AI coding assistants are useful for bounded programming work, but they are not reliable substitutes for a developer’s judgment. They can draft and modify code, explain unfamiliar logic, help debug, and run tests when given the tools to do so. Their results are most dependable when a person supplies clear requirements, checks the changes, and verifies them with tests and review.
What counts as an AI coding assistant?
The label covers tools with different levels of autonomy. Inline completion suggests code as you type. A chat assistant answers questions or proposes changes. A coding agent can inspect files and use tools such as a shell, tests, or external APIs to take action. Anthropic’s February 2026 analysis defines an agent in this tool-using sense; more autonomy can help it iterate, but it also increases the importance of controlling permissions and checking what it does. Anthropic’s analysis of agentic coding describes provider-observed patterns, not a universal account of every product.

What can they do reasonably well?
- Draft and modify bounded code: They can propose implementations for a clearly described function, small feature, or localized change. The developer still needs to confirm that the implementation satisfies the real requirement.
- Explain code and suggest debugging paths: They can help interpret unfamiliar code or errors and suggest likely fixes. Treat suggestions as hypotheses to verify, not as proof of the cause.
- Assist with tests and iteration: An agent with suitable tool access can run tests and revise a change based on results. Passing tests only establishes that the code passed those tests; it does not establish that important cases were covered.
- Support work when the user brings domain knowledge: Anthropic’s analysis of about 400,000 Claude Code sessions involving about 235,000 people from October 2025 through April 2026 found people made most planning decisions while Claude made most execution decisions. It also associated domain expertise with higher session success. These are observations from one product’s usage, not proof that all assistants or users will behave similarly. Anthropic’s analysis of coding and expertise gives its methods and findings.
How much faster do they make developers?
There is no single productivity figure that applies to every developer or task. The 2025 International AI Safety Report summarized separate GitHub Copilot studies reporting productivity gains of 8–22% in one study and 56% in another. These are different study results, not a pooled estimate or a promise of improvement for an individual team. The report also said inexperienced developers tended to benefit more.

The same report summarized a study in which GPT-4o, o1, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, used with agent scaffolding, succeeded on nearly 40% of 77 varied tasks; humans given 30 minutes per task achieved a similar rate. This is an older, mixed-task evaluation, not a current measure of any product’s performance on your codebase. More generated code per hour is not necessarily faster delivery if review, correction, integration, testing, or maintenance takes longer.

What still needs a human?
A developer or team must define what the software should do, including constraints and edge cases that may not be obvious from a prompt. Generated code can be incorrect or incomplete, and a narrow test suite can pass even when a change misses the real requirement. Human review is especially important for security-sensitive behavior, data handling, authorization, and changes with production impact.
In its Technology Monitoring Report – Generative AI in Software Development, published 9 July 2026, eu-LISA says assistants may support productivity gains but require careful attention to system security and quality, ongoing evaluation, and adequate resources to review generated code.

Why tests and benchmarks can mislead
Tests are useful evidence, but their coverage and assumptions matter. A test suite that misses an edge case may give false confidence; a test that enforces an unstated detail may reject a functionally reasonable solution. Benchmark scores have the same problem: they depend on task descriptions, tests, allowed tools, and evaluation methods.

Reported issues included overly strict or low-coverage tests, underspecified prompts, and misleading prompts. These figures concern the quality of that benchmark split, not the rate at which coding assistants fail at real-world work. OpenAI’s SWE-Bench Pro audit explains the review.
Rank #3
For that reason, do not treat one benchmark score as a product ranking. Compare tools on the same repository and task, with the same model version, time budget, tool access, and tests. Assess whether the final change is correct and maintainable, whether it introduces regressions or security problems, and how much human correction time it takes—not just whether a patch compiles.
How to use an assistant without outsourcing judgment
- Bound the task. Provide repository context, acceptance criteria, relevant constraints, and the behavior that must not change.
- Ask for assumptions and a plan. Have the assistant identify the files and behavior it expects to change, then correct misunderstandings before implementation.
- Inspect the diff. Check that the changes address the requirement rather than merely satisfying a narrow test or following an incorrect assumption.
- Run and extend tests. Execute relevant automated tests, then add coverage for important edge cases that the existing suite does not address.
- Review consequential code with appropriate expertise. Pay particular attention to security, permissions, sensitive data, and production effects.
- Limit agent permissions. If an agent can access files, run shell commands, or connect to a network, grant only what the task requires and inspect actions before allowing consequential changes. OpenAI describes sandboxing and configurable network access for GPT-5.2-Codex in its system addendum; those controls are specific to that system and should not be assumed for other assistants.
How to compare tools for your work
There is no established independent, current head-to-head winner across the dimensions that matter. Choose a representative task from your own work and compare tools under equivalent conditions. Check the following:
Rank #4
- Operating scope: Does it offer inline suggestions, chat-based answers, or an agent that can inspect files and run commands?
- Context and fit: Can it use the repository context, languages, and frameworks your work requires?
- Autonomy and controls: What actions can it take, what permissions can you restrict, and can you review or stop its actions?
- Data handling: Does the tool’s data policy meet your organization’s requirements?
- Verified outcome: On the same task and tests, does it produce a correct, maintainable change with acceptable security and regression risk—and how much human time does that take?
Use the result as evidence about that task and setup, not a guarantee about every future change. Task complexity matters: the 2025 International AI Safety Report described current agents as succeeding on many low- to medium-complexity tasks while struggling more as tasks require many steps or become more complex. That is a summary of evidence available at publication, not a permanent ceiling on capability.
