It is the one that reliably serves the people who depend on it—and whose data and services you can recover when something goes wrong. A Raspberry Pi makes that distinction hard to ignore: power, storage, backups, maintenance and security matter more than the novelty of the hardware.
Judge a home server by whether it works—and whether you can recover it
A Raspberry Pi is an appealing way to run services at home, but the board itself is only one part of a server. The relevant questions are practical: Does it handle the workload? Does it stay powered? Can you restore important data? Can you keep its software and access controls in good shape?

That is a more useful standard than treating a particular board, rack or collection of services as proof of a better setup. A Raspberry Pi Ltd discussion thread asks, “How much infrastructure can you put on a Raspberry Pi?” and mentions concerns such as backups, low power consumption and a device becoming slow or overloaded. It is one discussion, not evidence of what homelab communities broadly prioritize. Read the thread.
Start with the workload, not the hardware’s reputation
There is no universal answer to whether a Raspberry Pi is sufficient for self-hosting. It depends on the services, how many people use them, and how much performance headroom they need. A setup that is responsive for one household’s needs may be inadequate for a different workload. The available guidance does not establish a controlled performance comparison between Pi boards and mini PCs or other home servers, so a categorical winner—or a claim that a particular class of machine is always enough—would be unjustified.

Before choosing or expanding a setup, write down which services matter, who relies on them and what failure would mean. Then check whether the hardware can handle those needs with room for ordinary peaks. If the system feels slow or overloaded, identify the service and bottleneck rather than assuming that a more elaborate build is automatically the answer.
Power is an operational requirement
Power requirements vary by Raspberry Pi model and by what is connected to it. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation says all models require a 5.1V supply, while the current required generally increases with the model. Its getting-started guidance gives model-specific supply recommendations. Check the recommendation for the board you actually use rather than assuming one supply suits every model.

The board is not the whole load. USB storage and other peripherals draw power too; higher-demand devices may need a separate power plan or an externally powered hub. Raspberry Pi warns that low-quality power supplies can corrupt storage or cause unpredictable behavior. Its hardware documentation also notes that sudden power-downs can happen in settings where Raspberry Pi devices are used for storage or monitoring.
That makes an unstable supply more than an inconvenience. If the board or attached devices lose power unexpectedly, the service can stop and data on its storage may be at risk. Match the supply and cable to the board and connected equipment, and treat a powered hub as an option when the peripheral load warrants it—not as a substitute for checking the actual requirements.

Continuous uptime is not a backup
A server that runs every day can still lose data. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation warns that sudden power loss can corrupt storage. And even if the machine stays online, a failed drive, accidental deletion or other incident can remove files that were never copied elsewhere.
US-CERT’s 2012 document Data Backup Options describes the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of important files (one primary and two backups), use two different media types, and keep one copy offsite. This is guidance from that document, not a claim that a single backup pattern prevents every kind of loss. Its value is that it makes a backup plan concrete: a second copy on the same device is not enough protection against that device failing, and copies kept only at home share some risks.

Decide which files matter and where each copy lives. Then test a restore. A backup that exists but cannot be recovered when needed does not meet the practical goal of protecting your data.

A server running at home still needs deliberate security. Raspberry Pi’s security architecture documentation states that Raspberry Pi OS does not support encrypted root filesystems by default. Disk encryption and verified boot require deliberate setup; neither should be assumed simply because the device is small or physically nearby.

For everyday protection, CISA’s consumer guidance recommends securing home Wi-Fi, enabling multifactor authentication where available, installing updates and periodically backing up data that cannot be recreated, such as photos and personal documents. Its digital home tip sheet is general household advice, not a Pi-specific hardening manual. Apply the guidance to the accounts, network and services in your own setup, and think carefully about which services need to be reachable from outside your home.

Choose what to optimize for
When deciding what to build or improve, compare the setup against the job it needs to do—not against a photo or parts list. These checks reveal whether the weak point is capacity, power, recovery, upkeep or exposure:
- Workload: Are the services responsive for their intended users, with reasonable headroom?
- Power: Does the supply suit the exact Pi model, and can it handle connected peripherals?
- Storage and recovery: Are important files backed up in more than one place, with an offsite copy where appropriate, and have you tested restoring them?
- Maintenance: Can you keep the system updated and manage it without creating an unsustainable burden?
- Security: Are Wi-Fi, accounts and externally reachable services protected intentionally rather than left at defaults?
Those priorities do not make hardware choices irrelevant. They put hardware in its proper place: as a means to run useful services, not as the measure of whether a self-hosted setup is worthwhile. A modest system that meets its users’ needs and can be maintained and recovered is a sounder choice than a more ambitious one whose owner cannot keep it reliable.
