It can make devices without keyboards usable for text entry, offer alternative ways to select keys, and adapt layouts or input assistance to a language or task. Its benefits depend on the device, software, and user; it is not automatically faster, easier, more accessible, or more secure than a physical keyboard.
What is a virtual keyboard?
A virtual keyboard is a software keyboard interface that displays keys on a screen or otherwise provides keyboard input without dedicated physical keys. On-screen keyboards are a familiar example, but virtual keyboard interfaces can also include audio or projected forms. ISO/IEC 22121-1:2026, published June 2, 2026, sets out general requirements and recommendations for audio, on-screen, and projected keyboards; its scope does not cover physical keyboards with real or adaptable keys. What are the main advantages?
Text entry without a built-in keyboard
Phones, tablets, kiosks, and other devices can accept text without a dedicated keyboard attached. On Windows, the On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) can also serve when a physical keyboard is unavailable or unusable. It can be operated by touch, mouse, pen or another pointing device, so a touchscreen is not required. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard interaction guidance
More than one way to select keys
A person who has difficulty using a conventional keyboard may be able to use an on-screen one through an available pointing or selection method. W3C explains that keyboard functionality can also be reached through speech input that generates keyboard input, a mouse used with an on-screen keyboard, or assistive technology that produces simulated keystrokes. That flexibility depends on the application exposing its functionality to keyboard input and on operation not being time-dependent. Keyboard support does not remove the need for suitable speech, mouse, or pointer support. W3C’s explanation of WCAG Guideline 2.1

Layouts and character entry can adapt
Software can present a different layout or character-entry method without changing physical key hardware. Microsoft notes that an Input Method Editor (IME) is needed for languages with more graphemes than available keyboard keys, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Support varies by platform, language, and configuration; a virtual keyboard should not be assumed to support every language. Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise OSK documentation
Optional prediction and dictation
Some implementations offer word prediction, which suggests likely words or phrases to reduce typing, or dictation, which turns speech into text. Microsoft’s Windows IoT documentation describes prediction for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, and dictation when the input language is set to the operating-system language in the documented configuration. These are product- and configuration-specific examples, not universal features. Microsoft’s Windows IoT Enterprise OSK documentation W3C’s overview of input methods

What are the trade-offs?
Small keys can slow typing and affect comfort
A 2015 study by Aulck, Bartha, Johnson, Kim, and Thamsuwan measured 21 participants using virtual-key layouts with square keys of 13, 16, 19, and 22 mm and 2-mm spacing. In that study setup, typing with 13-mm keys was 15% slower than with the larger tested sizes. The researchers also reported slightly higher static shoulder muscle activity and greater wrist extension with the smallest keys. These findings describe the tested layouts and participants; they do not predict performance on every device or for every user. CDC Stacks study record

Accessibility depends on the app and input method
An on-screen keyboard helps only when a person’s available input method can operate it and the application makes its functions accessible through that method. W3C cautions that keyboard accessibility alone is not a substitute for support optimized for speech, mouse, or pointer input, and that time-dependent operation can remain a barrier. It is not inherently more secure for passwords
In a 2015 NIST publication, Kristen Greene, Joshua M. Franklin, and John M. Kelsey wrote that mobile password entry affects both usability and security, while usable-security research on complex password entry was limited. Their work examined a method for reducing keyboard changes and cognitive load; it does not establish that ordinary on-screen keyboards are inherently more secure. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When does a virtual keyboard make sense?
It is especially useful for brief text entry on devices without built-in keys, for replacing unavailable or unusable physical input, or when a suitable alternative input method or language layout is important. For sustained typing, compare the actual key size and visibility, whether the keyboard covers the text field, supported layouts and assistance, and how well the interface works with the input method you use. On Windows, the documented touch-keyboard behavior can scroll a text field into view if the keyboard would otherwise obscure it; this behavior depends on the product and version.
