls also differ from still photography. A 1080p specification tells you the maximum stated video format; it does not reveal sensor size, lens quality, noise performance, autofocus behavior or still-image resolution. A camera can produce acceptable video while offering fewer details in a still photo, or it can use processing that masks some optical loss in motion. Apple has not supplied the measurements needed to draw a stronger conclusion.

Which camera should you use on iPhone Duo?
For an inner-screen FaceTime call
Use the under-display FaceTime camera when you want to look at the inner screen while the call is in progress. Apple specifically identifies this camera for 1080p video. Keep the lens area clean and use even lighting, because any camera looking through a display has less optical margin than one with an unobstructed path.
For a conventional front-facing selfie
Select the separately listed 12MP Center Stage front camera when the app offers that camera choice. It is a different camera from the under-display FaceTime unit in Apple’s product description. The published information does not establish a universal quality ranking, but it does establish that you are not limited to the UDC for front-facing images.
For the clearest preview and rear-camera capture
Use the rear-camera selfie mode when you can hold the phone so the outer display faces you. Apple says the outer screen provides a preview, allowing the rear cameras to frame the shot. This is the most direct documented alternative if you want to avoid capturing through the inner display.
- Open the camera experience that supports the rear-camera selfie function.
- Switch to the rear cameras and position the phone with the outer display toward you.
- Use the outer-screen preview to compose your face and background.
- Take the photo or start recording once framing and lighting are satisfactory.
The exact control names can vary by Apple’s final software interface. The hardware capability, rather than a particular button label, is what Apple’s product information establishes.
Do not confuse the UDC with Face ID sensors
Face ID uses a TrueDepth system that captures infrared imagery and depth information. Apple’s Face ID support page discusses that sensing system and additional image data on iPhone 18 Pro models or later. Those sensors are not the same thing as the under-display FaceTime camera described for iPhone Duo.

A UDC is an ordinary visible-light camera placed beneath the display for video or photos. Face ID’s infrared projector, camera and depth processing serve authentication and related functions. A statement about TrueDepth data cannot be used to infer the UDC’s megapixel count, low-light behavior or screen transparency.
What is known, and what remains unverified
| Question | Established information | Not established in Apple’s cited material |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a camera beneath the display? | Apple identifies an under-display FaceTime camera on iPhone Duo. | The exact transparent-area construction and its measured visibility. |
| What video format does it support? | 1080p video. | Frame-rate options, bitrate, sensor size and low-light measurements. |
| How many megapixels does the UDC have? | No count is stated. | Any megapixel figure; do not borrow Samsung’s 4MP specification. |
| How good are UDC still photos? | No comparative still-photo test is provided. | Detail, noise, dynamic range, focus behavior and ranking against the other cameras. |
| Is the screen area visibly different? | No Apple measurement is provided. | Pixel density, brightness uniformity, color shift, cross-hatch visibility or reflectivity over the camera. |
This distinction prevents two common errors: assuming a camera under the screen must produce bad selfies, and assuming an uninterrupted-looking screen proves that the display has no local compromise.
How to evaluate an under-display camera when comparing phones
If you are comparing actual devices rather than relying on a feature name, use the same checks for each model:
Recommended Free Tools
- Display continuity: inspect a white page, a dark screen and an image with fine lines at normal viewing distance and close range. Look for any camera-area pattern, brightness change or color difference.
- Published camera details: record resolution, focus type, aperture and supported video modes separately for the UDC and any cover, front or rear alternatives.
- Still and video samples: compare daylight, indoor light and low light. Check facial detail, skin tones, flare, haze, motion blur and focus consistency rather than judging one sample.
- Call usability: test eye-line, framing and exposure during a real video call. A camera that is adequate for a call may not be the best choice for a still selfie.
- Alternative cameras: determine whether a separate front or cover-screen camera, or a rear-camera preview mode, gives you a clearer option.
- Manufacturer intent: read whether the maker positions the UDC for calls, casual selfies or general photography. Intended use helps interpret a specification such as 1080p.
For iPhone Duo specifically, independent comparative tests would be needed to fill the gaps Apple has not addressed. Until those tests are available, Samsung’s Fold figures should remain examples from Samsung devices, not predictions about iPhone performance.
Availability and buying context
Apple’s September 2026 Newsroom announcement gives October 23, 2026 as the iPhone Duo availability date. That date is after October 13, 2026, the reference date for the information used here. Confirm regional sales status and the final product listing before treating the phone as available to buy.
Because the UDC’s still-photo performance and screen-area uniformity are not published, prospective buyers who care about selfies should prioritize a hands-on check or a reputable independent test after release. If your main use is video calling, the documented 1080p specification and the presence of separate camera options are more relevant than an assumed megapixel count.
Bottom line on iPhone screen quality and selfies
An under-display camera can make a phone’s screen look more continuous by moving the opening beneath the panel, but the transparent display region remains part of the camera’s optical system. Samsung’s Fold devices show that manufacturers may trade local pixel density and possible pattern visibility for light transmission, and technical research explains why attenuation and diffraction can affect image quality. Those observations establish the engineering trade-off, not the result on iPhone Duo.
Apple says iPhone Duo’s under-display FaceTime camera records 1080p video, while a separate 12MP Center Stage camera and a rear-camera selfie mode provide other capture paths. Apple has not published the UDC’s megapixels, comparative still images or measured inner-display impact. The most accurate expectation is therefore a visually streamlined screen with an under-display video camera, plus alternatives when you want a different selfie workflow—not a guarantee of invisible hardware or inferior photos.
