The shell reads that text, treats it as command language, and runs whatever it names: a built-in, a function, an executable, or a script. The exact path depends on the terminal mode, the shell, the application, the platform, and the command itself.
The explanation below follows the POSIX terminal interface and shell language as The Open Group defines them. It is not a byte-level trace of every keyboard, terminal emulator, or operating system, because those details differ between setups.

Four separate layers are involved
Most confusion comes from treating the keyboard, the terminal, and the shell as one thing. They are separate layers, and each one has a different job.

|---|---|---|
| Keyboard and terminal emulator | Turns a key press into input for the terminal session | Does not guarantee one universal byte sequence for Enter across every emulator, platform, or remote connection |
| Terminal input processing (the POSIX terminal interface and line discipline) | Buffers input, can echo characters, and in canonical mode makes input available line by line | Does not interpret shell syntax |
| Program reading the terminal (usually the shell) | Reads the completed line and acts on it | Does not necessarily receive input line by line, because some programs choose other input modes |
| The command named in the line | Runs as a built-in, function, executable, or script | Does not always start a new process |
The POSIX terminal interface is documented in The Open Group’s General Terminal Interface (POSIX) specification. The shell’s behavior is documented in the Shell Command Language section of POSIX.1-2024.

What happens after you press Enter
- The key press becomes terminal input. The emulator translates the key into input for the terminal session. On most POSIX systems, the terminal driver’s settings determine how the newline-type character is treated, so the same key can behave slightly differently on different systems.
- The input mode decides when a read returns. In canonical mode, POSIX processes input in lines delimited by NL, EOF, or EOL. A read does not return until a line has been typed or a signal is received, and at most one line is returned per read. The interface can echo characters as you type them, and canonical mode can apply line-oriented editing before the application sees anything.
- Enter usually supplies the line delimiter. In a normal interactive shell, this is the common configuration. It is not a promise that every application uses canonical mode.
- The shell receives the completed line. The shell reads the text and begins processing it.
- The shell parses and expands the command. The POSIX shell overview describes reading input, breaking it into tokens, parsing it, applying word expansions, performing redirections, and then executing the result.
- The command runs and reports a status. The shell may wait for completion and collect an exit status, which is how it knows whether the command succeeded.
Canonical and noncanonical input
The difference between these two modes explains most cases where Enter seems to behave oddly.
| Question | Canonical input | Noncanonical input |
|---|---|---|
| When does a read return? | After a line delimiter or a signal | As input arrives, according to the mode’s settings |
| Who handles line editing? | The terminal interface, before the application receives a complete line | The application, which reads keystrokes directly or runs its own editor |
| Typical use | Ordinary shell prompts | Full-screen programs and applications that respond to individual keys |
A program that reads keys one at a time does not need Enter to finish a line. It can react to every key, which is why a text editor can move the cursor or change modes without waiting for a newline.

How the shell turns a line into work
Once the shell has the line, it treats the text as a small program. Three details matter most.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Tokenizing, expansion, and redirection
The shell splits the text into tokens, then applies word expansions such as variable substitution. It also sets up redirections, such as sending output to a file, before the command runs. This is why a variable can change what a command receives, and why a redirection can run before the command has done anything at all.

Built-ins and functions
Some names never reach an executable file. A shell built-in, such as cd, is handled by the shell itself. A shell function, defined by the user in the shell, is also handled inside the shell. So pressing Enter on cd /tmp does not launch a separate program to change directories.
External executables
When the name refers to an external executable file or script, the shell runs it as a separate program. That is the case most people picture when they think about running a command.

Does every command start a new process?
No. Built-ins and functions run within the shell. External commands are different, and the process model matters here.
The POSIX exec functions replace the current process image with a new one. A successful exec-family call does not return to the old image. Shells usually avoid replacing themselves by creating a child process first and running the exec-family call in that child, so the interactive shell keeps running after the command ends. That is how the shell can collect an exit status and show you a prompt again.

Why Enter behaves differently in some applications
Enter is not handled the same way everywhere. Two cases explain most of the differences.
Programs that use the GNU Readline library
Many interactive tools use GNU Readline for line editing, such as history and cursor movement. The Readline manual page states: “readline reads a line from the terminal and return it, using prompt as a prompt.” The line it returns has its final newline removed. This behavior belongs to Readline, not to every shell or every application, so an interactive program that uses it may edit and return text differently from a bare shell prompt.
Programs that choose noncanonical input
An application can switch the terminal to noncanonical input and handle each key itself. In that case, Enter is just another key. The application decides whether it means “submit,” “insert a new line,” or nothing at all.

If you want to see which mode a terminal is in, run the following command in the terminal you are using:
Quick Recap
- Run
stty -a | grep -w icanon. The output shows eithericanonor-icanon. The first means canonical line input is on; the second means it is off. - If the output shows
-icanonat a normal shell prompt, the shell or a leftover program may have changed the mode. Close the program and check again. - To see whether a name is a built-in, a function, or a file, run
type cdortype name_of_command. The output reports which kind of command the shell will run.
Common symptoms and what they usually mean:
- Enter appears to do nothing. The program may be in noncanonical mode, or it may be waiting for more input. Check the program’s own prompt or help text.
- The same key works differently in another app. That app probably has its own line editor or input mode, so the difference is expected.
- A command does not seem to start a process. Run
typeon its name. A built-in or function will not appear as an external file.
