An APU combines a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU) on one chip. In a handheld gaming PC, the CPU runs the operating system and game logic, while the integrated GPU renders the graphics. That lets the handheld produce game visuals without a separate graphics card, but the APU is only one part of the device—and its performance depends on power, cooling, memory, and the game.
What does APU mean?
APU stands for Accelerated Processing Unit. The term describes a processor that places CPU and GPU microprocessors on the same die—the piece of silicon inside the chip. Microsoft used the term this way when describing the AMD Ryzen Z1 processors in the ROG Ally: the CPU and GPU are on the same die (Microsoft Windows Experience Blog, April 26, 2023).

The CPU and GPU remain distinct processing resources with different jobs; combining them does not make them interchangeable. Nor is the APU the whole handheld. A complete device also needs system memory, storage, a battery, a display, cooling, controls, and software.

The CPU runs the general work
The CPU handles operating-system tasks, game logic, and other general-purpose computation. It also coordinates work, including tasks that need to be sent to the GPU.

The integrated GPU draws the game
The GPU processes graphics instructions and renders the images shown on the screen. Because it is built into the APU, a handheld can produce graphics without a separate desktop-style graphics card.
Memory serves both sides
On the handheld APU hardware discussed by AMD GPUOpen, system RAM is shared by AMD Zen CPU cores and RDNA graphics compute units. Game assets and processing data move through that memory, so its capacity and bandwidth can matter to both CPU and GPU work (AMD GPUOpen).

A chip’s capabilities are only part of sustained gaming performance. The handheld’s power profile and cooling constrain how it can operate over time. AMD GPUOpen describes device-specific profiles tuned to thermal and power limits, illustrating why the same processor family can behave differently in different chassis.

What do Ryzen Z-series specifications tell you?
AMD’s current Ryzen Z-series product information lists the following configurations and configurable thermal design power (TDP) ranges. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results; they describe processor configurations, not a promise about performance in a particular handheld.

Source for the listed configurations and ranges: AMD Ryzen Z-series product overview and specifications, accessed 2026. The differences show that “APU” names a combined CPU-and-GPU design, not a fixed level of processing power. The tiers have different core counts, graphics architectures, and power ranges; comparing those figures is useful for identifying what is in a chip, but not for predicting a game’s results without the rest of the device and workload.
What should you compare when evaluating a handheld?
If you are comparing devices, look beyond the APU label. The processor’s CPU and graphics configuration are part of the picture; memory, cooling, power settings, and screen resolution also shape the experience. A spec sheet can tell you what hardware is present, but it cannot by itself establish real-world frame rates or battery life.
