This title is a first-person essay, but no app, author, or year of use is identified. Without those details, there is no honest way to say what changed. A useful account needs to name the app and explain what the writer actually did with it—not invent features, incidents, or results.
Start with the app, the goal, and the year
Identify the app, the platform or device, your role as its user, and the period you mean by “a year.” Then say what you hoped it would help you accomplish. For example, were you trying to organize projects, track expenses, communicate with a team, or complete another recurring task? Use the goal that was genuinely yours.

That context matters because usability is not an app’s abstract quality. ISO 9241-11:2018 defines it as “the extent to which a system, product or service can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” The [ISO 9241-11:2018 overview] describes the framework; ISO’s official material says the edition published in March 2018 was reviewed and confirmed in 2023.

Choose two or three tasks you repeatedly used the app for. For each, explain the circumstances: what you were trying to do, on which device or platform, and what else shaped the task. Say whether the app completed it fully and accurately, how much effort it took, and whether the experience suited your needs.

- Effectiveness: Did you finish the task accurately and completely?
- Efficiency: What time, effort, or other resources did it require?
- Satisfaction: Did the experience meet your needs and expectations?
These are related but distinct questions; a task can succeed while still taking too much effort or leaving you dissatisfied. The [ISO 9241-115:2024 official text] includes definitions drawn from ISO 9241-11:2018.
Show what changed over the year
Compare an early expectation or workflow with a later one using specific examples: dated notes, version history, or incidents you remember. Separate changes in your own habits from changes to the app. If you adopted a workaround, stopped using a feature, or dropped the app for a task, explain what happened and why.

If you did not keep records or measure time and errors, say that the comparison is based on personal recollection. Do not turn a memory into a measured result, and do not imply that an app update caused a change unless you can identify the version or update involved.
Explain the friction as well as what worked
For each recurring task, include the point at which the app helped or got in the way. Name any workaround you actually used, whether it let you finish the task, and what extra effort it involved. Mention abandoned tasks or features where relevant. A balanced account lets readers judge the trade-off against their own needs instead of relying on a general verdict such as “easy to use.”

Usability testing offers one way to gather stronger evidence: NIST describes evaluating a product with representative users performing representative tasks, using quantitative measures such as task completion, time, and errors alongside qualitative comments and preferences. See [NIST’s usability-testing overview]. Unless you actually conducted such an evaluation, present your account as your own experience, not a formal test.
Say who your experience applies to
Describe the kind of user and situation reflected in your year of use—for example, your role, goals, tasks, devices, and working environment. Those details help readers decide whether your experience resembles theirs. One person’s routine cannot establish how the app will work for everyone.

Make the verdict practical
Conclude by saying whether you would keep using the app under the same circumstances. Explain who might benefit, which limitations matter for that person, and what would make you choose differently. Tie the recommendation to the tasks and evidence you described, rather than extending it beyond your experience.
