What an 8K Polling Rate Means for Gaming Mouse Latency

At 8,000 Hz, a gaming mouse reports at nominal 0.125 ms intervals. That can reduce polling wait, but it does not remove the other stages of click-to-screen latency.

An 8K polling rate means a gaming mouse can send up to 8,000 reports per second. That gives it a nominal report interval of 0.125 milliseconds (ms), compared with 1 ms at 1,000 Hz. It can reduce the time spent waiting for a mouse report, but it does not make the entire click-to-screen path 0.875 ms faster: that is only the maximum theoretical difference in the polling-wait component.

What does 8K polling rate mean?

Polling rate is how often a mouse reports its position and button presses to the computer. A rate of 8,000 Hz means up to 8,000 reports per second. The reciprocal of that rate gives the nominal interval between reports:

  • 8,000 Hz: 0.125 ms per report
  • 4,000 Hz: 0.25 ms per report
  • 2,000 Hz: 0.5 ms per report
  • 1,000 Hz: 1 ms per report

These are intervals, not measurements of how long a click takes to appear on screen. Razer’s January 28, 2021 announcement of the Viper 8KHz describes its 8,000 Hz rate as a 0.125 ms interval. Logitech’s polling-rate explainer gives 1,000 Hz as one report per millisecond and 125 Hz as one update every 8 ms.

How much latency can 8K polling reduce?

The mouse and computer do not necessarily line up a movement or click with the instant a report is sent. Depending on when an input occurs relative to the next report, it can wait for that report. Under the simplifying assumption of evenly spaced reports, the polling wait ranges from nearly zero to nearly one full report interval.

Moving from 1,000 Hz to 8,000 Hz reduces the longest possible wait within that one component from nearly 1 ms to nearly 0.125 ms. The maximum difference is 0.875 ms. This is a theoretical comparison of polling wait—not a measured improvement in total system latency or a promise that every input will be 0.875 ms faster.

Why the whole click-to-screen path is longer

A mouse report is only one stage in the route from an input to a visible response. NVIDIA’s input-to-display latency overview describes a path that can include mouse hardware and click processing such as debounce, USB polling, operating-system and driver handling, game input sampling, simulation, render submission and queues, GPU rendering, and display composition, scanout, processing, and pixel response.

Increasing the polling rate can shorten the wait for a USB report. It does not remove those other stages. In particular, the game’s sampling and rendering schedule and the display’s behavior still matter; game sampling wait can also vary with CPU frame rate. For that reason, a 0.125 ms report interval should not be read as a 0.125 ms click-to-screen response.

Polling rate is not DPI

Polling rate controls how often the mouse sends updates. DPI (dots per inch) affects how far the cursor moves for a given physical movement, and therefore changes sensitivity. It is a separate setting, not a way to increase report frequency. NVIDIA’s DPI and sensitivity explanation notes that higher DPI does not itself mean lower latency.

What higher polling rates can cost

Very high report rates create more USB traffic and may use more CPU resources. Logitech says that some users can see minor frame-rate drops above 1 kHz, and its support guidance recommends lowering the report rate or trying another game if FPS drops occur. These are possible effects, not guaranteed results; their significance depends on the PC and game.

For a wireless mouse, higher rates can also consume battery faster. Logitech’s guidance treats CPU use, game performance, and wireless power as practical trade-offs to check on the actual setup rather than outcomes that apply identically to every mouse or computer.

How to decide whether to use 8K

Try 8K if your mouse offers it and your system remains stable, especially if you use a high-refresh display and care about minimizing input delays. The potential gain is confined to polling wait, so treat it as one part of the system rather than a guaranteed upgrade to aim or reaction time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with the rate you normally use. Note the game, frame rate and stability, and—if the mouse is wireless—battery behavior.
  2. Change only the polling rate. Select 8,000 Hz in the mouse’s software or settings, if available, while keeping other relevant settings the same.
  3. Compare in the same game and conditions. Watch for stutter, reduced FPS, or battery changes, and consider whether the input feels meaningfully different to you.
  4. Lower the rate if there is a problem. If frame rate or stability worsens, test a lower rate such as 4,000 or 1,000 Hz, or compare another game. Keep the setting that works best on your hardware.

Razer has reported smoother-feeling input from players during its product testing and development, and its executive has promoted lower latency as beneficial. Those are manufacturer-reported impressions and opinion, not independent evidence that all players will notice 8K or gain a competitive advantage. The cited material does not establish a representative estimate of how many players perceive a difference or how much 8K changes competitive results.
