What AI Engines Actually Cite About LLM Gateways—and What We Know

There is no established list of the pages AI engines cite for LLM gateway questions. Platform guidance explains eligibility and source displays, but not a cross-engine ranking.

There is no established, stable list of pages that AI engines cite when asked about LLM gateways. The available evidence explains how some products present sources and what certain platforms say about eligibility, but it does not identify which gateway vendors, comparisons, or documentation pages are cited most often. To answer that empirically, you would need to test the same questions across defined products and repeat the tests over time.

What is known about AI citations for LLM gateway questions?

Official platform guidance describes parts of source selection and display, not a cross-engine ranking of gateway pages. A product’s ability to show sources does not establish which pages it will choose for a particular question, or whether a cited page supports the answer attached to it.

  • ChatGPT Search: OpenAI says its results are ranked using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. It also states, “Placement is not guaranteed.” A site must allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl it to be eligible for inclusion, but eligibility is not a promise of ranking or citation. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help page does not provide a full ranking formula.
  • Google Search generative features: Google says sites do not need special AI markup, an llms.txt file, prescribed content chunking, or inauthentic mentions to appear in its generative features. Its advice is to prioritize useful, high-quality content and ordinary SEO practices. Google also says, “There’s no ideal page length, and in the end, make pages for your audience, not just for generative AI search.” This guidance applies to Google Search, not to other answer engines. Google Search Central’s guide gives the platform’s recommendations.
  • Perplexity: Its product page describes answers as sourced and cited, with sources readers can inspect. That establishes how Perplexity presents its product; it does not identify the pages selected for LLM gateway questions or disclose a general selection formula. Perplexity’s product page describes the citation experience.
  • Gemini Apps: Google says links may be associated with parts of a response, and some responses do not have a Sources button. Sources may include public websites and user-connected materials. Gemini Apps Help explains the source-link interface.

Why these systems should not be treated as one source-ranking engine

ChatGPT Search, Gemini Apps, Google’s generative features in Search, and Perplexity are distinct products and surfaces. Their browsing behavior, source presentation, and eligibility guidance are not interchangeable. In Gemini Apps, for example, some answers lack a Sources button; ChatGPT’s web-search guidance discusses crawler eligibility and ranking; Google’s Search guidance addresses its own generative features.

Even the output format can differ. One set of LLM Gateway documentation shows URL citation annotations and a search_results list for some search-grounded models. It notes that citation formats vary and that date fields appear only when providers report them. This is an example of one gateway’s documented response format, not an industry-wide standard for how answer engines choose or expose sources.

A citation is a starting point, not proof

A visible source link does not guarantee that the page backs every claim beside it. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce inaccurate or misleading text, including fabricated citations, and advises users to verify important information by visiting sources. In a 2024 study, Venkit, Laban, Zhou, Mao, and Wu involved 21 participants in a user study of AI search and reported hallucination and inaccurate citation among the limitations they found. The work also included automated evaluation of three engines. These findings are evidence that citation errors can occur, not a measurement of every current answer engine or gateway query. Read the 2024 study abstract on arXiv.

A 2025 FAccT paper reported that participants consulted fewer sources while using answer engines than under traditional search conditions. On page 7, it reports mean citation hovers of 2.10 for Perplexity, 2.00 for Bing Copilot, and 11.81 for YouChat. Those values describe the study’s participants and conditions; they are not current platform-wide usage statistics. Read the FAccT 2025 paper.

How to check whether an AI citation supports its claim

  1. Open the cited page. Do not rely on the title, snippet, or the answer engine’s summary alone.
  2. Find the passage that bears on the claim. Check whether it states the relevant fact directly, rather than merely mentioning the same product or topic.
  3. Check scope and date. A gateway’s own documentation may establish how its product works, but it is not automatically independent evidence for a comparative claim. Confirm that a cited version, feature, or date matches what the answer says.
  4. Separate supported facts from inference. If the source supports only part of a sentence, treat the unsupported portion as unverified.
  5. Look for corroboration when the claim matters. Compare the cited material with primary documentation or another suitable source, especially for technical or time-sensitive details.

How to find out what engines cite for gateway questions

A defensible answer requires a dated, repeatable audit rather than a list assembled from isolated outputs. Use identical prompts across the specific products and surfaces you want to compare, then record each result. A practical audit should capture:

  • The exact question and its intent, such as asking for an explanation, a comparison, or implementation guidance.
  • The product and answer surface used, including whether web search was enabled; do not combine ChatGPT Search, Gemini Apps, and Google Search generative features into one category.
  • The date, location, and account or product mode where relevant.
  • Every exact cited URL, its publisher type—such as vendor documentation, independent review, directory, forum, or academic source—and whether the answer displayed citations at all.
  • Whether each cited page supports the specific claim associated with it, and whether any citations are inaccurate.
  • Results from repeated runs, including duplicate URLs and changes in source selection.

Only after defining those conditions can you report which URLs appeared in that test, how often they appeared, and how stable they were. Such results would describe that audit’s prompts, products, dates, and settings—not a universal ranking of gateway pages.

What gateway publishers can reasonably do

For ChatGPT Search, allowing OAI-Searchbot is an eligibility condition, not a guarantee of placement. For Google Search generative features, Google advises publishers to focus on helpful content and ordinary SEO rather than special AI markup or artificial mentions. Neither point establishes a citation strategy that works across all answer engines.

For readers, the most reliable approach is to inspect the evidence behind a citation. For publishers or analysts who want to compare engines, transparent prompts, exact URLs, claim-level checks, and repeat runs make the findings interpretable instead of implying a stable list where none has been established.
