What Allocation Unit Size Means and How It Affects File Storage

Allocation unit size determines the smallest filesystem block assigned to file data. Learn how it affects wasted space, NTFS limits, and format choices.

Allocation unit size is the smallest block of filesystem space assigned to a file. Because files occupy whole blocks, a file’s “size on disk” can be larger than its actual file size. For most general-purpose drives, keep the formatting tool’s default unless you have a specific compatibility, capacity-limit, or workload requirement.

What an allocation unit is

A filesystem stores file data in units of a fixed size. Windows commonly calls these units clusters; “allocation unit” and “cluster” generally refer to the same concept in this context. It is a filesystem setting, not the drive’s advertised capacity or the device’s physical sector size. Microsoft’s NTFS overview describes clusters as the units used to allocate space.

Think of storage as a row of equal-sized boxes. A file needs enough whole boxes to hold its data, and the unused space at the end of its last box cannot ordinarily be assigned to another file. That remainder is often called slack space.

Why “size on disk” can be larger than file size

Suppose a filesystem uses 4 KB allocation units. A file of 1 byte still needs at least one unit for its data under ordinary cluster allocation, while a 4 KB file fits in one unit. A file just over 4 KB needs a second unit, even though most of that second unit remains unused. This rounding explains why small files can use noticeably more space on disk than their contents require.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The effect depends on the filesystem and how the data is stored. Filesystem bookkeeping, sparse files, compression, and resident data can change how file contents consume space, so the whole-unit example is a useful model rather than a description of every file in every situation. Microsoft explains the cluster-based allocation model in its NTFS documentation.

What changes when the unit is smaller or larger

Consideration Smaller allocation units Larger allocation units
Small-file space use Usually less unused space at the end of each file’s final unit. Can leave more unused space per small file.
Large files and filesystem limits May support lower maximum volume or file sizes, depending on filesystem and operating-system version. Can support higher limits in some filesystem configurations.
Feature compatibility NTFS compression is supported at 4 KB allocation units. NTFS compression is not supported above 4096 bytes.
Performance No universal speed advantage is established by the cited Microsoft documentation. May fit particular large-file or deduplication workloads, but is not a general speed upgrade.

These are tradeoffs, not a universal ranking. Smaller units can be useful when a volume holds many small files; larger units can be appropriate for a documented workload or filesystem limit. The available choices also depend on the filesystem and formatting tool.

NTFS examples: defaults, limits, and 64 KB guidance

For NTFS, Microsoft lists 4 KB as the default cluster size. Its sizing table associates 4 KB clusters with a 16 TB maximum and 64 KB clusters with a 256 TB maximum in the listed sizing model. These are filesystem limits, not estimates of usable capacity. Actual maximums depend on cluster size, cluster count, and Windows version. Microsoft says NTFS volumes can reach 8 PB on Windows Server 2019 and later and Windows 10 version 1709 and later; earlier Windows versions support up to 256 TB. See the NTFS overview and size limits.

Microsoft specifically recommends 64 KB allocation units for NTFS volumes used with Data Deduplication and for certain large-file workloads, including VHDX files larger than 1 TB. Its format command reference also documents the large file record segment option for these scenarios. This guidance is workload-specific: it does not mean every drive benefits from 64 KB units.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

There is a feature tradeoff: NTFS compression is unsupported when allocation units exceed 4096 bytes, according to the same format reference. If you need compression, do not select a larger unit without checking that requirement.

What about exFAT, USB drives, and SD cards?

Allocation units are not an NTFS-only concept. Microsoft’s exFAT specification describes a cluster heap and explains how cluster size is determined from sector-related fields. Implementations can use larger clusters to control cluster counts and avoid very large FAT structures. The specification permits a range of sizes, but the formatter and device compatibility determine the options actually available to a user.

Removable media can use other filesystems. The Linux mkfs.fat manual identifies FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32 as widely used on removable media such as USB sticks and SD cards. Do not assume that a setting available for one filesystem or operating system will be available—or appropriate—for another.

How to choose a setting safely

  1. Use the default for ordinary storage. For a general-purpose drive, leave the allocation unit at the format tool’s default unless a specific need calls for a different value.
  2. Check the workload. For NTFS Data Deduplication volumes or qualifying large-file workloads such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB, consult Microsoft’s format guidance on 64 KB units and the large file record segment option.
  3. Check required features and limits. Confirm the filesystem’s size limits for the Windows versions that must use the volume, and check whether features such as NTFS compression are needed.
  4. Back up before formatting. Choosing allocation unit size is ordinarily part of formatting, and reformatting can erase data. Back up files before proceeding.

Do not change the value solely in expectation of faster everyday performance: the Microsoft documentation cited here specifies limits and workload guidance, not a universal benchmark showing that larger allocation units speed up ordinary storage.
