What an NPU Does in a Windows PC—and How It Differs From a CPU or GPU

An NPU accelerates supported AI inference, but it does not replace the CPU or GPU. Learn how Windows chooses where AI workloads run and what Copilot+ requirements mean.

An NPU, or neural processing unit, is a specialized processor for running supported AI workloads—especially inference—on a Windows PC. It works alongside the CPU and GPU, not in place of them. Whether a particular feature uses the NPU depends on its software support, Windows version, drivers, model and runtime.

What does an NPU do?

An NPU accelerates certain neural-network computations used by AI features. In Windows, it is a hardware resource that compatible software can target through supported APIs and execution providers. It is designed for efficient, sustained on-device inference, but that design goal does not guarantee a speed or battery-life improvement in every app or on every PC.

Think of the CPU as a flexible coordinator, the GPU as a broad parallel-work engine and the NPU as a specialist for certain AI calculations. That is an analogy, not a fixed division of labor: an app may partition work or route it differently, and Windows does not send every AI operation to the NPU.

How do an NPU, CPU and GPU differ?

Microsoft’s Windows ML guidance describes typical roles, not a universal performance ranking. Which processor an application uses depends on the device and software support.

Processor Typical role in Windows AI Practical limitation
CPU General-purpose computing and a broad fallback for inference. Not every model or workload is optimized for CPU execution.
GPU High-throughput parallel work, including image and video workloads. Whether an app uses it depends on runtime support and the GPU’s capabilities.
NPU Battery-efficient, sustained on-device inference for supported AI models and APIs. Use requires compatible hardware, software, drivers, model formats and API support.

Windows ML connects model inference to hardware through execution providers. It can find available providers and use an appropriate supported processor; if the preferred one is unavailable, another may be used. This is why an NPU does not make the CPU or GPU obsolete.

Do I need a Copilot+ PC or NPU to use Windows AI features?

No—not for every Windows AI feature. Microsoft says feature requirements vary. Some supported API paths can use a GPU or CPU on non-Copilot+ PCs, while supported APIs on a Copilot+ PC can run on its NPU. Check the requirements for the specific feature or application rather than assuming the Copilot+ label means every AI task uses the NPU.

Microsoft lists qualifying platforms from Qualcomm, Intel and AMD. Requirements and feature availability can vary by feature, device configuration, Windows release and region; consult Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview for current details.

TOPS means trillions of operations per second. The 40-TOPS threshold is a capability requirement, not a direct measure of how quickly every AI feature will feel. TOPS figures should not be treated as a cross-chip performance comparison unless the operations and precision counted are also comparable.

How can I tell whether my PC has an NPU—and whether it is being used?

  1. Identify the exact PC and processor. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for your model to confirm whether it includes an NPU and its rated capability; do not assume every Windows PC has one.
  2. Check the feature’s requirements. Confirm that the Windows feature or app supports the NPU, your device and your installed Windows release. A Copilot+ label alone does not prove that a particular workload runs on the NPU.
  3. Inspect activity on supported systems. Task Manager can show NPU utilization on supported PCs. If the reading is idle, that alone does not mean the NPU is unsupported; the workload may not be running or may not target it.

For example, a PC may have an NPU while a particular app uses the CPU or GPU because its model, runtime or API path does not support NPU execution. An NPU’s presence is a hardware fact; whether it helps with a given task is a software-support question.

What NPU support means for developers

Developers can use Windows ML to connect model inference to available execution providers, including NPU, GPU and CPU options. Choosing an NPU does not automatically make every model compatible: execution can depend on supported model formats, runtime and hardware, and NPU-targeted inference may require model optimization. Microsoft’s Windows ML overview explains the processor roles; its execution-provider guide and NPU API documentation cover the software path.

What to check before relying on an NPU feature

  • Confirm the exact NPU hardware and supported performance in the PC specifications.
  • Check the feature’s requirements for Windows version, device, drivers and region.
  • Look for explicit support for the app’s model and NPU execution path.
  • Use Task Manager’s NPU view on a supported system to observe activity during the relevant workload, while recognizing that an idle reading is not proof of incompatibility.
