A USB drive adapter lets a flash drive with one connector plug into a device with another. For a phone or tablet, the adapter must also be paired with USB host or OTG support; changing the connector alone does not make an incompatible device read a drive.
What is a USB drive adapter?
The term describes a connector or short cable that bridges a USB flash drive and a device with a different port. For example, a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter can connect a conventional USB-A flash drive to a USB-C port.

When the device is a phone or tablet, the adapter is often called an OTG adapter. USB On-The-Go (OTG) allows a compatible portable device to communicate directly with USB peripherals; when you connect a flash drive, the phone acts as the host. The USB-IF describes OTG and embedded-host capabilities for portable devices and non-PC hosts in its USB On-The-Go and Embedded Host overview.
Which adapter matches your device?
| Device port | Typical connection for a USB-A flash drive | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C | USB-C-to-USB-A adapter | On a phone or tablet, confirm USB host/OTG and external-storage support. Apple also lists a USB-C-to-USB adapter for USB-A devices, including flash drives, on compatible Macs. |
| Micro-USB | Micro-USB OTG adapter | The phone or tablet must support OTG and external storage. Xiaomi describes both Micro-USB and USB-C OTG adapters, including connecting a phone to a flash drive. |
| Lightning | Lightning-to-USB camera adapter | Use a connection path supported by the particular iPhone and follow Apple’s storage and power guidance. |
These are connector categories, not guarantees that every adapter, device, and drive combination will work. Check the exact phone, tablet, or computer documentation. Samsung says its Type-A-to-Type-C adapter supports OTG for connecting a flash drive to a Galaxy phone or tablet; it also advises against using a dual USB Type-C adapter with a Galaxy phone or tablet.

Adapter or OTG flash drive?
An adapter is useful when you already have a USB-A drive: it changes the connector path so the drive can plug into a compatible device. An OTG flash drive instead has a phone-compatible connector built into the drive, avoiding a separate adapter. SanDisk describes the built-in-connector drive as an alternative to using an adapter with an existing USB device. Either option still depends on the host device supporting the connection and storage access.
What to check before connecting a drive
- Connector fit: Match the adapter’s device-side connector to the port on the phone, tablet, or computer. USB-C, Micro-USB, and Lightning require different solutions.
- Host and storage support: For a phone or tablet, verify that the specific model supports USB host/OTG and external storage. Support varies, so a matching port is not enough to assume the drive will be recognized.
- File system and partition layout: Apple says an external storage device used with an iPhone must have a single data partition. Listed formats are APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, and FAT. Check the relevant device maker’s requirements for other platforms.
- Power: External hard drives can draw more power than a flash drive. Apple notes that external hard drives often need external power with an iPhone; in specified USB-C cases, a powered hub may be used.
- Speed: The adapter, host port, and drive all affect transfer rates. Apple specifies up to 5 Gbps for its USB-C adapter; that maximum does not mean every connected drive or host will reach it.
How to connect a USB drive to a phone
- Identify the phone’s port—USB-C, Micro-USB, or Lightning—and choose a matching adapter for your USB-A drive, or use a compatible OTG flash drive.
- Check the phone maker’s documentation for USB host/OTG and external-storage support, plus any connector-specific guidance.
- Connect the adapter to the phone, then attach the flash drive. If the drive is not recognized, check its format and partition layout against the phone’s requirements.
- If you are connecting a power-hungry external hard drive rather than a flash drive, check whether it needs external power and whether the device maker supports a powered hub for that connection.
Why a connected drive may not appear
- The phone is not a supported USB host: OTG support varies by model. Confirm it in the device documentation rather than relying on the connector shape.
- The adapter does not match the port or guidance: Use the correct connector-specific adapter and heed device-maker cautions, including Samsung’s warning about dual USB Type-C adapters for Galaxy devices.
- The storage format or partitioning is unsupported: Check the device’s documented file-system and partition requirements. For iPhone, Apple requires one data partition and lists supported formats.
- The drive needs more power: This is more likely with an external hard drive than a flash drive. Follow the device maker’s power recommendations.
USB drive adapter: the practical definition
A USB drive adapter is the connector bridge between a drive and a device port. For phone use, successful access also requires a compatible host/OTG implementation and storage the phone can read; the right adapter is the one matched to the port and the device maker’s requirements.
