What an AI Context Window Is—and What It Doesn’t Remember

A context window is an AI model’s per-request token budget—not a permanent memory. Learn what counts, how limits differ, and what to do when a request is too large.

An AI context window is the finite token budget available for a request and its response. It determines how much information a model can work with at once; it is not a durable memory, and a larger window does not guarantee that every detail will be used accurately.

What is a context window?

OpenAI defines a context window as the maximum number of tokens that can be used in a single request. Google describes Gemini’s window as the combined limit for input and output tokens. In practical terms, it is the model’s working space for the material supplied to it and the response it generates.

“Short-term memory” can be a useful analogy, as Google’s long-context guide puts it, but it is only an analogy. A context window is a technical capacity measured in tokens, not a human-like memory system.

What counts toward the context window?

The exact accounting depends on the model and product. The budget may include the prompt, conversation history supplied with the request, and the generated response. For some OpenAI models, reasoning tokens also count. A model can additionally impose a separate maximum on output, so the full context limit is not necessarily available for your prompt or answer.

Multimodal requests can use the budget too: images, audio, and video may be represented as tokens or other model-specific input units. The Gemini token guide explains its tokenization and counting approach at Google AI for Developers.

Are tokens the same as words or pages?

No. A token can be a whole word, part of a word, or another encoded unit. Token counts vary with the model’s encoding and the language and content being processed. OpenAI’s token guide explains why a fixed word-to-token conversion is unreliable and how to check usage: Understanding and counting tokens.

Page counts and lines of code are only rough illustrations. For example, Google’s Gemini Apps help page, accessed in 2026, described a 1-million-token window as corresponding to up to 1,500 pages or 30,000 lines of code. Those are estimates, not a reliable conversion for every document or programming language.

How large is a context window?

There is no single context-window size for AI. Limits vary by model, version, API endpoint, app, and account plan. These official examples were displayed in documentation accessed on October 7, 2026; product limits can change, so check the current page for the exact model and service you use.

Product or model example Documented context limit Important distinction
Gemini Apps plans, Google help page 32k tokens without an AI plan; 128k for AI Plus; 1 million for AI Pro and AI Ultra Consumer-app plan figures, not API-wide limits. Google’s page gives the approximate page and code-line equivalents above. Google Gemini Apps limits and upgrades
Claude API, Anthropic Help Center 1M tokens for Sonnet 4; 200K+ for other models API figures. Anthropic’s page separately described 200K context on paid Claude plans, with an Enterprise Sonnet 4 exception of 500K. API and consumer-plan limits are not interchangeable. GPT-4o, dated model example in OpenAI API documentation 128k total context; 16,384-token maximum output The documentation identifies GPT-4o dated 2024-08-06. This is a specific model example, not a current limit for every OpenAI model. OpenAI conversation state documentation

These numbers describe capacity, not comparative answer quality or value. A consumer subscription’s allowance, an API model’s limit, and a model family’s headline figure may refer to different things.

Does a larger context window mean the model remembers more?

It means more material may fit in one request—not that the model will retrieve every detail, reason perfectly across all of it, or perform equally well regardless of where a detail appears. Google advises avoiding unnecessary tokens and notes that longer queries generally increase time to first token. Its long-context guide discusses how to work with long inputs.

Chat history is also a product behavior, not part of the definition. An app may resend earlier turns, summarize them, retrieve selected material, or leave older content out. The model can use only what the current request or system makes available within its budget.

What happens if you exceed the context window?

There is no universal behavior. An API may reject an oversized request or truncate it; an application may handle the limit differently. OpenAI warns that an oversized prompt can lead to truncated output. Do not assume every system silently removes the oldest conversation turns.

Even when a request fits, leave enough room for the answer and, where applicable, reasoning tokens. A total context limit is not necessarily the same as the maximum output length.

How to work within a context limit

  1. Check the exact model and surface. Use the current model documentation for the API model or the help page for the app and plan. Do not rely on a family-level headline number.
  2. Count or estimate the actual input. Use the model’s tokenizer or the service’s token-counting or usage tools. The Gemini token guide and OpenAI token guide explain their respective approaches.
  3. Reserve space for what the model must generate. Account for output limits and reasoning-token accounting when the model includes reasoning in its context budget.
  4. Remove material that does not help. Cut repeated or irrelevant content; unnecessary tokens consume capacity, and longer inputs can add latency.
  5. Test with representative material. Check whether the model reliably finds the details your task needs. For some workloads, retrieval, chunking, or summarization may be more useful than sending everything at once.
