A Strong Sell rating signals a negative view under the method used by the analyst or platform that issued it. It is not a standardized promise that a stock will fall: the label alone does not tell you the assumptions, forecast period, benchmark, or likelihood of a decline. To interpret it, first identify who issued the rating and how that source defines it.
What does a Strong Sell rating mean?
It means the source has placed a stock in a strongly negative category on its own rating scale. That category might reflect an individual analyst’s opinion, a broker recommendation, or a platform’s summary of several recommendations. There is no single industry-wide definition that makes every Strong Sell label equivalent.

The rating’s practical meaning depends on details such as the source’s thresholds, how it combines inputs, and whether it expects an absolute price decline or performance worse than a benchmark. A label without those details is a signal to investigate, not a complete forecast.
Does Strong Sell mean the stock will go down?
No. A recommendation expresses an opinion or summarizes opinions; it does not guarantee an outcome. The provider-specific definitions below describe rating categories and construction rules, not comparable evidence that a Strong Sell rating predicts a decline with a particular accuracy.

Do not infer a universal percentage loss or time horizon from the label. For example, one definition may be tied to a one-year return forecast, while another may be relative to a market benchmark. Neither can be applied to a rating from a different provider unless that provider uses the same method.
Is Strong Sell an analyst’s rating or a consensus?
It can be either. An individual analyst or broker may issue a recommendation; a platform may instead aggregate recommendations into a consensus. Check the source label and its methodology rather than assuming a rating displayed beside a stock is one analyst’s direct view.

TipRanks consensus, as described by IG
IG’s Help Centre says the TipRanks consensus uses analyst ratings from the prior three months and has five categories. Under the TipRanks rules described there, Strong Sell is a score above 4.5 and requires at least three ratings in that period; one or two ratings are normalized to Moderate Sell. These are TipRanks-specific aggregation rules, not universal definitions. Read IG’s explanation of TipRanks.

TradingView says its Analyst rating represents broker recommendations aggregated through FactSet. Strong Sell is one of five possible labels in that consensus. TradingView distinguishes this Analyst rating from its Technical rating, which is based on technical indicators. See TradingView’s Analyst rating documentation.

TD Analyst Centre
TD says analyst recommendations are usually Buy, Hold, or Sell, though terminology can vary, and explains that its overall rating uses its own scoring approach. This is another reason not to assume the same label or category has an identical meaning across services. Read about TD Analyst Centre.
Do all analysts use the same rating scale?
No. Providers choose their own categories and thresholds, and their systems can measure different things. Fidelity’s glossary gives two examples that illustrate why a Strong Sell label should be read alongside the source’s definition:
Rank #4
- ValuEngine: Fidelity describes Strong Sell as a forecast one-year return below -12%. That figure is a definition in this product’s rating system, not a general prediction for stocks carrying the label.
- S&P Capital IQ STARS: Fidelity describes a one-star Strong Sell as an expectation that the shares will underperform the applicable benchmark and fall in absolute price. The applicable benchmark differs by region; Fidelity’s glossary specifies separate benchmarks for Europe and Asia.
These examples are product-specific definitions. Fidelity does not present them as a common rule for every analyst or platform. See Fidelity’s Research Glossary, S through Z.

How to interpret a Strong Sell label on a platform
- Identify who issued it. Determine whether it is one analyst’s recommendation, a broker’s rating, or an aggregator’s consensus.
- Find the scale and thresholds. Check what categories the provider uses and what qualifies as Strong Sell.
- Check the inputs and timing. For a consensus, find out how many ratings are included and the lookback period. For a forecast, find the stated horizon.
- Look for the comparison being made. Establish whether the rating predicts an absolute decline, underperformance against a benchmark, or both.
- Read the underlying analysis. The label does not expose the analyst’s assumptions or explain why the rating was assigned.
These checks make it possible to compare methodologies rather than treating identical words as interchangeable. The sources cited here define categories and aggregation methods; they do not establish a comparable accuracy rate for Strong Sell ratings across providers.
