On standard PS5, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026; PS5 Pro uses PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). In supported games, these systems can improve perceived detail and image stability, but they do not upgrade the game’s underlying art or guarantee a higher frame rate.
How AI upscaling works
A game does not always render every frame at the resolution sent to the display. An upscaler takes the lower-resolution image the game has rendered and reconstructs it into a higher-resolution output. Machine-learning upscalers can use spatial and temporal image information—details within a frame and information across frames—to make that reconstruction. AMD’s FSR documentation describes this general approach; it is background on upscaling, not a disclosure of QSSR’s precise implementation.

Sony says its QSSR library analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. Reconstruction can make details appear clearer, but it is not the same as rendering every underlying element at the output resolution. The result depends on the game’s implementation and the image being reconstructed.

Sony announced QSSR for the standard PS5 on October 1, 2026. It describes QSSR as a faster performance tier developed from its AI graphics work with AMD, using a streamlined neural network and an implementation tuned for standard PS5 hardware. Sony says PSSR remains the higher-end tier for PS5 Pro. These are Sony’s platform descriptions, not independent comparative measurements. See Sony’s QSSR announcement.

| Confirmed support in the cited announcements | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, announced as initial titles on October 1, 2026. | Sony listed supported games for the upgraded rollout; its February 27, 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used in over 50 titles by then. |
| Expected image effect | Sony and developers describe improved detail or clarity and stability; results depend on the game. | Sony says results vary by title and notes possible unexpected visual effects. |
Sony said the two initial QSSR games would receive patches on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting. Sony also said the feature would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that gives studios the opportunity to adopt it, not a guarantee that every PS5 game will support it. Support can change as games are patched, so check a game’s current update notes for its available graphics options.
The over-50 figure is Sony’s reported count of PS5 Pro PSSR titles as of February 27, 2026, not a count of QSSR games or an independent assessment of image quality. Sony’s announcement is at PlayStation.Blog.

What it can improve—and what it cannot
Potential image benefits
In a supported game, upscaling can make a lower-resolution render look clearer at the final output resolution and can help preserve fine details or reduce visible instability such as flicker. These are intended effects, not guaranteed improvements in every scene. Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions praised QSSR’s clarity, fine-detail resolution and temporal stability in their respective games; those are developer statements, not controlled cross-game tests.

Upscaling works on image data the game has rendered. By itself, it does not redesign the game’s art, add geometry to its models, change animation or simulation, improve the authored effects, or create new content. It may reconstruct apparent detail in the output, so it would be inaccurate to say it only stretches pixels or can never add visible detail. But reconstruction is not a general upgrade to the game’s source assets or systems.

Performance is not automatic
A developer may use an upscaler as part of a trade-off between internal rendering resolution, image quality and performance. That does not mean enabling QSSR automatically raises frame rate. Sony’s QSSR announcement does not claim that it inserts extra frames, so it should not be confused with frame generation. The cited sources provide no universal percentage gain for image sharpness, frame rate or latency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why results vary
Upscaling reconstructs an image rather than recovering a perfect, known original. The result can differ with a game’s implementation and the content of a particular scene. Fine detail, motion and changing image data can be difficult cases for reconstruction, and artifacts are possible. Sony explicitly says results vary by title for PS5 Pro’s PSSR and warns that unexpected visual effects may occur.

For PS5 Pro, Sony’s March 16, 2026 update says users can enable improved PSSR for supported games and turn it off if they see unexpected effects. That update began a phased rollout. The setting and supported games are specific to Pro and should not be read as a system-wide QSSR control for standard PS5. Details are in Sony’s PSSR rollout announcement.
