A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter connects a phone, tablet, or computer with a USB-C port to wired headphones, a headset, speakers, or other audio gear with a 3.5 mm plug. Depending on the device, the adapter may need a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC) to turn USB digital audio into an analog signal.
What does a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter do?
It bridges a USB-C audio connection and a standard 3.5 mm audio plug. That lets you use compatible wired headphones or other analog audio equipment with a device that has a USB-C port but no 3.5 mm headphone jack.

For the Android adapter design described by the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the adapter converts USB digital audio into an analog signal for the 3.5 mm output. AOSP specifies that “Only digital-to-analog adapters are allowed” for that design; this is a requirement for the documented Android adapter, not a claim that every USB-C device or adapter works the same way.

Why might an adapter need a DAC?
A DAC, or digital-to-analog converter, turns digital audio data into the analog signal that conventional wired headphones and speakers use. In some device-and-adapter combinations, that conversion happens inside the adapter. The USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that an adapter will perform the conversion a particular host device needs.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
Samsung’s UK support guidance says the Galaxy devices covered by its article require an adapter with a built-in DAC and advises checking DAC compatibility when choosing a third-party adapter. This is guidance for the Galaxy devices addressed there, not a universal rule for all phones, tablets, and computers. See Samsung’s USB-C headphone guidance and check your own device maker’s documentation.
How to check whether an adapter will work
- Identify the exact host device. Check the manufacturer’s audio or accessory guidance for your specific phone, tablet, or computer. Do not infer compatibility from the USB-C port alone.
- Check the adapter’s conversion design. If your device requires a DAC, choose an adapter explicitly described as having a built-in DAC and as compatible with your device. AOSP’s digital-to-analog requirement applies to the Android adapter design in its specification.
- Match the audio plug and functions. Confirm that the adapter accepts a 3.5 mm plug. If you need a headset microphone as well as headphone audio, verify that the adapter supports microphone input; AOSP’s overview covers stereo analog devices with and without microphones.
- Test the connection. If the headphones do not work, check the device’s compatibility guidance and the adapter’s specifications before assuming the headphones are faulty.
What kinds of audio equipment can it connect?
With a compatible adapter, the 3.5 mm end can connect wired headphones, a headset, speakers, or other audio equipment that uses that plug. The adapter’s supported functions matter: a headset with a microphone may require support for microphone input, while listening-only headphones do not.

Apple describes its USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for connecting headphones and other audio devices to USB-C devices. Apple also documents USB-C audio use cases that include iPad. That is evidence for Apple’s stated use cases, not a guarantee for every USB-C accessory or device.

No universal compatibility or sound-quality ranking follows from the connector type. The official documentation cited here describes platform requirements and manufacturer guidance; it does not compare individual third-party adapters or establish that one model is best. For designers, Apple’s Technical Note TN3190 says USB-connected audio devices for Mac, iPad, and iPhone must conform to USB Audio Device Class specifications published by USB-IF. That standards context does not replace checking consumer-device compatibility.
