What an LLM Does When It “Thinks”: Tokens, Reasoning and Limits

An LLM generates tokens from context. Extra computation can support multi-step answers, but “thinking” does not prove consciousness—and a visible chain of thought may not reveal what caused the answer.

An LLM generates a response by processing its input and producing tokens—small units such as words, word fragments or punctuation—one after another. When people say a model is “thinking,” they usually mean that it is doing additional computation before answering, not that it has a human-like mind or a readable inner monologue.

What is an LLM doing when it thinks?

The model uses the conversation and other supplied context to predict what should come next. Its learned parameters influence those predictions. Each new token becomes part of the context for the next prediction, so the answer is built sequentially rather than retrieved as a finished passage from a human-like stream of thought.

Some reasoning systems use extra computation before producing a visible answer. OpenAI’s API documentation describes reasoning tokens as internal tokens used before a response; they can support planning, tool use, considering alternatives and harder multi-step tasks. The exact implementation and what a user can see depend on the model and product (OpenAI API guide to reasoning).

In systems that use tools, the model may request a tool, receive its output, and continue generating. The result becomes more context for the next step. This extends the process, but it does not mean the model perceives or acts like a person.

What does “thinking” mean—and what does it not mean?

In this setting, “thinking” is shorthand for computation used to produce an answer, which may include intermediate tokens or other internal processing. The term alone does not establish consciousness, feelings, human-style understanding or a continuously running inner voice. The most accurate description is behavioral: the system processes context, performs computation and generates output.

Training and answering are also distinct. In a 2024 explanation of its o1 model, OpenAI said that o1’s performance improved with more reinforcement learning during training and with more time spent thinking at inference. Those claims concern o1 and should not be generalized to every LLM (OpenAI’s account of o1).

Does a chain of thought show how the AI got its answer?

No—not reliably. A chain of thought is text presented as intermediate reasoning, but it is not guaranteed to be a faithful record of what caused the answer. Anthropic’s research on reasoning-trace faithfulness warns that a stated chain may not reflect the process responsible for a model’s response (Anthropic’s faithfulness study).

A trace can still be useful: it may help a reader follow a proposed solution or give a safety team signals to inspect. But monitoring and explanation are different purposes. OpenAI has described monitoring chain-of-thought traces for signs of misbehavior or policy conflicts; that does not make any trace a complete causal explanation (OpenAI on chain-of-thought monitoring).

OpenAI explained in 2024 that it did not expose raw chains of thought to users, citing the value of keeping them unaltered for research and monitoring and concerns about exposing unaligned reasoning (OpenAI’s account of o1). Other vendors and products may handle intermediate content differently, so visibility should be checked for the specific system.

Does asking an AI to think step by step make it more accurate?

It can help on some tasks, but it is not a general accuracy switch. A 2022 study found that prompting models to generate intermediate reasoning steps improved performance on the arithmetic, commonsense and symbolic reasoning tasks it evaluated (Wei et al., “Chain-of-Thought Prompting Elicits Reasoning in Large Language Models”). The result is specific to those study settings; it does not show that longer answers or more steps will improve every model’s answer to every question.

Another research approach, Tree of Thoughts, explores multiple candidate paths and evaluates which to continue rather than following just one chain (Yao et al., “Tree of Thoughts”). This is a proposed method, not proof that every current product searches multiple paths or that more computation guarantees correctness.

Whether added reasoning helps depends on the task, model, prompt, computation budget and evaluation method. For an important answer, check its claims against reliable sources or independently verifiable evidence rather than treating a confident explanation as proof.

How to interpret an AI’s visible reasoning

  • Separate the answer from its explanation. A plausible explanation may be incomplete or unfaithful to the process that produced the answer.
  • Check consequential claims. Use reliable sources or calculations you can verify, especially for decisions with meaningful consequences.
  • Account for the specific system. Models differ in whether they use reasoning tokens, call tools, show summaries or hide intermediate content.
  • Judge performance on the task that matters. More computation may help with difficult multi-step work, but can bring trade-offs in latency and token or usage cost; no model category is best for every task.
